AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSEHOLD, WE WILL SERVE THE LORD / JOSHUA 24:15

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Joshua 24:15

And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

The Daily Crossroad: Choosing Whom We Will Serve

We have all seen the beautiful wooden plaques or kitchen calendars hanging in family homes bearing the iconic phrase: “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” It is an inspiring, pithy declaration of faith. However, when Joshua spoke these words to the Israelites in Joshua 24:15, he was not offering a cozy home sentiment. He was issuing a radical, urgent ultimatum at a critical covenant renewal crossroads.

God invites every single one of us into a deep, personal relationship with Him. Yet, love cannot exist without freedom, so He never forces Himself on us. He gives us a genuine choice, and we must all decide for ourselves whom we will follow in life.

A Continuous Devotion, Not a One-Time Event

The most vital truth about serving the Lord is that it is never a single, historical decision. As we see throughout the history of Israel, high points of commitment can quickly dissolve into complacency. True covenant loyalty requires an ongoing daily renewal. It is not enough to look back at a past prayer or a childhood choice; those who follow God must continually make the intentional choice to pursue His plans, do what is right, and keep Him at the absolute center of their lives.

According to Joshua 24:14-16, a lifelong commitment to God demands four foundational postures:

  • Deep Reverence: Developing a profound, holy fear and awe of God that outweighs our fear of human opinions.
  • Firm Commitment to Truth: Serving Him in absolute sincerity, integrity, and faithfulness rather than superficial ritual.
  • Sincere Desire for His Goals: Actively choosing His plans over our personal ambitions or cultural expectations.
  • Strong Determination to Resist Sin: Wholeheartedly throwing away modern “idols”—whether comfort, validation, or wealth—that attempt to claim our primary allegiance.

The Gravity of Our Choices

Choosing not to choose God is still a choice. Scripture warns us that neutrality is an illusion. If we are not actively serving the Living God, we will inevitably default to serving the shifting cultural gods of our modern age.

As Joshua honestly warned the leaders of Israel, failing to love and serve God wholeheartedly carries generational weight. A life detached from God’s truth eventually results in spiritual judgment, emptiness, and destruction (Joshua 24:20; 23:11-13). Our daily choices create a spiritual legacy that directly shapes the atmosphere of our homes and the future of our families.

Before the chaos of today pulls you in a thousand different directions, pause at the crossroads. Look at your habits, your time, and your home, and make the conscious, bold declaration to put God first.

A Closing Prayer for Your Household

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the incredible privilege of knowing You and being invited into a personal relationship with the Creator of the universe. Thank You for giving us the freedom to love and serve You by our own choice. Today, we draw a line in the sand. We confess that we are easily distracted by the modern idols of comfort, approval, and self-reliance, and we ask for Your forgiveness.

Lord, grant us a deep reverence for Your holiness and a firm, unwavering commitment to Your truth. Give us a sincere desire to fulfill Your specific goals for our lives, and the supernatural strength to resist the deceptive appeal of sin. We do not want to live lukewarm lives that lead to spiritual drifting; we want to live fully alive in Your presence.

We dedicate our hearts, our habits, and our homes to You. Cleanse our households of anything that competes with Your lordship. May our families be a living testimony of Your love, grace, and obedience. We boldly declare over our lives today: As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.

In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
