(KJV) Exodus 13:1-2
And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.
CONSECRATE TO ME EVERY FIRSTBORN MALE / EXODUS 13:1-2
Because God had spared the firstborn son of all Israelite families and rescued all of the Hebrew people from the Egyptians, He now claimed His ownership over them.
- God commanded the nation to acknowledge this by dedicating their firstborn sons to God’s service. Later this responsibility was transferred to the Levites (one of Israel’s twelve tribes) who became the people’s representatives in performing God’s special services, such as the priesthood and leading worship. However, families were to “redeem” (“buy back”) such children by paying a price (Exodus 13:13; Numbers 3:11-13, 50-51; 18:16).
- This act reminded the Israelites that God had redeemed them from slavery in Egypt and that they belonged to Him. Joseph and Mary obeyed this law when they dedicated Jesus as their firstborn (Luke 2:22-23).
