START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Exodus 12:17
And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.
THE FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD / EXODUS 12:17
Exodus 12:15-20 describes the Feast of Unleavened Bread that Israel was to celebrate after they entered Canaan, the promised land. This feast represented how God saved and separated His people from Egypt in order to fulfill His purposes. Yeast, which causes a rising or swelling and indicates a change known as fermentation, symbolizes sin. Unleavened bread (having no yeast) symbolized repentance. True repentance means rejecting sin and turning away from it in order to turn toward God and embrace His way of life (Exodus 13:7).
- All yeast, which symbolized worldly corruption and sin, had to be removed from the Israelites’ houses. This act represented how their lives and homes were to be pure and reserved for God (Exodus 12:15-16) because of what He had done for them (Exodus 13:8-9). The New Testament makes a link between this Feast of Unleavened Bread and Christians removing “malice and wickedness” from their lives and living in “sincerity and truth” (1 Corinthians 5:6-8).
- Failure to turn from sin and demonstrate faith toward God resulted in judgment. This meant being removed from God’s covenant, forfeiting salvation (Exodus 12:15) and giving up a relationship with God.
- The Passover meal was the signal that the Feast of Unleavened Bread had started (Exodus 12:6, 18-19). For a New Testament Christian, this shows the importance of faith, obedience and gratitude toward Christ, the ultimate sacrificial Lamb.
