(KJV) Luke 2:36-38

And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; ³⁷ And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. ³⁸ And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

Anna was a prophetess who, like Simeon, had hoped and prepared for a long time for the coming of Christ. She remained a widow for many years, devoting herself completely to God and “fasting and praying” night and day. The Bible teaches that being single can be a great blessing and benefit in serving God. The missionary Paul states in one of his New Testament letters that those who are unmarried have greater opportunity to focus their concerns and efforts on God’s purposes. It is easier for them to give their undivided attention and devotion to God Himself (1 Corinthians 7:32-35).
