START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Luke 2:25-30
And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, 28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
RIGHTEOUS AND DEVOUT – WAITING FOR THE CONSOLATION / LUKE 2:25-32
RIGHTEOUS AND DEVOUT
“Righteous” or “upright” (Luke 1:6) translates the Greek word dikaios (Hebrew yasher), meaning “straight.” In the Old Testament, this word meant more than just conforming to the commandments; it meant that a person was in a right relationship with God – both in heart and in action (Psalms 32:2).
- The righteousness that God desired in people’s lives throughout the Old Testament was a spiritual condition of one’s heart and was based on true faith, love and reverence for God (Deuteronomy 4:10, 29; 5:29). This was evident in the parents of John the Baptist, who observed “all the Lord’s commandments and regulations blamelessly” (Luke 1:6; Genesis 7:1; 17:1; 1 Kings 9:4, where the term includes “integrity of heart”). The same characteristics were found in the life of Simeon.
- People who were referred to as “righteous” were not morally perfect and faultless (Job 1:1). Yet they followed God sincerely and relied on Him wholeheartedly. When they sinned (failed or offended God), they obeyed His requirements and received forgiveness by presenting an animal sacrifice to God in an attitude of true faith and repentance – turning from their own way and following God (Leviticus 4:27-35).
WAITING FOR THE CONSOLATION
In a time of terrible spiritual conditions in Israel and throughout the world, Simeon was devoted to God and guided by the Holy Spirit. He had been waiting with faith, patience and great desire for the coming of the Messiah (Savior Christ). In the last days before Christ returns for His church (all His faithful followers worldwide), most people in the world will be living in a terrible spiritual condition. Many will abandon their faith in Christ and stop looking and living for His coming (Titus 2:13). Yet there will always be those who are faithful, like Simeon. Others may place their hope in temporary, worldly things; but God’s faithful followers will be like the loyal servant described in Matthew 24:45-47, who stayed alert through the long, dark night, waiting for his master to return. Our greatest hope and desire should be to see face to face “the Lord’s Christ” (Luke 2:26; Revelation 22:4) and to live forever in His presence. That reality only comes if we are ready when He comes (Revelation 21 – 22).
