CHIEF PRIESTS AND TEACHERS OF THE LAW / MATTHEW 2:4

And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

When King Herod caught wind that a new King of the Jews had been born, he did not launch a spiritual search. He launched a political data-gathering mission. To find out exactly where this child was, he called a meeting with the ultimate religious experts of his day.

Matthew 2:4 records this critical moment:

“When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born.”

Matthew 2:4 introduces us to a powerful, highly educated group of people who held the keys to religious and civil life. However, their reaction to the birth of Jesus serves as a sobering warning for believers today.

To understand the gravity of this moment, we have to look at who Herod was consulting. These weren’t casual observers; they were the elite spiritual guardians of Israel.

• The Chief Priests: These men were the elite temple ministers directly in charge of worship, sacred sacrifices, and temple finances. They were responsible for facilitating the nation’s connection to God.
• The Teachers of the Law: Also known as scribes, these men were the premier Jewish scholars of the day. Professionally trained in the history of Old Testament law, they were absolute experts in interpreting and applying Scripture to individual lives (Matthew 22:35). Because printing presses didn’t exist, they also served as the rigorous copyists who meticulously transcribed ancient manuscripts of Scripture.
• The Sanhedrin: Together, these two groups formed the core of the Sanhedrin—the Jewish Senate and Supreme Court. This powerful governing body consisted of roughly 70 men who managed the civil, public, social, and religious concerns of the Jewish people. Under Roman rule, they wielded massive authority and influence over the population.

When Herod asked where the Messiah would be born, these scholars didn’t even have to look it up. They knew the minor prophet Micah had already pinpointed Bethlehem centuries earlier. They had the correct theological data memorized.

But here is the tragedy: They knew the directions to the Messiah, but they didn’t care to walk there.

While the pagan Magi traveled thousands of miles across dangerous terrain following a star to worship Jesus, the chief priests and scribes couldn’t bother to walk five miles from Jerusalem to Bethlehem to check it out for themselves. They possessed information without inclination. They had flawless theology, but zero intimacy.

They were so consumed with protecting their political power under Roman rule, managing temple rituals, and enforcing legalities that they completely missed the very Savior their scriptures promised.

It is easy to look down on the Sanhedrin, but we face the exact same trap. In our modern world, we have unprecedented access to Bibles, commentaries, podcasts, and theological resources. We can become experts at quoting Scripture, posting spiritual content, and analyzing theology while our hearts remain completely cold to the presence of Jesus.

God does not just want us to copy, analyze, or archive His Word; He wants us to be transformed by it. True biblical literacy should always lead directly to passionate, humble worship. If our study of God’s Word doesn’t cause us to move toward Him in adoration, we are missing the entire point of the text.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of Your holy Word and the truths recorded for us in Scripture. Forgive us for the times we have treated Your truth as mere information rather than a call to intimate relationship. Guard our hearts against the spiritual apathy that infected the religious leaders of Herod’s day.

We ask that You never let our head knowledge outpace our heart devotion. May our study of Scripture always drive us to our knees in worship. Give us the eager hearts of the Magi, willing to seek Jesus out and lay our lives at His feet. Let Your Word transform how we live, love, and serve today.
