The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

The Opening of the New Testament does not begin with an action-packed scene or a dramatic dialogue. Instead, it starts with a family tree. Matthew 1:1 reads: “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham.”

While modern readers often skip genealogies, to a first-century audience, these words were explosive. In just one verse, Matthew establishes the legal, theological, and prophetic identity of Jesus. Let’s dig into the rich meaning behind two of the most vital titles used in this opening sentence: Christ and Son of David.

The word “Christ” is not Jesus’s last name. It is His title. Coming from the Greek word Christos, it translates directly to the Hebrew word Messiah, meaning “Anointed One.” To be anointed signifies being chosen, commissioned, empowered, and set apart by God for a special service.

From the very first line of his Gospel, Matthew affirms that Jesus is the long-awaited Savior promised in the Old Testament scriptures. He was filled with and empowered by the Holy Spirit to fulfill three distinct, sacred roles:

• The Ultimate Prophet: Jesus was anointed to challenge humanity, call people to renew their relationship with God, and reveal the absolute truth of the Father (Deuteronomy 18:15).
• The Perfect Priest: Jesus serves as the ultimate mediator between God and humanity. Unlike the priests of old who offered animal sacrifices, Jesus offered His own life as the final, complete payment for our sins (Hebrews 10:10-14).
• The Eternal King: Jesus was anointed to establish the Kingdom of God on earth, ruling His people with perfect justice, righteousness, and peace (Isaiah 32:1).

Matthew immediately follows the title of Christ with another crucial identifier: “the Son of David.” This title was essential for proving that Jesus had the right to sit on the throne of Israel.

The New Testament writers meticulously document that Jesus possessed both a legal and a biological claim to David’s royal lineage:

• The Legal Right (Matthew’s Account): Matthew traces the genealogy through Joseph, Jesus’s earthly adoptive father. Because Joseph was a direct descendant of King David, Jesus was formally and legally registered as a “Son of David,” inheriting the legal rights to the royal throne.
• The Biological Right (Luke’s Account): Luke’s Gospel traces the family line through Mary’s side of the family, who also descended from King David. This emphasizes Jesus’s flesh-and-blood humanity, showing that He was physically born into the prophetic line of promise.

By presenting both the legal lineage through Joseph and the biological lineage through Mary, the Gospels build an ironclad case. Jesus is truly the Messiah, perfectly qualified to fulfill God’s ancient covenant.

Matthew 1:1 reminds us that God is a keeper of promises. The arrival of Jesus was not an afterthought; it was a masterfully orchestrated plan centuries in the making. The One who arrived as a helpless baby is our Prophet, our Priest, and our King. He has the authority to rule our lives, the priestly love to forgive our pasts, and the prophetic truth to guide our futures.

Heavenly Father,

We praise You for Your perfect faithfulness. Thank You for sending Jesus, the Christ, to be our ultimate Prophet, Priest, and King. We thank You that He speaks truth into our lives, that His sacrifice has washed away our sins, and that His righteous kingdom rules over all.

Help us to submit to His leadership today. Let us live as faithful subjects of His Kingdom, trusting in the ancient promises You have so perfectly fulfilled. May our lives honor the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of David.
