(KJV) 1 Corinthians 3:1

And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

NOT ADDRESS YOU AS SPIRITUAL / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:1

One of the Corinthian church’s major problems was its attempt to experience God’s blessings while refusing to separate itself from the world’s corrupt beliefs, behaviors and lifestyles.

  1. The pastors and leaders of the Corinthian church were allowing people who claimed to have accepted Christ to come into the congregations and become part of church ministry without giving up their ungodly practices. The Corinthians were tolerating within the church: selfish divisions (1 Corinthians 11:18), the world’s philosophy (1 Corinthians 1:18-25; 3:19), jealousy and quarreling (1 Corinthians 3:3), pride (1 Corinthians 3:21; 4:7), immoral behavior (1 Corinthians 5:1), trivial lawsuits (1 Corinthians 6:1-8), attendance at festivals honoring false gods (1 Corinthians 8; 1 Corinthians 10) and teaching that twisted the original message of Christ (1 Corinthians 14:36-37). Because the Corinthians failed to see the absolute necessity of being loyal to truth, love and godly standards (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; 13), they abused their spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12; 14) and the “Lord’s Supper,” communion (1 Corinthians 11:20-34), and they felt the liberty to change the message of Christ (1 Corinthians 1:18-31).
  2. Jesus warns churches that tolerate ungodly practices or incorrect presentation of Biblical truth (Revelation 2:20) that He will reject them and remove them from their place in God’s kingdom (Revelation 2:5; Revelation 2:16; Revelation 3:15-16). The Spirit calls such churches to true repentance (admitting and turning from their own God-defying ways, 1 Corinthians 5:2), to separation from the ungodly ways of the world (2 Corinthians 6:6-18) and to “perfecting holiness out of reverence for God” (2 Corinthians 7:1).
