THEY COULD NOT BELIEVE / JOHN 12:39-40

(KJV) John 12:39-40

Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, ⁴⁰ He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

The people could not believe it because their own views and decisions about Jesus closed their minds and hearts to His purposes. In other words, they chose not to see what God had revealed to them. As a result, their hearts became even harder and more resistant to God. The message of Christ demands a decision and will always bring change to those who hear it – even if they refuse to accept it. The message will soften the hearts of those who are receptive and harden the hearts of those who are resistant to God. The missionary Paul says that the people of Israel were cut off from their relationship with God because of their unbelief (Romans 11:20; Psalms 95:8; Hebrews 3:8). Yet the spiritual hardening was not permanent for every individual in that nation. Anyone who accepted Christ and followed Him would receive eternal life (John 12:44-50). In fact, many in Israel did believe after the events involving God’s Spirit and the bold preaching of God’s Word on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:41).
