(KJV) Habakkuk 1:1
The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.
HABAKKUK / HABAKKUK 1:1
Habakkuk prophesied to the kingdom of Judah between the time when the Babylonians defeated the Assyrians at Nineveh (612 B.C.). By that time, Babylon had become the leading world power.
- The book is unique in that it is not a prophecy addressed directly to God’s people in Israel or Judah, but rather a dialogue, or conversation, between the prophet and God. Habakkuk asked the question: “Why doesn’t God do something about the evil that has completely filled Judah?” God responded by revealing that He was sending the Babylonians to punish Judah.
- This answer only confused the prophet more. So, he asked, “Why would God allow a nation even more wicked and cruel than Judah to deliver judgment on His people? By the end of the conversation, Habakkuk learned to trust God more and live by faith in God’s plans, no matter what the circumstances might be.
