That is why God commands His people to accept His laws as the only standard for determining right and wrong. Our lives must never be guided by the ungodly practices of any culture. God’s character – as revealed in His Word – is the only true basis and standard for all moral or spiritual conduct.

LIFE OF A CREATURE IS IN THE BLOOD / LEVITICUS 17:11

(KJV) Leviticus 17:11

For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.

LIFE OF A CREATURE IS IN THE BLOOD / LEVITICUS 17:11

This passage reveals the reason for blood sacrifices and how they relate to atonement (a “covering” for sin). The animal’s blood represented its life (Leviticus 17:14). Therefore, the price of atonement for human sin was the loss of a life. Through this substitutionary atonement, God’s plan spared human beings from having to give their own lives. In this way, the blood of an innocent sacrifice (the animal) provided a “covering” for the guilty person’s sin. The principle of substitutionary atonement helps us understand the importance of Christ’s blood in providing forgiveness and spiritual salvation under the new covenant. As Jesus Christ shed His blood on the cross, He substituted His life for the sinner’s life (Romans 5:1). Because His life was perfect and sinless, His blood is priceless and provides a complete covering for all sin. Jesus offers perfect salvation (forgiveness for sin and an eternal relationship with God) for all who accept, trust and follow Him (Colossians 1:13-14; Hebrews 9:13-14; 1 John 1:7; Revelation 7:14).

And they shall no more offer their sacrifices unto devils, after whom they have gone a whoring. This shall be a statute for ever unto them throughout their generations.

THE GOAT IDOLS / LEVITICUS 17:7

“Goat idols” literally means “hairy ones.” Evidently during Moses’ time, Israel had adopted the practice of offering sacrifices to desert demons – false “gods” – in an attempt to gain their help or favor. This behavior, which showed open and unashamed spiritual rebellion and unfaithfulness to the true God, was strictly forbidden.

Jesus points out an all-important standard for testing whether religious speakers and ministers are truly serving God: Do they work for their own glory, try to advance their own position and promote their own purposes? Or do they humbly work to bring honor to God, whatever the cost to them or their own reputations? In evaluating ministers, ask whether their preaching or other ministry brings attention to themselves or to Jesus.

IF ANYONE CHOOSES TO DO GOD’S WILL / JOHN 7:17

God’s will refers to His desires and plans that are based on His character and purposes. True saving faith – the kind that surrenders control of one’s life to God and keeps the individual in a right relationship with Him – requires an earnest desire and commitment to do God’s will. To truly believe in Christ is to be devoted to obeying God, knowing that God requires a practical, active faith (John 1:12; John 5:24).

IT HATES ME / JOHN 7:6-7

The world (most people, the worldly system and society apart from God) hated Jesus because He exposed its evil and proclaimed that all people who remain separated from God are spiritually and morally corrupt, selfish and opposed to God (John 2:14-16; 3:19-20; 5:30-47). Throughout His ministry, Jesus condemned injustice, cruelty and all forms of immoral behavior. His bold and uncompromising message challenged and exposed human sinfulness. Jesus preached a message that is the opposite of ministers who claim to preach only a “positive gospel” – one that does not include a clear godly demand for true repentance and righteousness (turning from our own sinful way, following God and doing what His Word says is right).

FEAST OF TABERNACLES / JOHN 7:2-3

The “Feast of Tabernacles” was the great feast in the Jewish year celebrating the completion of the harvest and remembering God’s goodness to Israel as they wandered in the desert following their exodus (Israel’s mass departure from slavery in Egypt in 1445 B.C.). During this festival, the people lived in booths or tabernacles (or tents) for the seven days of the feast (Leviticus 23:34-43; Zechariah 14:16-19).

THE WORD OF THE LORD STANDS FOREVER / 1 PETER 1:24-25

Peter’s quotation of Isaiah 40:6-8 indicates that, like the earth itself, all human glory and achievements (such as culture, science and philosophy) are temporary and ever changing. Eventually, these things will pass away (Psalms 90:5-10; James 4:13-17). But God’s Word remains forever. The importance, value and motive behind all human efforts and the prevailing standards of society must constantly be evaluated and judged by the Bible, rather than the Bible being judged by them. The moral absolutes of God’s Word (its standards and principles, which are relevant for all people in all situations for all time) will stand long after the collapse and self-destruction of today’s relativism (the notion that all standards of truth and right are variable, depending on the person or situation). Those who try to bend God’s Word to conform to the intellectual and moral trends of their generation betray the “living and enduring word of God” (1 Peter 1:23).

CHOSEN BEFORE THE CREATION OF THE WORLD / 1 PETER 1:20

Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

CHOSEN BEFORE THE CREATION OF THE WORLD / 1 PETER 1:20

God’s plan of spiritual salvation was not just an afterthought, nor did it come to God only after the first humans chose to disobey God and needed rescue and restoration in relation to God. His plan was laid out even before creation or human history began (Revelation 13:8). The word translated “chosen” carries the meaning of God’s foreknowledge (1 Peter 1:2). God knew that in creating humans with free will – the ability to choose whether or not to love, obey and worship Him – that they would inevitably choose to go their own way and defy Him. So, he had already set in order the plan to rescue people from the final consequence of their sin – spiritual death and eternal separation from God – and to restore them to a right relationship with Him. That plan was for God Himself to make a personal sacrifice to cover the extreme penalty warranted by sin. Only He could provide a perfect means of spiritual salvation, which He did through His Son, Jesus Christ. At just the right time in human history (Romans 5:6; Galatians 4:4; Hebrews 9:26), God sent Christ into the world to finalize and fulfill His perfect plan of forgiveness, new life and an eternal relationship with God through faith in Christ.
