REBUKED THEM / LUKE 9:55-56

We must be careful that our loyalty to and enthusiasm for Christ do not cause us to be violent against those who do not know Christ and are spiritually lost. It is God’s place to judge people in the end; but for now it is our place to continue to reach out to people with the love and message of Christ.

And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. ⁵³And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.

THE PEOPLE DID NOT WELCOME HIM / LUKE 9:52-53

Samaritans were mixed race of descendants that originated from the intermarriage of Old Testament Israelites who were left behind when Israel was conquered and exiled by the Assyrians in 722 B.C. and the people of other nations who were brought into the land by the Assyrians (2 Kings 17:24). Since the return of the Jews to their homeland many years later, there had been open hostility between Jews and Samaritans. The contention was still strong during Jesus’ time (John 14:9). Since Jews considered Samaritans to be spiritually inferior, Samaritan attacks were a serious threat to Jews who traveled through this area to Jerusalem to observe religious festivals.

THE TRANSFIGURATION / LUKE 9:29

In this event referred to as “the transfiguration,” Jesus’ appearance was transformed in the presence of three disciples, giving them a glimpse of His heavenly glory – God in human flesh (2 Peter 1:16-18; Matthew 17:2). This experience served as:

An encouragement to Jesus as He would soon face death on the cross (Matthew 16:21).
An announcement to the disciples that Jesus had to suffer on the cross (Luke 9:31).
An endorsement by God that Jesus was His true Son – the only one qualified to represent both God and humanity in restoring the relationship broken by human sin (Luke 9:35). Notice that when the disciples wanted to honor the three individuals, including Christ, the other two disappeared; and God affirmed that Christ alone was worthy of their worship.

To be ashamed of Jesus means to experience embarrassment because of our identification with the life, values and goals that Jesus taught. It means to be ashamed of His Word, ashamed to claim that everything in it is from God, ashamed to live by it and defend it. People who feel this way about Christ cut themselves off from Him. He will have no choice but to reject and condemn them on judgment day (Matthew 10:33; Mark 8:34; Romans 1:16; 2 Timothy 1:8, 12, 16; Revelation 3:14; Revelation 3:15-16).

WHOEVER LOSES HIS LIFE / LUKE 9:24

This statement from Jesus is found in all four Gospels (the narrative accounts of Jesus’ life recorded by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). Two of the Gospels contain it more than once (Matthew 10:38-39; 16:24-25; Mark 8:34-35; Luke 14:26-27; 17:33; and in a slightly different form in John 12:25). No other statement from Jesus received as much attention by the gospel writers. This, however, does not necessarily refer to a physical loss of life. Sometimes the greater challenge is continuing to live faithfully for Him during difficult situations. If personal happiness and pleasure are our main goals in life, instead of living in God’s plan and by His principles, we will find only disappointment and spiritual loss. But if we are willing to put aside our own ways and make our relationship with Jesus our top priority, basing our lives on His Word, we will find true life and joy – now and for eternity.

TAKE UP HIS CROSS DAILY / LUKE 9:23

Accepting Jesus as Savior and Lord – the Forgiver of your sins and Leader of your life – requires believing the truth of His message; but it also requires the commitment to follow Him, no matter the cost (Mark 8:34). While the cross today may seem to have a noble and popular meaning, it was a brutal means of execution during Jesus’ time. For Him, it would represent shame and humiliation. But the sacrifice He made on the cross provided us with the opportunity for an eternal relationship with God. Now, we must be willing to identify with Christ and His sufferings, allowing our own reputations to become wrapped up in our devotion to Him. The choice between living for ourselves (denying Christ) or living for Christ (denying ourselves) must be made daily. That continual choice will determine our eternal destiny.

Many people had false or misguided notions about the Messiah (the anticipated Savior, Christ) and needed further teaching and evidence before Jesus would openly identify Himself to the public. He had a specific mission with specific time frames and would not be deterred or rushed by the reactions of the people. This is, in part, the same reason why Jesus sometimes told the people He healed not to tell what He had done, or why He commanded demonic spirits not to speak or reveal His identity (Luke 4:41; Matthew 8:4).

PREACH THE KINGDOM … HEAL THE SICK / LUKE 9:2

Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. ²And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

PREACH THE KINGDOM … HEAL THE SICK / LUKE 9:2

This is the first time Jesus sent out His core group of twelve disciples (followers, learners) to represent Him with their message and actions. Their spiritual power would come from Him; He passed on His authority to them for the mission. The instruction He gave to the twelve, according to the parallel passage in Matthew, was to go to “the lost sheep of Israel” (Matthew 10:6). This meant that their primary mission was to spread Christ’s message and show the power of God’s kingdom to Jews who had not yet heard the message of Jesus. After His resurrection, however, Jesus expanded the scope of the mission to include all nations; He did so through a commission, or command, that will remain in effect “to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-20).
Jesus’ command to preach God’s kingdom (His ultimate power, authority, purposes and way of life on earth and into eternity) almost always included the command to heal the sick and to drive out demons – to break the control of illness and evil over people’s bodies and lives (Matthew 9:35-38; Matthew 10:7-8; Mark 3:14; Mark 3:15; Mark 6:7-13; 16:15, 17; Luke 9:2, 6; 10:1, 9: 4:17-19). God still wants His message to be accompanied by that same display of Spirit’s power (Matthew 10:1; Mark 16:15-18; Acts 1:8; Romans 15:18-19; 1 Corinthians 2:4-5; 4:20). Such a powerful and authoritative message is able to meet and defeat Satan’s challenge in these last days before Christ’s return (1 Timothy 4:1; 2 Timothy 3:1-5).
Individual local churches should not compare themselves with other modern-day churches; they should measure themselves by this New Testament message and pattern. Are we seeing and experiencing the full power of God’s kingdom as Jesus’ first followers did? Are we bringing the kingdom of God near (making Christ’s truth and power evident) to those around us? If not, why not?

AARON AND HIS SONS / LEVITICUS 8:1-3

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, ²Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments, and the anointing oil, and a bullock for the sin offering, and two rams, and a basket of unleavened bread; ³And gather thou all the congregation together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

AARON AND HIS SONS / LEVITICUS 8:1-3

Leviticus 8 describes the ordination (official ceremony that assigns one to an office or position) of Aaron and his sons to the priesthood. In the Old Testament, a worshiper who approached God needed not only an offering (Leviticus 1 – 7), but also the service of a priest (1 Timothy 2:5), who acted as a mediator between the person and God. The book of Leviticus describes in detail the Levitical priesthood, which was made up of ministry and worship leaders who came from the family, or tribe, of Levi. This priesthood ultimately was fulfilled by Jesus Christ, the believer’s high priest (Hebrews 2:17).

A priest was appointed to represent the people and act as a mediator between them and God (Hebrews 5:1). A priest’s purpose was to lead the worship ceremonies and help men and women approach God so they could worship and receive forgiveness (Hebrews 7:24-25; 10:14).
The priest brought people “near to God” and provided opportunity for their relationship with Him by offering gifts and sacrifices for sin and by teaching God’s law (Deuteronomy 33:8-10; Hebrews 5:1; 8:3; 9:7, 13).
Under the new covenant (God’s plan to bring people into a relationship with Himself by sending His Son, Jesus, to die for our sins and provide forgiveness), a priest’s service is no longer needed. (The New Testament includes no priestly ministry among the ministry gifts listed in Ephesians 4:11.) That is because Jesus Christ is now the high priest of the new covenant (Hebrews 9:15-22), replacing the imperfect Old Testament priesthood. He is a perfect priest “forever” (1 Timothy 2:5: Hebrews 7:25; 9:23-28).
