EVEN WHAT HE HAS WILL BE TAKEN / MARK 4:25

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 4:24-25

And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given. 25 For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.

EVEN WHAT HE HAS WILL BE TAKEN / MARK 4:25

Jesus states here a key principle of His kingdom: believers must continue to rely on God in order to learn and apply His truth to their lives. If they do not do so, they risk losing what they already know and have received. The more we act on what God has shown us through time in prayer and His Word, the more He will continue to show us. But if we do not apply what He has already shown us, none of it will do any good. In fact, failing to apply the truth we know will tend to harden us spiritually and make us less responsive to God’s Word. Why should God continue to show us deeper things if we are not doing something with what He has already shown us? Though spiritual growth is often a slow process, we must develop the discipline to stick with it, realizing that we are either growing or declining spiritually (2 Peter 3:17-18). The risk of losing one’s relationship with God increase in the same measure that we continue to spiritually seek God, and it decreases in the same measure that we neglect our relationship with Him (Hebrews 3:12-15; 4:11; 6:11-12; 10:23-39; 12:15).

TAKES AWAY THE WORD / MARK 4:15-17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 4:15-17

And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. 16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; 17 And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended.

TAKES AWAY THE WORD / MARK 4:15-17

Christ speaks here about an incomplete spiritual conversion (not on God’s part but on the individual’s part) – one in which individuals realize they need Christ’s forgiveness. However, they never really accept Christ as Lord (Leader and authority) of their lives, and they never really become part of His true church. Others may at first accept Christ; however, they never allow the Holy Spirit to transform (completely change and make new) their lives. As a result, their commitment never becomes strong enough to endure life’s trials. Even if they do become part of His church, they fail to show true commitment to Christ and true separation from the ungodly beliefs, behaviors and lifestyles that are so common in the world.

These halfhearted spiritual commitments result from the following:

  1. The church fails in their responsibility by (a) failing to communicate Christ’s message thoroughly, making a commitment to Christ seem too easy or neglecting to emphasize the cost of following Christ; (b) failing to follow through with new Christians by not establishing the new Christian with planned discipleship (spiritual training and growth process), thereby neglecting to help them develop solid Christian relationships that will encourage growth and accountability; (c) failing to deal with the demonic powers that trouble, oppress and enslave people to sin (Mark 16:15-17; Matthew 10:1; Matthew 10:8; Matthew 12:22-29).
  2. Spiritual “seekers” believe in Christ only with the mind, but not with the heart (with their whole being and personality; Acts 2:37; 2 Corinthians 4:6). That is to say, they never truly devote themselves to Christ and His purposes.
  3. Seekers fail to truly repent – to turn from their sin and make a complete life change (Matthew 3:2; Acts 8:18-23).
  4. Seekers want to accept Christ as Savior but not as Lord (Matthew 13:20-21). That is, they want the benefits of forgiveness and spiritual salvation; but they do not actively give the leadership of their lives to Christ and submit fully to His authority.
  5. The faith of the seeker is based on persuasive words or charismatic personalities rather than a true response to God’s Spirit or an effective display of God’s power in the church (1 Corinthians 2:4-5).

A FARMER WENT OUT TO SOW / MARK 4:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 4:3

Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:

A FARMER WENT OUT TO SOW / MARK 4:3

At that time, farmers planted seed by hand-tossing it over the ground. Using this method meant that some seed fell on unproductive ground. Jesus uses this parable to describe how His message will be received in the world. Three truths can be learned:

  1. Life transformation and spiritual growth depend on how one responds to God’s Word (Mark 4:14; John 15:1-10) – not just at the beginning, but over the long term.
  2. There will be mixed reactions to the gospel by people in the world. (a) Some who hear will not understand (Mark 4:15). (b) Others will believe that message, receive Christ’s forgiveness with excitement and actually begin a personal relationship with God; but for one reason or another, they do not grow in that relationship. When faced with the difficulties of life, they give up their loyalty to God and finally turn away from Him (Mark 4:16-19). (c) Still others will accept Christ, commit their lives to Him and grow in their relationship with God for a period of time. They may even be productive in serving Christ’s purposes to various degrees, but at some point their attention turns from God to the concern or pleasures of life. Then they give up their relationship with God in order to follow after those things (Mark 4:20).
  3. The enemies of God’s Word are Satan (Mark 4:15), a lack of personal growth and discipline (Mark 4:17), worldly concerns, riches and pleasures (Mark 4:19).
  4. This parable speaks generally of only two categories of people: (a) those who receive and retain God’s message and (b) those who – for various reasons – do not receive or hold fast to God’s Word and continue to follow Him. It matters more how a person continues to spiritually seek after and follow Jesus in faith and devotion than how that person started their journey with Him (Luke 8:5, 12, 13, 14, 18).

PARABLES / MARK 4:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 4:2

And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine,

PARABLES / MARK 4:2

A parable is a brief story that uses word pictures to teach a moral or spiritual lesson. Parables usually make analogies or symbolic comparisons using images that are familiar to the listeners, usually drawing from the  activities of everyday life. Not every detail in a parable is meant to have symbolic meaning, since the parable is typically used to get across one main point or concept. Jesus often taught in parables, which were not always understood by everyone who heard them. Jesus’ parables were meant to reveal truths about God’s kingdom to those whose hearts were prepared to hear. At the same time, the truths taught in these parables were hidden from those whose hearts were hardened and resistant to God (Isaiah 6:9-10; Matthew 13:3).

ANY FAT OR ANY BLOOD / LEVITICUS 3:17

Fat and blood are both vital to life (Leviticus 17:11). Because of this, they represent the life of the one that was sacrificed (through the animal that was substituted). That person’s life belonged only to God (Leviticus 3:16).

FELLOWSHIP OFFERING / LEVITICUS 3:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Leviticus 3:1

And if his oblation be a sacrifice of peace offering, if he offer it of the herd; whether it be a male or female, he shall offer it without blemish before the Lord.

FELLOWSHIP OFFERING / LEVITICUS 3:1

This offering was brought to God in order to have fellowship with Him; that is, to enjoy time and personal interaction with Him. It was offered to express thankfulness (Leviticus 7:12-16; 22:29) or to make a vow (Leviticus 7:16).

  1. It involved commitment to God’s covenant (His “life agreement” based on God’s law and promises and on people’s faithfulness and obedience to God’s standards). The fellowship offering was a celebration of peace and renewed unity between God and the worshiper.
  2. This offering was a type of the personal relationship that Christ’s followers have with God and the unity they have with each other because of Christ’s death on the cross (Colossians 1:20; 1 John 1:3). This offering ceremony also anticipated the time when God’s people will sit down for fellowship with Him in His kingdom (Psalms 22:26; Luke 14:15; Revelation 19:6-10).

AUTHORITY TO DRIVE OUT DEMONS / MARK 3:15

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 3:15

And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:

AUTHORITY TO DRIVE OUT DEMONS / MARK 3:15

Driving out demons means commanding evil spirits to come out of people whose bodies they have inhabited and to release their control over these individuals’ lives. In coming to earth, Jesus’ purpose was to destroy the works of the devil (Mark 1:27; 1 John 3:8) and release those oppressed and enslaved by Satan and sin (Luke 4:18). Jesus gave His followers His power and authority to continue His battle against the forces of darkness. This truth is verified by the following observations.

1.      After Jesus appointed the twelve disciples, He gave them “authority to drive out demons” (Mark 3:14-15; Matthew 10:1). After He appointed the seventy-wo, He gave them “authority … to overcome all the power of the enemy” (Luke 10:1, 17-19; Matthew 10:1-8; Mark 6:7, 13).

2.      The disciples were not only to go out and preach (Mark 3:14; Matthew 10:7), but also to display the power and authority of God’s kingdom by doing battle against Satan, driving out demons and healing every kind of disease and sickness (Matthew 10:1-7).

3.      Mark teaches that after His resurrection, Jesus reminded His disciples again to preach His message and exercise their God-given authority over Satan and his demons.

THAT THEY MIGHT BE WITH HIM / MARK 3:14

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 3:14

And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,

THAT THEY MIGHT BE WITH HIM / MARK 3:14

1.      The primary call of a disciple (a disciplined learner and devoted follower of Christ) is to “be with” Jesus – to develop a close personal relationship with Him. Serving God’s purposes involves instruction and practice of various ministries, but these things must flow out of time spent with Jesus. Anyone who desires to serve Christ must first practice His presence (John 15:26-27; Acts 4:13).

2.      Out of a deep relationship with Christ comes the power and sensitivity to effectively serve and minister for Him. After having been with Him, Jesus sent His disciples out to preach His message.

3.      That message is to be proven with power (accompanied by signs of healings and authority over demons). Such power comes from being with Jesus and knowing Him. Our activity for God must come after our intimacy, or spiritual closeness, with God.

LOOKED … IN ANGER / MARK 3:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 3:5

And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

LOOKED … IN ANGER / MARK 3:5

Jesus’ anger was fully justified, for it reflected His hatred and disapproval of all ungodliness, wicked rebellion and injustice (Hebrews 1:9). Though Christians must resist unjustified, sinful anger (Galatians 5:20; Colossians 3:8), it is completely appropriate and Christlike to be angry about evil (Exodus 32:19; 1 Samuel 11:6; 2 Samuel 12:5; Nehemiah 5:6). A true Christian’s anger over the sins that are practiced in society (and sometimes by Christians as well) is evidence of standing in agreement with God and His holiness in the battle against evil (Exodus 32:19; 1 Samuel 11:6; Psalms 94:16; Jeremiah 6:11; Acts 17:16). This does not mean that Christ approves of His followers taking harsh actions that set a bad example for those who do not know Christ. In doing so, they actually do more harm than good to Christ’s kingdom and reputation.
