THE SPIRIT OF JESUS CHRIST / PHILIPPIANS 1:19

The Holy Spirit, who lives within believers, is called the “Spirit of Jesus Christ” (Acts 16:7; Romans 8:9; Galatians 4:6). This is because it is Christ who gives the Spirit to individual believers at the point when they accept His forgiveness and surrender their lives to Him. Christ is also the one who baptizes His follower in the Spirit (Acts 1:8). This Spirit is the same Holy Spirit who anointed (commissioned, empowered) Jesus to bring spiritual salvation to the world (Luke 1:18); and the Spirit’s ongoing purpose is to bring honor to Jesus (John 16:14).

The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:

THE DEFENSE OF THE GOSPEL / PHILIPPIANS 1:16

God gave Paul the important task of defending the content of Christ’s true and original message as now defined in the New Testament of God’s Word. In the same way, all Christians are called to defend Biblical truth and to resist those who would misrepresent the truth (Philippians 1:27; Galatians 1:9; Jude 1:3). Those ministers today who feel no need to “contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints” (Jude 1:3) are ignoring Paul’s example and instruction.

PURE AND BLAMESS / PHILIPPIANS 1:10

(KJV) Philippians 1:10

That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ.

PURE AND BLAMESS / PHILIPPIANS 1:10

“Pure” means “without and mixture of evil.” “Blameless” means “not causing offense” to God or another person. This relates to holiness (moral purity, spiritual wholeness, separation from evil and dedication to God), which must be the highest aim of all Christians in light of Christ’s soon-coming return. Only through the passion, presence and power of the Holy Spirit working in their lives can believers develop godly character (Romans 5:5; Titus 3:5-6), be fully committed to God’s Word, “discern what is best” and remain “pure and blameless until the day of Christ.”

(KJV) Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

BEING CONFIDENT OF THIS / PHILIPPIANS 1:6

Paul’s confidence in the Philippians is based not only on God’s food work in their lives and their church, but also on their passion and sacrifice for the cause of Christ (Philippians 1:5, 7; 4:15-18). Because they have already proven to be faithful in supporting and partnering in the work of ministry, Paul was certain that God would continue to work in and through them. God is always faithful to ensure that His work will be effective in the lives of those who remain loyal to and dependent on Hom. However, His faithfulness can do nothing for those who resist His grace (unearned favor, love, help and spiritual enablement) and refuse His gift of salvation (Philippians 2:13; 2 Timothy 2:13).

LOVE MAY ABOUND … IN KNOWLEDGE / PHILIPPIANS 1:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Philippians 1:9

And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;

LOVE MAY ABOUND … IN KNOWLEDGE / PHILIPPIANS 1:9

Love, if it is to be truly Christian, must be based on Biblical revelation and knowledge – the things God shows and teaches us through His Word.

  1. In the New Testament, the term “knowledge” (Greek epignosis) refers to more than knowing information and facts; it is a spiritual assurance within one’s heart. It is a deep confidence directly related to God’s character, work and purposes, and it expresses itself in active trust and obedience to God. In this sense, we truly know God’s Word only as we live the Word and it becomes part of who we are. Biblical knowledge goes beyond knowing about God to actually knowing Him personally through a deep and growing relationship. As a result of this relationship, we will become more like Christ and take on His character traits, including a greater love for Him and others (Philippians 1:10-11; Ephesians 3:16-19).
  2. To know God’s Word (Romans 7:1) or to know God’s will (His desires and plans based on His character and purposes, Acts 22:14; Romans 2:18) suggests knowing God personally (John 17:3), obeying His Word (1 John 5:3) and expressing His love (1 John 4:8). The goal of knowing the truth of God’s Word (1 Timothy 6:3; Titus 1:9; Galatians 1:9) is a deeper love for God and freedom from sin (all that offends and opposes God, Romans 6:6). “Depth of insight” means that Christians, through true love and godly knowledge, learn to distinguish between what is good and evil, true and false, right and wrong.

JOY / PHILIPPIANS 1:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Philippians 1:4

Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,

JOY / PHILIPPIANS 1:4

This is a key theme in Paul’s letter to the Philippian church. Joy is a central part of our spiritual salvation and personal relationship with Jesus Christ. True Christian joy reflects an inner peace and delight in God the Father, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. It is the blessing that flows from our relationship with them (2 Corinthians 13:14). Joy is deeper than emotional happiness, which often depends on outward circumstances. Joy is based on God’s immeasurable love for us and on the peace and hope we have because of what Christ has done for us. Our greatest joy will come when God reveals what is stored up for those who remain faithful to Him. God’s Word teaches the following things about joy.

  1. Joy is directly related to the spiritual salvation (forgiveness of sins and a personal relationship with God) provided by the personal sacrifice of Jesus Christ, “who loved us and gave Himself up for us” (Ephesians 5:2; 1 Peter 1:3-6; Psalms 5:11; 9:2: Isaiah 35:10). Joy is also directly connected to God’s Word (Jeremiah 15:16; Psalms 119:14). For this reason, true joy does not increase or decrease depending on our feelings or circumstances because it is based on the solid foundation of what Christ has already accomplished for us and on His eternal and unchanging Word (Luke 21:33; John 1:1).
  2. Joy comes from God as one aspect of the Holy Spirit’s “fruit” – the character traits He develops in Christians’ lives (Psalms 16:11; Romans 15:13; Galatians 5:22). Joy does not come automatically but is experienced only as we remain in a growing, personal relationship with Christ (John 15:1-11). Our joy increases as the Holy Spirit gives us a deep sense of God’s presence and nearness in our lives (Proverbs 16:11; John 14:15-21; John 16:14). Jesus taught that complete joy is directly connected to knowing and remaining in God’s Word, obeying His commands (John 15:7, 10-11), loving others and being set apart from the evil in the world (John 17:13-17).
  3. Joy comes from the comfort and delight of God’s nearness (Acts 2:28) and His gifts of forgiveness, spiritual salvation and an eternal relationship with Him. True joy cannot be destroyed by pain, suffering, weakness or difficult circumstances (Matthew 5:12; Acts 16:23-25; 2 Corinthians 12:9).
  4. Joy provides the highest motivation and strength for serving God and fulfilling His purposes for our lives (Nehemiah 8:10).

HIS SON ABRAM / GENESIS 11:31

(KJV) Genesis 11:31

And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.

HIS SON ABRAM / GENESIS 11:31

With Genesis 11:27 the Bible begins the history of the family through which God would reveal His plan of redemption (bringing people back into a right relationship with Him) to the human race. The head of that family was Abram (later changed to Abraham Genesis 17:5), who lived around the year 2100 B.C. In Acts 7:2-3 Stephen, a disciple who was later martyred (killed) for his faith, stated that God first appeared to Abram in the land of the Chaldeans before Abram moved to Haran (Genesis 15:7; Nehemiah 9:7). God’s call to Abram was likely the reason his father, Terah, moved to Haran. Abram, who became the father of the Jewish nation, was a descendant of Shem (Genesis 11:10).

LET US BUILD … THAT WE MAY MAKE A NAME / GENESIS 11:4

The sin of the people in Shinar was the desire to reign over the world and determine their own destiny apart from God. They organized themselves around their own power and skills, but it was a show of pride and rebellion against God. God destroyed this effort by multiplying languages among the people, making it impossible to communicate with one another (Genesis 11:7). This may explain the world’s varied racial and ethnic groups. During this time, humans increasingly rejected God and embraced idolatry, sorcery and astrology (Isaiah 47:12; Exodus 22:18; Deuteronomy 18:10). The general spiritual condition of those in Shinar is given in full description in Romans 1:21-28. As a result, God allowed them to follow their own sinful desires (Romans 1:24,26,28). God then turned to Abram to begin revealing a way of salvation for humanity (Genesis 11:31).
