(KJV) Luke 4:18-19 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

HE HAS ANOINTED ME / LUKE 4:18-19

“Anointed” refers to the symbolism of pouring or applying oil over an individual who was being appointed, commissioned, and empowered for spiritual service. The anointing oil was symbolic of the Holy Spirit. Jesus was not anointed with literal oil but with the Spirit Himself. In this passage, Jesus stated the purpose of His Spirit-anointed ministry:

  1. To preach the gospel – the “good news” of forgiveness and spiritual salvation – to the poor, the oppressed, the humble, those crushed in spirit, the brokenhearted and those who “tremble at His Word” (Isaiah 61:1-3; 66:2). Jesus came to reach out to those whom most other people overlook or reject.
  2. To bring freedom to people who are enslaved by their own sin and evil or trapped by the troubles and cruelty of the world. This refers primarily to spiritual freedom, though Christ’s salvation also includes emotional and physical relief from life’s problems and addictions.
  3. To heal those who are blind, bruised, wounded, and oppressed. This healing involves the whole person, both physical and spiritual. Christ is able to open the spiritual eyes of those blinded by the world and Satan so that they might see the truth of God’s good news. (John 9:39).
  4. To proclaim that true freedom from Satan’s power and from sin, fear and guilt is now available (John 8:36; Acts 26:18). When Jesus refers to “the year of the Lord’s favor,” He does not mean a literal calendar year, but a period of time when spiritual salvation is available to all who accept Christ’s message, receive His forgiveness, and give control of their lives to Him.

Jesus’ ministry of preaching and healing was designed to meet every human need. That ministry now continues through Christ’s Spirit-filled followers. Through the power of the Spirit, they are able to recognize and respond to the terrible needs and misery that have resulted from sin and the power of Satan. As a result, they bring hope and help to those who are enslaved to evil, brokenhearted, spiritually blind, and physically distressed.

THE DEVIL / LUKE 4:9

Satan tempted Jesus with pride in regard to the Lord’s identity and authority. It is significant that selfish pride – something God hates (Proverbs 8:13; 16:5) – was the very issue that caused Satan to defy God and lead a rebellion in heaven, leading to his own downfall (Matthew 4:10).

DOES NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE / LUKE 4:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 4:4

And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

DOES NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE / LUKE 4:4

Satan tempts Jesus’ “flesh,” or physical desires, of which hunger is perhaps the strongest – particularly after such an extended time without food. While it may have seemed reasonable to perform a miracle to eat, Jesus would not be tempted to use His power for selfish reasons. Jesus meets and resists Satan’s temptation by declaring that He will live by God’s Word above all else (Deuteronomy 8:3).

  1. Jesus is saying that everything truly important in life depends on God and His plan and purposes (Joh 4:34). To strive for success, happiness or material things apart from God’s way and material things apart from God’s way and purpose will lead to disappointment and end in failure.
  2. Jesus emphasized this truth when He taught that we must seek God’s kingdom (God’s authority, activity, purposes and power in our lives) above anything and everything else. If we do, God promises to take care of all our needs and give us all other necessary things just the way He intends (Matthew 5:6; 6:33).

AN OFFERING TO THE LORD / GENESIS 4:3-5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 4:3-5

And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.

And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

AN OFFERING TO THE LORD / GENESIS 4:3-5

The Lord accepted Abel’s offering because he presented it in true faith and dedication to God (Hebrews 11:4; 1 John 3:12; John 4:23-24). Abel gave his best, and did so in the way God had instructed. But God rejected Cain’s offering because he saw a heart that lacked faith and a selfish will that chose not to do what was right (Genesis 4:6-7; 1 John 3:12). God is pleased with our giving and gratitude only when we are committed to doing what is right according to His plans (Deuteronomy 6:5).

The Hebrew word yada’ (“to now”) that is used here is translated “lay with.” The term is commonly used in the Bible when referring to Marital and sexual intimacy. Notice that when Eve gave birth to her son, she sincerely praised the Lord for the child. She wanted to be sure to express gratitude to God for His love, forgiveness and help.

VIRGIN WILL BE WITH CHILD … IMMANUEL / ISAIAH 7:14

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 7:14

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

VIRGIN WILL BE WITH CHILD … IMMANUEL / ISAIAH 7:14

“Virgin” (Hebrew almah) can mean either one who has had no sexual relations or “a young woman before marriage.” Usually both meanings applied when this word was used. This sign had both immediate and future applications.

  1. The immediate application referred to a new bride, who would have been a virgin until the time of her marriage. Before her son was old enough to know right from wrong, the kings of Aram and Israel would be destroyed (Isaiah 7:16).
  2. This prophecy’s final and highest fulfillment came through the virgin birth of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:23). Mary was a virgin and remined a virgin until after she gave birth to Jesus (Matthew 1:18, 25). Jesus was conceived through a miracle of the Holy Spirit rather than through the sexual involvement of a man (Matthew 1:16, 23; Luke 1:35)
  3. The virgin’s son was to be called “Immanuel,” which means “God with us” (Matthew 1:23). That name was understood with new and deeper meaning when Jesus Christ, God’s one and only Son, came into the world (John 3:16).

I WILL NOT ASK / ISAIAH 7:12

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 7:12

But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the Lord.

I WILL NOT ASK / ISAIAH 7:12

Pretending he was too humble; Ahaz rejected the prophet Isaiah’s counsel to trust God to rescue Judah. Instead, Ahaz depended on his own limited understanding and looked to the power of Assyria for help (2 Kings 16:5-18; 2 Chronicles 28:16-21). This decision would bring trouble to them when Assyria later would invade and conquer Judah’s former sister nation of Israel. Conflict between the Jews (of the family line or nation of Judah) and Samaritans (Isaiah 7:8), would continue into New Testament times. Throughout the Old Testament the sin that perhaps brought the most severe consequences to God’s people was the failure to take God at His Word and depend on Him for help.

WHEN AHAZ … WAS KING / ISAIAH 7:1-25

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 7:1-25

WHEN AHAZ … WAS KING / ISAIAH 7:1-25

About 735/734 B.C., the kings of Israel and Aram prepared to attack Judah, but Isaiah told King Ahaz of Judah to trust God to save them. Ahaz, however, refused to accept God’s offer of a miraculous sign, and instead looked to Assyria for help (2 Kings 16:5-18; 2 Chronicles 28:16-21). Isaiah challenged the king’s lack of faith and proceeded to prophesy of a God-given sign anyway – a sign to the whole house of David (nation of Judah). This future sign would be the birth of Immanuel (Isaiah 7:13-17), which means “God with us” (Matthew 1:23), referring to Jesus Christ. Though the Aramean and Israelite invasion would fail, just as God promised (Isaiah 7:7), Judah’s lack of faith and failure to depend on God would finally lead to their destruction. God later would send the Assyrians – the nation they had trusted instead of God – and the Babylonians to devastate the lands of Israel and Judah (2 Kings 17; 25).
