CHRIST DID NOT SEND ME TO BAPTIZE / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 1:17

For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

CHRIST DID NOT SEND ME TO BAPTIZE / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:17

Paul is not saying that Jesus’ teaching about baptism was unimportant (Matthew 28:19). Instead, he is pointing out that he, like Christ (John 4:1-2) and Peter (Acts 10:47-48), had instructed his associates to perform the baptisms of believers. Paul did not want to provide an opportunity for those he had led to Christ to think in any way that they were “baptized into the name of Paul” (1 Corinthians 1:13; Acts 22:16; Romans 6:4).

I FOLLOW PAUL … APOLLOS … CEPHAS … I FOLLOW CHRIST / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:12

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 1:12

Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.

I FOLLOW PAUL … APOLLOS … CEPHAS … I FOLLOW CHRIST / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:12

I FOLLOW PAUL … APOLLOS … CEPHAS

Division over leaders in the church was beginning to develop. Some church members were becoming more attached to certain ministers than to Christ’s message itself. Paul condemns this attitude, reminding them that neither he nor any of the other leaders had given their lives for the church; only Christ had given Himself, and He was the rightful head. Churches and individual Christians today have the same misguided pull toward a certain pastor, evangelist, teacher or some other ministry personality rather than to Christ and His Word. This attitude can cause them to betray Christian principles, and it continues to cause a division in the church. We must always be careful to center our love and loyalty on God and His Word, no on any of His messengers.

I FOLLOW CHRIST

The ones who proudly claimed loyalty to Jesus probably consisted of those who felt they possessed superior wisdom, revelation and spirituality that came directly form Christ. This group probably believed that God’s grace and their knowledge (1 Corinthians 8:1) brought freedom from the restraints of God’s law (1 Corinthians 6:12; 10:23) and from the demands of any moral code or set of standards (1 Corinthians 5:2). Those who taught this twisted message were attempting to win the church over to their way of thinking (2 Corinthians 11:4, 20-21). People who held or followed such misguided views probably had a prideful and independent spirit that made it difficult for them to submit to leaders with true authority, such as Paul (1 Corinthians 4:18-19).

YOU DO NOT LACK ANY SPIRITUAL GIFT – WAIT FOR OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST TO BE REVEALED / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:7

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 1:7

So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:

YOU DO NOT LACK ANY SPIRITUAL GIFT – WAIT FOR OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST TO BE REVEALED / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:7

YOU DO NOT LACK ANY SPIRITUAL GIFT

Paul expresses gratitude and praise to the Corinthian church because God, in His grace (undeserved favor, love, enablement, 1 Corinthians 1:4), has given them specific spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12-14). These gifts are special abilities given through the Holy Spirit that allow individuals to serve the needs of the church in a way that honors God and benefits those within the congregation. God is always faithful to place within the devoted church congregation exactly what it needs to fulfill His purposes for the church at any given time. Notice that in all of Paul’s instruction about spiritual gifts addressed in this letter, nowhere does he try to eliminate or discourage the use of these gifts. Instead, he attempts to change the Corinthians’ attitudes toward spiritual gifts so they may use them as God desires.

WAIT FOR OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST TO BE REVEALED

The early Christians lived with great expectation of Christ’s immediate return (Matthew 24:42; John 14:3). They lived in constant anticipation of this great hope. Notice that the Christian’s hope is for the personal return of the Lord Jesus Christ, not for the general events that will occur during the last days (1 Thessalonians 1:9-10; 4:13-17; Titus 2:13; Hebrews 9:28).

YOUR BROTHER’S BLOOD CRIES OUT TO ME / GENESIS 4:10

God’s concern for Abel shows how God cares for all who suffer because of their commitment to God and their willingness to do His will. God sees and understands their pain, and He will eventually bring justice and destroy all evil (Hebrews 12:24).

f thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

IT DESIRES TO HAVE YOU / GENESIS 4:7

God describes sin as a tempting force or power that, like a wild beast or demon, is ready to attack and devour. But God graciously gives those who trust Him the ability to resist and overcome sin by submitting to His plans and power and by relying on His Word. It is our choice whether we will yield to sin or overcome it (Romans 6).

AN EVIL SPIRIT / LUKE 4:33-35

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 4:33-35

And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,

34 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.

35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.

AN EVIL SPIRIT / LUKE 4:33-35

Luke records that one of Jesus’ first acts after announcing His role as the true Messiah (the one fulfills the prophecies about the coming Savior) was a direct confrontation with demonic powers.

  1. Jesus’ primary concerns in ministry was to destroy the devil’s works (1 John 3:8). Believers will not realize or experience the full benefits of God’s kingdom without confronting and gaining the victory over Satan’s kingdom (Matthew 12:28).
  2. One unmistakable sign that God’s people are failing to experience and show evidence of the presence of God’s kingdom is the failure to confront directly the power of evil by setting people free from the slavery to sin and demonic powers. These powers certainly recognize Christ and His authority and must submit to His followers who truly possess Christ’s power because of their deep and uncompromising relationship with Him.

HIS MESSAGE HAD AUTHORITY / LUKE 4:32

(KJV) Luke 4:32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.

HIS MESSAGE HAD AUTHORITY / LUKE 4:32

The basic meaning of “authority” (Greek exousia) is “the freedom and right to decide or act.” It involves capability and power (Luke 4:36). Jesus had a God-given authority from His Father (John 17:2), which came from knowing the Father and recognizing what the Father was doing in the world. Jesus also gave authority to His followers (Mark 3:15; Luke 9:1). But He did not want them to become lifted up with pride because of their authority, so He warned them not to be like the rulers and officials of the world who “exercise authority” (Matthew 20:25-28) in a way that misuses their power to control others. Jesus used His authority to serve, help, instruct and free people from demonic control (Luke 4:36). This is the example for all believers to follow.

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zephaniah 3:9-20 For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent.

10 From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, even the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring mine offering.

11 In that day shalt thou not be ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be haughty because of my holy mountain.

12 I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of the Lord.

13 The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.

14 Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.

15 The Lord hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the Lord, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more.

16 In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not: and to Zion, Let not thine hands be slack.

17 The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

18 I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden.

19 Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflict thee: and I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame.

20 At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord.

ALL OF THEM MAY CALL ON THE NAME / ZEPHANIAH 3:9-20

Zephaniah now turns his attention to God’s plan of salvation for the nations. This involves God’s ongoing purpose to have a personal relationship with all who yield their lives to Him. It also included His end-time purpose to rescue all who remain faithful to Him. He will restore their honor after they have been purified by His judgment. The nations will someday be reconciled to God, and He will renew His relationship with all people on earth. These promises will be fulfilled during the millennium, when Christ rules in peace over the entire world (Revelation 20:4)
