Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; ² I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:

One of the major concerns Christ expresses in His final message to the seven churches was that they keep from falling away from true faith in Him and full devotion to His Word. Churches ran this risk by tolerating false teachers, prophets or apostles (claiming to be authorized by Christ to deliver His original message) who were misrepresenting His Word or compromising its power and authority. 

1. Christ instructs the churches to test and evaluate all who claim to have spiritual authority (Galatians 5:7; 1 John 4:1).
2. Notice that Christ rebukes the churches in Pergamum (Revelation 2:14-16) and Thyatira (Revelation 2:20) for accepting rather than rejecting those who are disloyal to the truth and the standards of God’s Word.
