THE PARABLE OF THE GREAT BANQUET / LUKE 14:15-24

Although this parable originally applied to Israel and its widespread rejection of Christ and His message, it also applies to churches and individual believers today.

The subject of this parable is Christ’s future heavenly kingdom and those who will actually be a part of it following His return (Luke 14:14-15; 22:18).
Those who were initially invited represent the Jews and their leaders who claimed to be waiting for the fulfillment of God’s kingdom on earth. But when Christ came, they refused His invitation to be part of that kingdom because He did not fit their expectations. Today, Christ’s invitation to eternal life goes out to all people. Many of those who appear to have received and accepted the invitation will ultimately pass up their opportunity to be with Christ. This is because other interests and concerns will take priority, and their love for Jesus and the heavenly kingdom will grow cold (Luke 14:17-20). None of the excuses given was genuine. For example, a person would not buy land or purchase oxen without first inspecting these things.
Such people do not set goals or follow through with them based on godly, eternal standards (Luke 14:18-20). They reject the Bible’s challenge to set their “minds on things above, not on earthly things,” while waiting for Christ to return (Colossians 3:1-4). Their life’s hopes and aspirations are centered on worldly, temporary things; and they no longer passionately desire “a better country – a heavenly one” (Hebrews 11:16).
Luke 14:21-23 teaches us that there will also be those whose hearts are fully devoted to Christ and focused on eternal issues. They respond to Christ’s invitation without reservation and have nothing in life they value more than the opportunity to be with Jesus. Such people are able to pray with the Spirit and the bride (the rest of God’s faithful people in the church); “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:17).
Followers of Jesus can be part of the invitation process, helping to deliver His message to people in “the streets and alleys” (Luke 14:23). It is often in these seemingly unlikely places where people are more ready to respond to Christ’s message. Yet Christ’s heavenly kingdom will be full of “unlikely” people.
