What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

THE LOST SHEEP / LUKE 15:4

The key verse in Luke’s Gospel states that “the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost” (Luke 19:10). The three parables (brief symbolic stories that teach a lesson or make a point) in Luke 15 are presented to teach us the purpose of Jesus’ earthly mission: God’s desire to save people spiritually so they can have an eternal relationship with Him. Jesus teaches that

  1. Pursuing those who are spiritually lost – who do not yet know Him personally – so that they can experience His forgiveness and a restored relationship with Him is a top priority of God (Luke 15:4, 8, 20, 24).
  2. God and all of heaven rejoice when even one sinner turns from his or her own way and accepts Christ’s forgiveness and new life (Luke 15:7, 10).
  3. No amount of sacrifice or suffering is too great in helping to bring spiritually lost people to Jesus (Luke 15:4, 8). The fact that these are top priorities of all those who already know and follow Christ.
