(KJV) Exodus 24:8

And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words.

THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT / EXODUS 24:8

God sealed His covenant – His “life agreement” – with Israel through the sprinkling of blood. This was a sign that sacrifices would be necessary to maintain their relationship with God.

  1. The blood symbolized cleansing and forgiveness made possible by a life sacrificed to God – a life that paid the severe penalty for sin and rebellion against God. When these sacrifices were made in obedience to God, they opened the way for people to have a relationship with Him based on faith (Romans 1:5; Hebrews 9:19-20).
  2. “The blood of the covenant” symbolized the ultimate sacrifice for our sins, which was the death of Christ Jesus. When He shed His own blood on the cross, He essentially fulfilled all the requirements of the old covenant and established the new covenant (Mark 14:24; Hebrews 9:11-18). His sacrificial death spiritually purifies those who trust Him. He has become their help to avoid sin and to follow Him (1 John 1:7-2:22).
  3. Obedience must always go along with sacrifice (Exodus 24:7-8). This is God’s requirement. Anything less fails to show complete devotion to Him. Only after the people pledged to obey was the covenant sealed (confirmed, ratified) by the sacrificial blood. Only then could they participate in the benefits of their covenant relationship with God. In the New Testament, Peter (a disciple and pioneer leader in the first church in Jerusalem) refers to this when he says that we are chosen “for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood” (1 Peter 1:2).
