CROWN OF LIFE / REVELATION 2:10

(KJV) Revelation 2:10

Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

CROWN OF LIFE / REVELATION 2:10

The word translated “crown” (Greek stephanon) does not refer to a crown worn by royalty (Revelation 12:3; 13:1; 19:12). This word refers to a wreath or victor’s crown originally made of palm leaves and placed on the heads of winning athletes (Revelation 3:11; 4:4, 10; Revelation 6:2; Revelation 9:7; 12:1; 14:14). But the same word is also used of the crown of thorns brutally placed on Jesus’ head (Mark 15:7) and of the crowns of gold on the 24 elders in Revelation 4:4. Faithful followers of Christ are promised eternal life with Christ as their ultimate crown of reward.

(KJV) Revelation 2:9

I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.

POVERTY / REVELATION 2:9

Poverty (Greek ptocheia) literally means “having nothing, at all.” Smyrna was a proud Asian City closely aligned with Rome and eager to submit to the empire’s demands for emperor worship. Smyrna also had a large community of Jews that rejected Christ, though they claimed to follow God. In truth, they were under Satan’s control and helped to create a hostile environment for the Christians. Polycarp, one of the most famous early Christian martyrs (killed for his faith), was the bishop of Smyrna. The persecution and poverty of the believers at Smyrna were extensive. They were economically at the lowest point, yet Jesus says they were spiritually rich. Note the contrast to the Laodicean church, which had great material wealth, yet was considered spiritually “wretched, pitiful, poor” (Revelation 3:17; Matthew 6:20; 2 Corinthians 6:10; James 2:5). To keep our Christian faith and lives in proper perspective, we should ask ourselves: Is serving Jesus a matter of convenience for me, or is it truly costing me something? am I serving God more for what I can get from Him, or for how I can surrender myself for His kingdom and purposes?

TO HIM WHO OVERCOMES / REVELATION 2:7

(KJV) Revelation 2:7

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

TO HIM WHO OVERCOMES / REVELATION 2:7

An overcomer (Greek nikon) is one who has responded to God’s grace (His undeserved favor, love and spiritual enablement) through faith in Christ, has accepted God’s forgiveness and has entered a personal relationship with Him. But more than that, an overcomer continues to rely on God’s grace and to show true faith by remaining passionately devoted to Christ. The overcomer lives in consistent victory over sin, Satan and the corrupt world system.

  1. Even when surrounded by strong opposition and rebellion against God and His people, overcomers refuse to conform to worldly patterns of belief and behavior. They also firmly resist any ungodly tendencies among people within the church (Revelation 2:24). By hearing and responding with obedience to what the Spirit says to the churches, overcomers remain faithful to Christ to the very end (Revelation 2:26). Overcomers accept only God’s standard of living as revealed in His Word (Revelation 3:8). 
  2. Christ promises several things to the overcomers – and only the overcomers – in His churches. They will eat of the tree of life in God’s paradise; they will not be hurt by the second death (Revelation 2:11; a spiritual death, which is permanent separation from God). Overcomers will be given a new name in heaven and receive hidden manna (Revelation 2:17; heavenly “food”; Psalms 78:24); they will be given authority over the nations (Revelation 2:26); and they will not have their names removed from the book of life but will be honored by Christ in the presence of His Father and the angels (Revelation 3:5). They will remain with God in His temple and be identified with the name of God, Christ and the new Jerusalem (Revelation 3:12). Overcomers will reign with Christ (Revelation 3:21) and will forever be God’s children (Revelation 21:7).
  3. The secret of victory for overcomers is Christ’s sacrificial death for their sins (Romans 6:2-11), their own faithful testimony about Jesus and their persistent love for Christ, even to death (Revelation 12:11; 1 John 5:4). Note that we either overcome sin, the world and Satan, or we are overcome by them and are ultimately thrown into the lake of fire (Revelation 2:11; Revelation 3:5; Revelation 20:15; Revelation 21:8). There is no middle ground or in-between group.

YOU HATE THE PRACTICES OF THE NICOLAITANS, WHICH I ASLO HATE / REVELATION 2:6

But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitanes, which I also hate.

YOU HATE THE PRACTICES OF THE NICOLAITANS, WHICH I ASLO HATE / REVELATION 2:6

The Nicolaitans (Revelation 2:15) had given in to compromise with the pagan (ungodly) society around them. They taught that spiritual freedom and liberty allowed people to engage in immoral behavior without fear of punishment. They felt that because of God’s grace (His unearned favor, love and mercy), these behaviors did not affect one’s spiritual salvation or relationship with Christ. The New Testament clearly contradicts this belief, telling us plainly that such persons will not inherit God’s kingdom (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). God hates false and deceptive teaching that claims we can be saved and at the same time live immoral lives. To hate what God hated is a primary characteristic of those who are loyal to Christ (Psalms 139:21; Proverbs 8:13; John 3:19).

Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

REMOVE YOUR LAMPSTAND / REVELATION 2:5

Christ will remove any congregation or church from its place and destiny in God’s kingdom if it has lost its true passion and purpose for God and does not repent and renew its love for and obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ (1 John 5:3; 2 John 1:6).

FORSAKEN YOUR FIRST LOVE / REVELATION 2:4

(KJV) Revelation 2:4

Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

FORSAKEN YOUR FIRST LOVE / REVELATION 2:4

This refers to the deep love and passion for Christ and His Word that the Ephesian Christians had in the past. This probably describes their response after they first accepted Christ’s message and devoted their lives to Him (John 14:15, 21; John 15:9-10). 

  1. The Ephasian church had been faithful and diligent in its ministry. Yet, Jesus’ challenge to this church shows that Christians can have the right beliefs and do the right things, even enduring hardship for the cause of Christ, but still be lacking in their personal relationship with Him. The Ephesians were giving God their service, but not themselves. 
  2. This warning teaches us that working hard for the church, knowing and defending the truth, obeying many of God’s commands, worshiping in the church and even enduring hardship for faith in Christ are not the primary issues when it comes to relationship with God. Above all, Jesus wants those in His churches to have a deep and sincere love for Him personally (2 Corinthians 11:3; Deuteronomy 10:12). 
  3. Sincere love for Jesus should be evident in our personal priorities. Are we spending consistent personal time with Him in prayer and His Word – not out of duty, but because we want to know Him more? Do we go throughout each day with a strong awareness of His presence at all times? Is there evidence of moral putty in all areas of life, which means avoiding anything that could offend the Holy Spirit or compromise our devotion to Christ (2 Corinthians 11:3; 2 Chronicles 30:6; Matthew 22:37, 39; John 21:15)? 
  4. Revelation calls this lack of passionate devotion toward Christ as having “fallen” spiritually (Revelation 2:5) and serious enough to require repentance. This means changing our attitude toward God, turning from our own way, accepting God’s forgiveness, surrendering to Christ’s leadership and pursuing God’s purposes (Matthew 3:2). 
  5. To help guard against the error of the Ephesian church, we must constantly ask ourselves: Are we staying both doctrinally pure (in our basis of belief and teaching) and spiritually passionate? Are we simply trying to do things for Christ, but not taking time to be with him?

WHO CLAIM TO BE APOSTLES / REVELATION 2:1-2

One of the major concerns Christ expresses in His final message to the seven churches was that they keep from falling away from true faith in Him and full devotion to His Word. Churches ran this risk by tolerating false teachers, prophets or apostles (claiming to be authorized by Christ to deliver His original message) who were misrepresenting His Word or compromising its power and authority. 

  1. Christ instructs the churches to test and evaluate all who claim to have spiritual authority (Galatians 5:7; 1 John 4:1).
  2. Notice that Christ rebukes the churches in Pergamum (Revelation 2:14-16) and Thyatira (Revelation 2:20) for accepting rather than rejecting those who are disloyal to the truth and the standards of God’s Word.

SEVEN STARS / REVELATION 1:16

And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

SEVEN STARS / REVELATION 1:16

The seven stars represent either angel who are assigned, each to a church, to assist it in its spiritual warfare (Revelation 1:20; Matthew 18:10). The “double-edged sword” (Revelation 2:12, 16; Revelation 6:8; Revelation 19:15, 21) represents God’s Word, which either cuts away sin from the churches and brings God’s grace and forgiveness, or in judgment cuts a church off from God’s kingdom (Revelation 3:14-22; Hebrews 4:12).

And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

A SON OF MAN / REVELATION 1:13

This term refers to the exalted Christ – the Son of God who became a human. “Son of man” is also the term used by the Old Testament prophet, Daniel (Daniel 7:13; 10:16). In this vision, Jesus Christ is described as king, priest and judge of His churches (Revelation 1:13-16). The full-length robe (Exodus 28:4; 29:5) and gold sash depict Him as high priest – the ultimate One representing man to God and God to man (Hebrews 8:1). In the Old Testament, the roles of king and priest were to remain separate and distinct, but these roles are combined and perfectly fulfilled in Jesus Christ. The detailed description of Jesus’ white hair and blazing eyes indicates wisdom, dignity (Proverbs 6:31) and penetrating insight.
