THEIR GOD IS THEIR STOMACH … THEIR MIND IS ON EARTHLY THINGS / PHILIPPIANS 3:19

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Philippians 3:19

Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)

THEIR GOD IS THEIR STOMACH … THEIR MIND IS ON EARTHLY THINGS / PHILIPPIANS 3:19

This describes self-centered people who allow their appetites and desires (not just physical ones) to come before anything else. Their minds are on worldly things. Such people resist and rebel against the law and are unrestrained morally. They are the opposite of legalists. While legalists represented one false extreme by saying that people had to keep certain rules in order to gain spiritual salvation (Philippians 3:2-3), libertines (those who are morally unrestrained) were at the other extreme in saying that Christians were free to do as they pleased as long as they relied on God’s grace. Both errors are spiritually fatal.

ENEMIES OF THE CROSS OF CHRIST / PHILIPPIANS 3:18

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Philippians 3:18

(For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:

ENEMIES OF THE CROSS OF CHRIST / PHILIPPIANS 3:18

These enemies can best be understood as people claiming to follow Christ but at the same time corrupting His message and insulting His reputation by immoral lifestyles and false teachings. One key to Paul’s spiritual effectiveness was that he was a man of strong passion for the truth and purity of Christ’s message, and he was a man of high integrity as it related to his ministry with that message. His heart was stirred very deeply when the message was distorted or when those whom he served were in danger of abandoning their faith in Christ (Philippians 3:2; Galatians 1:9).

MATURE … LIVE UP TO WHAT WE HAVE ALREADY / PHILIPPIANS 3:15-16

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Philippians 3:15-16

Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in anything ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. 16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.

MATURE … LIVE UP TO WHAT WE HAVE ALREADY / PHILIPPIANS 3:15-16

Christians who have made progress in terms of spiritual growth and stability must not become unconcerned or allow a lack of dedication to be part of their lives. Mature followers of Christ are those who continue to grow in their relationship with God – through good times and bad – continually living up to what they have “already attained” and beyond. Becoming more mature and making this kind of progress in your Christian life requires the following:

  1. You must put into practice the Biblical knowledge you already have and the truth you already understand. You are responsible to apply to your life what God has already shown you. Christians often ask God to give them “more” spiritually; but why should God give us more when often we are not living up to and applying the Biblical principles we already know? (1 Corinthians 2:6; 3:1-3; Hebrews 5:12-6:1).
  2. You must press on to higher levels and a deeper relationship in your spiritual life as you walk with God. This means breaking the up-and-down cycle of spiritual victory followed by defeat that will restrain or completely stop your Christian maturity. Circumstances will change and your feelings will go up and down, but you can still make constant and steady spiritual progress by growing closer to God and applying His Word through it all.

BUT ONE THING I DO / PHILIPPIANS 3:13-14

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Philippians 3:13-14

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

BUT ONE THING I DO / PHILIPPIANS 3:13-14

Paul pictures himself as an athlete in a race (Hebrews 12:1; 1 Corinthians 9:24-27; 1 Timothy 6:12; 2 Timothy 4:7-8), putting forth all his strength and pressing on with determination and concentration in order to finish the course and win the prize. His aim is to reach and fulfill the goal that Christ has set for his life. His “finish line” is perfect union with Christ (Philippians 3:8-11), his final salvation and his resurrection from the dead (Philippians 3:11).

  1. This was the motive of Paul’s life. He had already received a glimpse of heaven’s glory (2 Corinthians 12:4) and had made up his mind to center his entire life on Christ’s purpose until God called him home to heaven, where he would see Christ face to face (2 Timothy 4:8; Revelation 2:10; Revelation 22:4).
  2. Such determination is necessary for all of us. Throughout our lives, all kinds of distractions and temptations, such as life’s worries, riches and evil desires, threaten to choke off our commitment to Christ (Mark 4:19; Luke 8:14). But we must not take our eyes off the prize of being with Jesus forever. That means “forgetting what is behind,” including the corrupt world and our old life of sin (Genesis 19:17; Genesis 19:26; Luke 17:32) and “straining toward what is ahead” – our final salvation in Christ. Forgetting what is behind requires letting go of both good and bad experiences. We must not dwell on past fears, difficulties and failures, allowing Satan to frustrate or overwhelm us with guilt; Christ has freed us from all of that (Romans 6:18; Hebrews 10:22; Revelation 1:4-5). Yet, we must also refuse to rest on past accomplishments and successes that could allow us to become spiritually prideful or lazy in the present or future. What matters most is what is ahead in regard to Christ’s purposes for us and our final and priceless reward with Him in heaven.

RIGHTEOUSNESS THAT COMES FROM GOD / PHILIPPIANS 3:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Philippians 3:9

And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

RIGHTEOUSNESS THAT COMES FROM GOD / PHILIPPIANS 3:9

The righteousness of Christ’s followers (their right relationship with God and the power of His Spirit to live right by His standard) consists first of all in being forgiven, justified (Made right with God) and accepted by God through faith (Romans 4:5).

  1. However, our righteousness is more than this. God’s Word states that our righteousness is Christ Jesus Himself, living within our hearts (Philippians 1:20-21; Romans 8:10; 1 Corinthians 1:30; Galatians 2:20; Ephesians 3:17; Colossians 3:14). This means that Jesus’ righteous character is being expressed through us. In the Old Testament, the Messiah (Savior, Christ) is referred to as the “righteous Branch” and “The Lord Our Righteousness” (Jeremiah 23:5-6). This means that the righteousness we have is not of ourselves but is from Jesus, in whom we put our faith (1 Corinthians 1:30; Galatians 2:20). Because of Christ’s personal sacrifice for our sins and His presence within us by the Holy Spirit, we become in Him “the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
  2. The basis for our spiritual salvation and our only hope of remaining in a right relationship with Him is the sacrificial death and shed blood of Christ (Romans 3:24; 4:25; 5:9; 8:3-4; 1 Corinthians 15:3; Galatians 1:4; 2:20; Ephesians 1:7; Hebrews 9:14; 1 Peter 1:18-19; 1 John 4:10) and His resurrection life from the Holy Spirit within our hearts (Romans 4:25; 5:9-10; 8:10-11; Galatians 2:20; Colossians 3:1-3; Romans 4:22).

THAT I MAY GAIN CHRIST / PHILIPPIANS 3:8-11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Philippians 3:8-11

Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

THAT I MAY GAIN CHRIST / PHILIPPIANS 3:8-11

These verses reveal the apostle’s heart and the essence of Christianity. Paul’s greatest longing was to know Christ and to experience his personal presence and companionship in a more intimate way. Nothing else in Paul’s life even compared to this passionately earnest desire. In fact, everything else was like worthless “rubbish” (Philippians 3:8) compared to knowing Christ better. In his pursuit of a deeper relationship with Christ, Paul’s highest aims were:

  1. To know Christ intimately as a person, as well as to understand His ways, experience His companionship, comprehend His nature and develop His character as revealed in God’s Word. True knowledge of Christ involves listening to and studying His Word but also applying and experiencing the Word (Philippians 1:9), It requires following the Holy Spirit’s guidance in faith and obedience. It means identifying with Christ’s character, concerns and purposes.
  2. To be found in Christ (Philippians 3:9), which means being united with Christ in such a way as to experience all the blessings and benefits of His character, power and promises (Philippians 1:10-11; 1 Corinthians 1:30). Paul wants his identity to be so completely wrapped up in his relationship with Christ that when others think of Paul, their attention is immediately drawn to Jesus.
  3. To know the power of His resurrection (Philippians 3:10), referring to the miraculous power that raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 8:11). Paul wanted to experience that same spiritually renewing, life-transforming, miracle-working, sin-crushing power in his own life and ministry (Romans 6:4; Ephesians 2:5-6). In the deepest sense, Paul knew that he would experience his own resurrection from the dead (Philippians 3:11; Ephesians 1:18-20).
  4. To share in Christ’s sufferings through self-denial (Mark 8:34), dying to the old self (Galatians 2:20) and suffering for the sake of Christ and His cause (Philippians 1:29; Acts 9:16; Romans 6:5-6; 1 Corinthians 15:31; 2 Corinthians 4:10; Galatians 2:20; Colossians 1:24; 1 Peter 4:13; Romans 8:17; 2 Corinthians 1:5; 4:8-18).

(KJV) Philippians 3:2

DOGS … MEN WHO DO EVIL … MUTILATORS / PHILIPPIANS 3:2

There is little doubt that Paul experienced his greatest grief in ministry because of those who twisted and misrepresented the true message of Christ and those who compromised or abandoned their faith as a result. His love for Christ, the church and the true message of spiritual salvation through faith in Christ was so strong that it caused him to boldly oppose those who perverted the truth. He described those who started such deception as “dogs” and “men who do evil” Philippians 1:17; Galatians 1:9; Matthew 23) because of the seriousness of their error and its spiritually destructive, devouring results. “Mutilators of the flesh” is Paul’s expression for the rite of circumcision as taught by the Judaizers (Galatians 2:4), who claimed that the Old Testament sign of circumcision (cutting away the foreskin from the penis) was necessary for salvation (Galatians 2:12). These false teachers had so distorted the meaning and purpose of the old covenant sign of circumcision that it had become nothing more than a useless cutting of the body (Philippians 3:3). Paul states that true circumcision is a result of the Holy Spirit’s work in the heart of a person when sin and evil are cut away (Philippians 3:3; Romans 2:29; Romans 2:25-29; Colossians 2:11).

FOR EVERYONE LOOKS OUT FOR HIS OWN INTERESTS / PHILIPPIANS 2:21

There are ministers who preach, teach, pastor, administrate or write, not out of genuine concern for the advancement of Christ’s message, but for their own interests, glory, prestige and selfish ambition. Rather than working to please the Lord Jesus, they try to please people and gain their favor (Philippians 2:20-21; 1:15; 2 Timothy 4:10, 16). Such ministers are not true servants of the Lord.

TIMOTHY / PILIPPIANS 2:19

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Philippians 2:19

But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state.

TIMOTHY / PILIPPIANS 2:19

Timothy was a good example of what a godly minister and missionary should be. He was a passionate and obedient student of God’s Word (2 Timothy 3:15), a worthy servant of Christ (1 Thessalonians 3:2), a man of good reputation (Acts 16:2), loved and faithful (1 Corinthians 4:17), genuinely concerned for others (Philippians 2:20), dependable (2 Timothy 4:9, 21) and devoted to Paul (his mentor) and the message of Christ (Philippians 2:22; Romans 16:21).

POURED OUT LIKE A DRINK OFFERING / PHILIPPIANS 2:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Philippians 2:17-18

Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all. 18 For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me.

POURED OUT LIKE A DRINK OFFERING / PHILIPPIANS 2:17

The Old Testament drink offering was often presented with special sacrifices or burnt offerings to God (Numbers 15:1-12; 28:7, 24). It was either poured over the sacrifice or onto the dry ground with no hope or desire of retrieving it or having anything left. Paul’s love and concern for the Philippians was so earnest that he was willing to give his life for them, as if it were an offering to God.

  1. Paul would not consider it a regret, but a joy and privilege, to make the ultimate personal sacrifice, if only it would deepen their faith in and love for Christ (2 Timothy 4:6).
  2. If Paul had such sacrificial love for his spiritual children (those he led into a personal relationship with Christ), what sacrifice and suffering should we be willing to endure for the faith of our own children or those whom God has entrusted us to lead? In order to help our children to become as complete as possible in their relationship with the Lord, it may become necessary for us to pour out our lives as an offering to the Lord. As parents of spiritual leaders, we ought to be prepared to make such a sacrifice.
