And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman.

CUSHITE WIFE / NUMBERS 12:1

Moses’ marriage to a Cushite woman was neither morally nor legally wrong. Miriam and Aaron’s complaint was a deceitful way to cover their jealousy of Moses’ authority (Numbers 12:2).

(KJV) Numbers 11:29

And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the Lord’S people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them!

THAT ALL … WERE PROPHETS / NUMBERS 11:29

When Eldad and Medad kept prophesying in the camp, Joshua wanted Moses to stop them. Moses, however, had learned his lesson. He saw that the normal level of spiritual life desired for all God’s people was that they could prophesy when God’s Spirit was upon them. In Old Testament times, the Holy Spirit only came upon or filled a few. This is how they were given special spiritual power for service or prophecy. Joel prophesied that a time would come when all God’s people would be filled with the Spirit (Joel 2:28-29). This prophecy was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost when the Spirit was poured out on “all people” (Acts 2:4; Acts 2:16-17). Believers who have not been baptized in the Holy Spirit are not experiencing all that God has promised them and what Jesus waits to give them (Acts 1:8; Acts 2:39: 1 Corinthians 14:1-2, 5, 39).

SPIRIT RESTED ON THEM THEY PROPHESIED / NUMBERS 11:25

(KJV) Numbers 11:25

And the Lord came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.

SPIRIT RESTED ON THEM THEY PROPHESIED / NUMBERS 11:25

Scripture teaches that prophecy is often associated with the moving of God’s Spirit upon His people (1 Samuel 10:5-6; Joel 2:28). The book of Acts records several occasions when Spirit-filled believers prophesied after having received the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. They were given the ability to speak in other tongues as they were inspired by the Spirit (Acts 2:4; Acts 10:44-47; Acts 19:6).

YOU HAVE REJECTED THE LORD / NUMBERS 11:20

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 11:20

But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised the Lord which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?

YOU HAVE REJECTED THE LORD / NUMBERS 11:20

The people complained bitterly. They were like spoiled children who cried to have their own way (Numbers 11:1; Numbers 11:4; Numbers 11:5-6). God let them have what they wanted. But with the meat He also “sent a wasting disease upon them” (Psalms 106:15; Psalms 78:29-33). This episode is a serious warning about insisting on having our own way and desires, rather than humbly submitting to God’s way and being grateful for His provisions. To reject God’s way of leading and keeping us is equal to our standing against God in unbelief and rebellion. Just as this rebellion brought God’s judgment on the Israelites (Psalms 78:17-22), so our rebellion will bring God’s judgment on us.

CARRY THEM … AS A NURSE / NUMBERS 11:12

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 11:12

Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?

CARRY THEM … AS A NURSE / NUMBERS 11:12

Moses expected to lead a triumphant army into the promised land. Instead, the people were acting like spiritual babies. Moses felt it was too much for him to bear the responsibility of all the needs and complaints. So, God took off the Spirit that was on Moses and put in on the seventy elders to help him in spiritual leadership (Numbers 11:16-17). Thus, Moses knew that by the Spirit’s power he could face the challenges of any task to which God called him. Then he knew that he did not have to bear the burdens in his own strength.

THE RABBLE … BEGAN TO CRAVE / NUMBERS 11:4

And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?

THE RABBLE … BEGAN TO CRAVE / NUMBERS 11:4

The people in this mob, or unruly crowd, were not Israelites. Rather, they joined Israel during the exodus (Exodus 12:38). They influenced Israel to rebel against God and caused them to hunger after the vain pleasures of Egypt (Numbers 11:5).

THE PEOPLE COMPLAINED / NUMBERS 11:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 11:1

And when the people complained, it displeased the Lord: and the Lord heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the Lord burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp.

THE PEOPLE COMPLAINED / NUMBERS 11:1

After only three days into their journey (Numbers 10:33), the people began to grumble and complain because the journey was more difficult than they had anticipated.

  1. They quickly forgot their deliverance from slavery and God’s mighty acts on their behalf. They would not trust God and commit their future to Him. This brought God’s anger and judgment upon them.
  2. As New Testament believers, we must never forget to show our gratefulness for Christ’s sacrificial death for us. Jesus provided our deliverance from sin and God’s gracious provision for guidance and blessing in life.

COME WITH US / NUMBERS 10:29

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 10:29

And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses’ father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the Lord said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the Lord hath spoken good concerning Israel.

COME WITH US / NUMBERS 10:29

Moses invited his brother-in-law, who was not an Israelite, to come with them and share the good things God had promised to Israel. The opportunity was always available for the Gentiles to join Israel in making the God of Israel their God. By doing so, they could also share in God’s promises and blessings. It seems that Hobab rejected the invitation at first but perhaps followed sometime later (Judges 1:16; 4:11). Later, Rahab, Ruth and many other Gentiles found acceptance and blessing with the Lord and His people.

YOU WILL BE REMEMBERED / NUMBERS 10:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 10:9

And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before the Lord your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies.

YOU WILL BE REMEMBERED / NUMBERS 10:9

God would help His people in war only if He was called upon by the sound of the trumpets (Exodus 28:12, 29; 39:7). That is to say, God placed certain conditions on the Israelites in order to receive His help. Likewise, God may not move on our behalf if we refuse to draw near to Him in prayer. Prayer is our trumpet call. It is a cry for His grace, protection and presence.

(KJV) Numbers 9:15-23

CLOUD … FIRE / NUMBERS 9:15-23

The cloud by day that looked like fire at night served as a sign. It represented divine provision, protection and guidance for Israel in the desert.

  1. The Bible points out that the people were to break down the camp and move or remain in camp only as the supernatural sign remained or moved. However, God’s guidance did not take away the need for human wisdom and planning. For example, Moses asked Hobab to advise them about the best places to camp in the desert (Numbers 10:29-32).
  2. Obeying God and following His will are, therefore, dependent on both God’s supernatural guidance and our own wisdom. But our wisdom is always based on the principles of God’s Word. It is important that we remain close to Him at all times and not separate ourselves from His protection and will.
  3. God’s promise, which was made in the Old Testament to lead His people, still applies to all who believe. He will guide us by His Word and by His Spirit (Romans 8:4). He will make straight the paths of all who acknowledge and accept Him as their God, Savior and guide (Proverbs 3:6; Psalms 37:23; Acts 5:19-20; 8:26; 13:1-4).
