TO OPPOSE MOSES / NUMBERS 16:3

(KJV) Numbers 16:3

And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the Lord?

TO OPPOSE MOSES / NUMBERS 16:3

The story of Korah, Dathan and Abiram involves three Levites who joined forces to get more power and a higher position for themselves as priests (Numbers 16:10). They challenged Moses’ authority. They resisted God’s command that Aaron alone was to be high priest (Numbers 16:3-11). By their actions, they were rejecting God and His revealed word about who would lead God’s people (Numbers 12:10). As a result, God sent His just condemnation (Numbers 16:31-35). The same judgment awaits all in God’s kingdom who “love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats” (Matthew 23:6).

(KJV) Numbers 15:31

Because he hath despised the word of the Lord, and hath broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him.

DESPISED THE LORD’S WORD / NUMBERS 15:31

God distinguished between unintentional sins (sins committed but not deliberately or willfully) (Numbers 15:22-29) and intentional sins (sins committed willfully in defiance of God and His Word Numbers 15:30-31). Unintentional sin required atonement (Numbers 15:24-28), though it did not separate one from God’s chosen people. Deliberate and defiant sin, however, separated a person from the people of God and the redemption provided for them (Numbers 15:30-31; 1 John 3:15).

YOUR BODIES WILL FALL / NUMBERS 14:29

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 14:29

Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward which have murmured against me.

YOUR BODIES WILL FALL / NUMBERS 14:29

The New Testament states clearly that God intended His judgment on Israel at that point in their journey to serve as a warning for all believers (1 Corinthians 10:11).

  1. The Israelites had the good news preached to them (Hebrews 4:6), were redeemed by the blood (Exodus 6:6; 12:13) and passed through the Red Sea (Exodus 14:21-22). They were baptized (compare Exodus 14:19-20; Exodus 14:29-30 with 1 Corinthians 10:2), ate spiritual food (Exodus 16:4; 1 Corinthians 10:3) and drank spiritual drink, the living water of Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4). They were also led by the Holy Spirit (Numbers 11:17-25).
  2. In spite of this redemption and experience of grace, the people grumbled against God (Numbers 14:2, 27), hardened their hearts (Hebrews 3:8), rebelled against Him (Numbers 14:2, 9), treated Him with disrespect and unbelief (Numbers 14:11; Numbers 14:23), tested Him (Numbers 14:22), disobeyed His commands (Numbers 14:41) and turned away from following Him (Numbers 14:43). 
  3. Their disobedience brought on them God’s wrath (1 Corinthians 10:5-10; Hebrews 3:10, 17), death and destruction (Numbers 14:29, 35), failure to enter the land of Canaan (Numbers 14:22-23) and loss of the presence of God’s rest (Psalms 95:7-11; Hebrews 3:11, 18).
  4. Because of Israel’s failure in the desert, believers are encouraged to “see to it … that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God” (Hebrews 3:12) and fails to “enter that rest,” heaven (Hebrews 4:11).

EGYPTIANS WILL HEAR ABOUT IT! / NUMBERS 14:13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 14:13

And Moses said unto the Lord, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)

EGYPTIANS WILL HEAR ABOUT IT! / NUMBERS 14:13

Moses is a classic example of a person who is completely dedicated to God. He was more concerned about God’s reputation than his own success and honor (Numbers 14:12). When believers gratefully understand the Lord God and His holy love given through Christ, they too will desire above all else to declare the works of God and give Him glory (Numbers 14:21-22). Believers should represent Jesus Christ through their lives in such a way that unbelievers cannot find fault with the Lord.

And the Lord said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?

REFUSE TO BELIEVE IN ME / NUMBERS 14:11

At the heart of Israel’s rebellion was unbelief, which grew out of their failure to remember God’s past faithfulness, to trust Him as their Lord and to accept Him at His word. By their way of thinking, they could no longer rely on the Lord in all circumstances.

  1. To believe in God means to accept all He says as truth and act accordingly. The evidence is living a life by His promises, walking in His ways and loving Him with all our being (Deuteronomy 10:12).
  2. The presence of faith causes us to be accepted by God and counted righteous before Him (Genesis 15:6). The absence of faith condemns us (John 3:36).

JOSHUA … CALEB / NUMBERS 14:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 14:6-7

And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes: 7 And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.

JOSHUA … CALEB / NUMBERS 14:6

Both Joshua and Caleb opposed the majority opinion of the spies (Numbers 13:25-33). Joshua and Caleb based their report on a firm commitment to God and a full confidence in His promises to Israel. They refused to accept the overwhelming decision of God’s people – even at the risk of losing their own lives (Numbers 14:6-10). This major event in Israel’s desert journey teaches us that we must not assume that the majority opinion, even of the church, is always right. Faithful believers must be willing to stand on God’s Word even if the majority is against them (2 Timothy 1:15).

A BAD REPORT / NUMBERS 13:32

(KJV) Numbers 13:32

And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.

A BAD REPORT / NUMBERS 13:32

The unbelief of the ten spies had two dimensions:

  1. God’s past faithfulness had not won the loyalty of the hearts of these ten men.
  2. They did not trust in God and His promises concerning their future (Genesis 15:18; Genesis 17:8; Exodus 33:2). Their lack of faith was the opposite of the confidence and hope in God that Caleb and Joshua showed (Numbers 14:6).

THERE STOOD MIRIAM – LEPROUS / NUMBERS 12:10

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 12:10-11

And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous. 11 And Aaron said unto Moses, Alas, my lord, I beseech thee, lay not the sin upon us, wherein we have done foolishly, and wherein we have sinned.

THERE STOOD MIRIAM – LEPROUS / NUMBERS 12:10

The act of Miriam and Aaron to question Moses’ authority was a sin because it showed that they did not fear God or respect God’s word through His prophet, Moses. Moses was the mediator of the old covenant, just as Jesus is the mediator of the new covenant (Hebrews 3:2-6). God spoke directly to Moses (Numbers 12:8). Therefore, Moses’ word to the people was based on the full authority of God’s word. Though Miriam and Aaron were leaders in Israel, they had no right to challenge Moses’ authority. Just as God showed them that they were not on the same level as Moses, so believers today have no right to put themselves on the same level as Scripture (God’s Word of full authority).

MOSES … HUMBLE / NUMBERS 12:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 12:3

 (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)

MOSES … HUMBLE / NUMBERS 12:3

The reference to Moses as the humblest man on earth is probably an extra comment added by Joshua after Moses’ death to give a clearer picture of the leader. Moses’ humility lay in his trust in God as Lord, making him free of selfishness and ungodly ambitions. When challenged or threatened, Moses depended on God. God was his source for help and his defense. Scripture assures us that God delights to come to the aid of the humble (Psalms 22:26; 25:9; 147:6; 149:4; Matthew 5:5; 1 Peter 5:6). Jesus, a prophet like Moses (Acts 7:37), was gentle and humble in heart (Matthew 11:29). He too trusted in God in all things, including times of persecution (1 Peter 2:23).
