DO NOT RESIST AN EVIL PERSON / MATTHEW 5:39

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 5:39

But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

DO NOT RESIST AN EVIL PERSON / MATTHEW 5:39

Jesus is not talking about letting wicked people get away with terrible behavior or refusing to apply proper justice toward those who are evil (Romans 13:1-4). The verses that follow (Matthew 5:43-48) clarify that Jesus is referring to loving and showing kindness to one’s enemies (Matthew 5:44; Luke 6:27). When we are wronged, we are not to react in a spirit of hatred but in a way that shows Christlike character and values. Our actions toward those who are unkind to us should cause them to consider what our Lord is like. Our example might lead them to accept Christ as their Savior and Lord (the Leader and authority over their lives). For examples of this type of godly spirit, compare Genesis 13:1-13 with Genesis 14:14, and Genesis 50:19-21 with Genesis 37:18-28; also 1 Samuel 24 and 1 Samuel 26; Luke 23:34; Acts 7:60.

LOOKS LUSTFULLY / MATTHEW 5:28

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 5:28

But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

LOOKS LUSTFULLY / MATTHEW 5:28

Believers who claim that Christ’s followers are no longer obligated to follow God’s Old Testament law (Matthew 5:17) must keep in mind that Jesus holds His New Testament followers – including us today – to an even higher standard.

  1. In this case, Jesus not only condemns that act of adultery (sexual activity with anyone other than one’s own spouse) but also the unrestrained imagination and uncontrolled desire. The Lord is not referring to a passing thought that Satan may place in a person’s mind or an improper desire that arises suddenly. It is not a sin to be tempted (unless we foolishly and willingly put ourselves in a wrong situation). The problem comes when we allow ungodly thoughts to linger in our minds. We must not deceive ourselves; to imagine and think about immoral desires is the same as giving approval to them. These kinds of thoughts make it easier to act them out when tempting situations arise. The inner desire for ungodly sexual pleasure, thought upon a great deal and not resisted, is sin.
  2. Christians must be particularly careful to avoid situations that will stir up lustful or pleasure-seeking desires that are not consistent with God’s plans and timing for us. This includes exposing ourselves to images of immorality shown in movies or found in literature. We must maintain a spiritual balance in the things that we do for entertainment (1 Corinthians 6:15,18; Galatians 5:19, 21; Ephesians 5:5; Colossians 3:5; 2 Timothy 2:22; Titus 2:12; Hebrews 13:4; James 1:14; 1 Peter 2:11; 2 Peter 3:3; 1 John 2:16) because Satan wants to cause our moral downfall.

In the area of maintaining sexual purity, both women and men have a responsibility. Both must practice modesty in words, actions and how they dress. For example, a Christian woman must be careful not to dress in a way that promotes lustful desires or attracts undue attention to her body, thus creating temptation for men. Dressing without modesty is certainly not pleasing to God (1 Timothy 2:9; 1 Peter 3:2-3). Doing something that encourages another person to lust is just as wrong as lingering on thoughts about sexual activity outside of marriage. Likewise, men must guard their hearts and minds by not exposing themselves to situations or media that may cause them to have lustful thoughts toward women.

ANGRY … RACA … FOOL / MATTHEW 5:22

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 5:22

But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

ANGRY … RACA … FOOL / MATTHEW 5:22

Jesus is not speaking of a justified anger at those who are wicked and cruel (John 2:13-17). Rather, He is condemning the act of judging another out of anger and with the desire to harm or kill another person. “Reca” is a term of hatred and is much like calling a person an “empty headed fool.” Calling a person a “godless fool” in anger may indicate a heart attitude that places one “in danger of the fire of hell.”

UNLESS YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS / MATTHEW 5:20

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Matthew 5:20

For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

UNLESS YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS / MATTHEW 5:20

The Pharisees and teachers lived by the law and still were not right with God because their “righteousness” was external only. They kept many rules, prayed, praised, fasted, read God’s Word and attended worship services. However, they substituted the outward actions for the correct inner attitudes and true devotion to God. We must have both. Jesus said that in order to truly be right with God, one’s heart and spirit – not just outward actions – must conform to God’s standard and purposes because we love and trust Him (Mark 7:6).

GREAT IN THE KINGDOM / MATTHEW 5:19

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Matthew 5:19

Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

GREAT IN THE KINGDOM / MATTHEW 5:19

Our place in the kingdom of heaven will be determined by our attitude toward God’s law and by how we influence others in relation to His law. If we truly love God, we will not feel and act as if His commands are a burden on us (1 John 5:3). Those who love God will love His laws and commands (Psalms 119:47, 147). We must be careful that our example inspires others to live by God’s standards and that we do not cause others to challenge or compromise God’s standard by acting as if they do not matter in today’s world. Our degree of faithfulness in this respect will determine our degree of honor in heaven.

THE LAW TO FULFILL / MATTHEW 5:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Matthew 5:17

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

THE LAW TO FULFILL / MATTHEW 5:17

The “Law” refers to the first five books of the Old Testament. The “Prophets” include:

    1. The books called the Latter Prophets (the Major Prophet [Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel, although Daniel is sometimes classified differently because of its focus on the end time], along with the 12 Minor Prophets, which close out the Old Testament).
    2. The books called the Former Prophets (Joshua, Judges, Samuel and Kings). Other parts of the Old Testament, referred to as the Writings, can also be classified as prophecy (Matthew 13:35, which refers to Psalms 78:2 by saying “what was spoken through the prophet”). Taken together, “the Law and Prophets” include the whole Old Testament (or “old covenant”) – which outlines God’s ways of maintaining a relationship with humankind before He sent Christ to fulfill His highest plan. The Old Testament actually foreshadows, or previews, all that Jesus Christ would accomplish and fulfill. It is His intention that the spiritual requirements of God’s law – the truths and principles behind His first covenant – will also be fulfilled in the lives of His followers (Romans 3:31; 8:4). The believer’s relation to God’s law involves the following:
    1. The law that Christians are responsible to keep contains the ethical and moral principles of the Old Testament (Matthew 7:12; 22:36-40; Romans 3:31; Galatians 5:14), as well at the teachings of Christ and the apostles (the pioneers and leaders in the early church who wrote many of the New Testament books, Matthew 28:20; 1 Corinthians 7:19; 9:21; Galatians 6:2). These laws reveal God’s character, desires, standards and general purposes for all people, which still apply today. Old Testament laws that applied directly to the nation of Israel – such as the sacrificial, ceremonial, social or civil laws – are no longer binding on New Testament Christians (Hebrews 10:1-4; Leviticus 1:2-3; 24:10). However, these laws may be based on principles that should still guide our behavior.
    2. For Christians, the law is not a system of legal commands and rules by which we can earn forgiveness and spiritual salvation (Galatians 2:16,19). Rather, the law is and must always be seen as a moral code of conduct for those who are already in a right relationship with God through faith in Christ. By obeying the commands and living by God’s standard, Christians show their gratitude to Christ for saving them and living through them (Romans 6:15-22).
    3. Faith in Christ is the starting point of fulfilling God’s law. Through faith, God becomes our Father (John 1:12). This means that we should obey God not just because He is the sovereign Lawgiver (with all power and authority to set the standard and to do as He chooses), but because we are His children, and He is our Father (Galatians 4:6).
    4. Because of their faith in and love for Christ, His followers want to live by His laws and standards (Romans 16:25-26; Hebrews 10:16). For them, it is not simply a matter of duty, but desire and gratitude, this desire comes as a result of God’s grace (undeserved favor, love and enablement, Romans 5:21) and His Holy Spirit living within them (Romans 8:13; Galatians 3:5, 14). Christians fulfill God’s law by living according to the desires and guidance of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:4-14). The Spirit helps them overcome and “put to death” the ungodly desires and behaviors of their human nature and to fulfill God’s desires and purposes (Romans 8:13; Matthew 7:21). The Spirit’s work is crucial because outward obedience to God’s law must come from the inner transformation of a person’s heart and spirit (Matthew 5:21-28).
    5. Having been freed from slavery to sin, Christ’s followers willingly choose to submit to God’s control and to become “slaves to righteousness” (Romans 6:18-22). By following the principle of “faith,” they come “under Christ’s law” (1 Corinthians 9:21) for the primary purpose of influencing others for Christ. By doing what is best for God’s kingdom and by looking to benefit others more than ourselves, we can “fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2) and show our faithfulness to the moral requirements of God’s law (Romans 7:4; Galatians 3:19; Matthew 5:16-25

Jesus took special care to teach that, as an ongoing condition of entering the kingdom of heaven, we must do His Father’s will (God’s desires and purposes for us, Matthew 7:21).

LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE THAT THEY MAY SEE YOUR GOOD DEEDS / MATTHEW 5:14-16

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Matthew 5:14-16

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE THAT THEY MAY SEE YOUR GOOD DEEDS / MATTHEW 5:14-16

In Jesus’ time, people used small clay lamps that burned olive oil drawn up by a wick. As Christians, we should be like these simple lamps, providing light in the spiritually dark conditions of this present world (Proverbs 4:19; Matthew 4:16; John 3:19; Romans 1:21; Ephesians 4:18; 5:8, 11; 2 Peter 1:19). Our lives should stand out from other people in society in a positive and spiritually enlightening way (1 Peter 2:9). After all, genuine faith in Christ cannot be hidden, but will be evident to those around us, many of whom are looking for direction and hope in their lives. As Christians, we have the privilege of lighting the way to God by reflecting the life, love and light of His Son, Jesus (John 1:5; 12:35; 2 Corinthians 4:6). This happens not only through words, but often more effectively through actions. In order to truly show people who Jesus is and what He is like, we must follow His example and be among people as news who serve (Luke 22:27). We should actively look for ways to assist others and meet their needs at home, at school, on the job and in every aspect of life. By serving people, we reflect Christ’s humility (Matthew 20:26-28; Philippians 2:7) and show His compassion. We break down barriers of resistance and opposition to the truth of God’s Word and the reality of Jesus’ life-changing power.   We can serve people through simple acts of kindness (Colossians 3:12) and by meeting practical needs (1 John 3:17-18). Of course, we must “always be prepared to give an answer” (1 Peter 3:15) for the reason for our hope and the motivation behind our actions. But many people will not pay attention to the message unless it comes from someone who cares enough to meet their practical needs. For example, there may be times when we must give food to a person’s stomach before we can feed his or her soul. Or perhaps we need to help clean up a neighborhood before we try to help clean up the lives of the people living in that neighborhood. When you work against injustice, share food and clothes, help your family and anyone else who is oppressed, “then your light will rise in the darkness” (Isaiah 58:6-10). Through practical service and loving interaction, we open the door to share the bold and true message of Christ. Then we will more likely be able to influence people to consider Christ’s claims, believe His Word and yield their lives to Him.

PERSECUTED BECAUSE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS / MATTHEW 5:10

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Matthew 5:10

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

PERSECUTED BECAUSE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS / MATTHEW 5:10

People who follow Christ and live according to the principles of God’s Word will face opposition and rejection.

    1. Those who uphold God’s standards of truth, justice and purity, refusing to follow and walk in the ungodly lifestyles of society (Revelation 2; Revelation 3:1-4, 14-22), will be unpopular. They will receive criticism and opposition from the world (Matthew 10:22; 24:9; John 15:19) and at times from those within the church (Acts 20:28-31; 2 Corinthians 11:3-15; 2 Timothy 1:15; 3:8-14; 4:16). The Bible teaches that this is a time to rejoice (Matthew 5:12) because God reserves a special blessing for those who suffer for His sake (2 Corinthians 1:5; 2 Timothy 2:12; 1 Peter 1:7; 4:13).
    2. Individual Christians and churches that lose these qualities will become spiritually “lukewarm” (unconcerned, unresponsive, lazy; Revelation 3:15-16), a condition that suppresses or destroys the activity and power of the Holy Spirit. Without the power and presence of the Holy Spirit, churches will completely lose their effectiveness and will be rejected and “thrown out” by God.
    3. As a result, these Christians who are not seasoned with salt will be “trampled by men,” which means they will end up giving in to the ways and values of an ungodly society. Taking this path will bring destruction in the end (Deuteronomy 28:13, 43, 48; Judges 2:20-22).

    THE PEACEMAKERS / MATTHEW 5:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Matthew 5:9

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

    THE PEACEMAKERS / MATTHEW 5:9

The “peacemakers” are those who have been reconciled to God (restored to a right relationship with Him). Peace with God is available to anyone who accepts the sacrifice Jesus made for their sins by His death on the cross (Romans 5:1; Ephesians 2:14-16). Those who truly have peace with God will make every effort to show the peace to others including their enemies – and to bring others into a relationship of peace with God.

THE PURE IN HEART / MATTHEW 5:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Matthew 5:8

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

THE PURE IN HEART / MATTHEW 5:8

The “pure in heart” are those who have devoted themselves to God and have been freed from sin’s power by God’s grace (His undeserved favor, love, help and enablement). That grace now enables them to please God and bring honor to Him by the way they live.

    1. They seek to have the same attitude that God has – a love for what is true and right and a hatred of evil (Hebrews 1:9). Their heart (which includes mind, will and emotions; is in tune with God’s heart (1 Samuel 13:14; Matthew 22:37; 1 Timothy 1:5). This means that their thoughts and desires are pure according to His standard of holiness (moral purity, spiritual integrity, separation from evil and dedication to God).

God requires holiness in His followers because He is holy and because only the pure in heart “will see God.” To see God means to be His child and experience a close personal relationship with Him, both now and in His future eternal kingdom (Exodus 33:11; Revelation 21:7; Revelation 22:4).
