JESUS HAD NOT YET BEEN GLORIFIED / JOHN 7:39

(KJV) John 7:39

(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

JESUS HAD NOT YET BEEN GLORIFIED / JOHN 7:39

This refers to the glory and honor Jesus would gain by dying on the cross for our sins (John 12:23-24) and being raised from the dead. Jesus had to complete His work on earth before the Holy Spirit could begin His work in the church. It is also true in individual lives today: one cannot receive the Spirit until he or she deals with sin (until it is confessed to Christ, forgiven and abandoned). “The Spirit” refers to all the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers, including spiritual birth and renewal (John 20:22) and the baptism in the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4). For an overview of the Holy Spirit’s involvement in people’s lives.

AS THE SCRIPTURE HAS SAID – STREAMS OF LIVING WATER / JOHN 7:38

AS THE SCRIPTURE HAS SAID

Jesus is referring to the gift of the Holy Spirit that would be given to His followers after He left the earth (John 16:7). The Spirit guides and empowers Christ’s followers in a way that allows them to experience his overflowing life. As Christians respond to the Spirit’s direction and exercise His power, this “living water” will “flow” out to others with the spiritually healing, life-giving message of Jesus Christ (John 10:10; John 14:12; John 15:5; Psalms 1:3; Psalms 46:4; Isaiah 32:15; 44:3; 58:11: Jeremiah 31:12; Ezekiel 47:1-12; Joel 3:18; Zechariah 14:8).

YOU ARE GODS? / JOHN 10:34

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 10:34

Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?

YOU ARE GODS? / JOHN 10:34

Jesus is not teaching that His followers are to consider themselves gods. On the contrary, those who declare themselves to be gods – or who live like they are their own gods – will fall under God’s severe judgment (Jeremiah 10:11).

  1. Jesus was quoting from Psalms 82:6 in reference to the judges (other leaders and rulers) who were appointed by God for specific tasks (Exodus 22:8; Deuteronomy 1:17; 2 Chronicles 19:6 where God gives His leaders and judges authority to carry out responsibilities on His behalf). How much more should Jesus be recognized as God, since He was sent by the Gather to fulfill His highest mission of spiritual justice and salvation.
  2. In this passage, Jesus uses the phrase “you are ‘gods’” in speaking to corrupt rulers who were biased toward ungodly people and were even cruel to children (Psalms 82:1-4). These rulers, who acted as if they were gods, would eventually suffer judgment and die (Psalms 82:7; 82:6).
  3. To declare oneself a god is the ultimate sin of the antichrist (2 Thessalonians 2:4, 11).

(KJV) John 14:24

He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

HE WHO DOES NOT LOVE ME / JOHN 14:24

Those who do not obey Christ’s teachings do not truly love Him, and without love for Jesus a person cannot truly possess saving faith (faith that actively entrusts one’s life to Christ and leads to a personal love relationship with Him; 1 John 2:3-4). People deny the truth of God’s Word if they say or believe that people can remain spiritually saved even though they live in ways that contradict His commands and teachings. The Holy Spirit will not remain in a person who lives in disobedience to God.

REMAIN IN MY LOVE / JOHN 15:9-10

The only faith-filled response to Christ’s love is to obey His commands. It is His love that provided the opportunity for our spiritual salvation and a personal relationship with Christ. Our obedience is a large part of maintaining that relationship and fulfilling God’s purposes for our lives (John 14:15, 21, 23). Obedience and love must always go together in our relationship with God (1 John 2:5; 5:2-3).

ETERNAL LIFE / JOHN 17:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 17:3

And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

ETERNAL LIFE / JOHN 17:3

This verse gives us a definition of Christ’s gift of eternal life. It is more than an endless existence. Eternal life is to know God, which is made possible through His Son, Jesus Christ. God in not looking to spend eternity with people who have not taken time to get to know Him in this life. Through faith and devotion to Christ, we can experience the highest fulfillment in life and accomplish the purpose God wants for us. Consider how the New Testament describes eternal life:

  1. It is a present reality (John 5:24; 10:27-28). Eternal life is something Christ’s followers receive as a gift (Romans 6:23). Christians experience it in part from the moment they accept His forgiveness for sin and yield their lives to Him. However, we do not maintain eternal life based merely on a past decision to accept Christ (John 5:24). That decision allows us to begin experiencing the benefits of this new life as we continue to grow in a relationship with Jesus. Experiencing eternal life right now requires an active, ongoing faith and a deepening relationship with Christ (1 John 5:12) because there is no eternal life apart from a relationship with Him (John 10:27; 11:25: 1 John 5:11-13).

It is a future hope. Eternal life is the glorious opportunity to live forever with God. Entering that aspect of eternal life is associated with either passing from this life through physical death or going with Christ when He returns for His faithful followers (John 14:3; Mark 10:30; 2 Timothy 1:1, 10; Titus 1:2; 3:7). But experiencing eternal life – both now and forever – is dependent on living by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:12-17; Galatians 6:8).

(KJV) John 8:12

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD / JOHN 8:12

Jesus is the true and complete revelation of God’s light (John 1:9); He removes spiritual darkness and deception by shining His light upon the right path to God and by revealing the opportunity for spiritual salvation through faith in Jesus.

  1. All those who accept Jesus’ forgiveness, abandon their own way of life, and follow Jesus are freed from the darkness of sin, the world and Satan. Those who do not follow Jesus are choosing to remain in spiritual darkness (1 John 1:6-7).
  2. “Whoever follows Me” is a present participle, indicating a continuing action – “whoever keeps on following” True Christian discipleship (following and becoming like Jesus) must be a way of life (John 8:31).

SANCTIFY THEM BY THE TRUTH / JOHN 17:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

SANCTIFY THEM BY THE TRUTH / JOHN 17:17

“Sanctify” means to make holy (morally and spiritually pure, whole, separated from evil and dedicated to God) and to separate or set apart (for God’s purposes).  The evening before His death, Jesus prays that His disciples will be holy people. He prays for them to be separated from evil in the world for the purpose of worshiping and serving God and fulfilling His purposes on earth. They must be set apart in order to be in a close relationship with a holy God, to live for Him and to be like Him. The Holy Spirit accomplishes this process of sanctification as Jesus’ followers devote themselves to living by the truth revealed to them by the Spirit (John 14:17; 16:13). The truth is both the living Word of God (Jesus John 1:1) and the written Word of God as revealed in the Bible.

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE / JOHN 8:32

Start Your Day Right Devotion

(KJV) John 8:32

And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE / JOHN 8:32

This is not speaking of philosophical truth (the idea of truth) or freedom from ignorance. In the context of human knowledge, many things are true. Yet there is only one truth that will set people free from sin, destruction, and Satan’s power. That truth is Jesus Himself and the revelation of truth in His Word. We can know that truth personally. Jesus is described as being “full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). “Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (John 1:17). He is “the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6). His message is the word of truth (Colossians 1:5; 2 Thessalonians 2:13). Here are some important observations about truth:

  1. The highest, life-saving truth is found only in God’s Word – the living Word (Christ, John 1:1, 14) and the written Word – which reveals the message of forgiveness and new life through faith in Jesus Christ.
  2. God’s Word, especially the New Testament revelation of Christ and the teaching of His apostles (those He personally commissioned to establish His original message and establish the church), presents the truth that frees people from sin, the corrupt world, and demonic powers (Ephesians 2:20).
  3. Further revelation of “truth” is not needed to complete or enhance the gospel of Christ.
  4. The truth that saves and frees people spiritually is revealed only from God “by His Spirit” (1Corinthians 2:10) and does not originate from any person or from human wisdom (1Corinthians 2:12-13).

Romans 1:25 speaks of those who “exchanged the truth of God for a lie” (Greek to pseudie, “the lie”) of Satan. At the end of time, for those who refuse “to love the truth and so be saved” (2 Thessalonians 2:10), God will send “a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness” (John 2:11-12). Thankfully, we can escape this deception and judgment by accepting and basing our lives on the truth sets us free; the lie brings us into spiritual slavery. The truth restores; the lie destroys. We are called to love Jesus and His Word so that we can know the truth that sets us free.

I AM THE TRUE VINE / JOHN 15:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

(KJV) John 15:1
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

I AM THE TRUE VINE / JOHN 15:1

The vine is frequently used in the Old Testament as a symbol of Israel (Psalms 80:8-16; Isaiah 5:1-7: Jeremiah 2:21), but it was often shown as inadequate or lacking in some way. But in this word picture, Jesus describes Himself as “the true vine” and those who have become His followers as “the branches.” By remaining attached to Him as the source of life, they produce fruit. To produce spiritual fruit means to develop godly character (Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 5:9; Philippians 1:11), set a godly example (Matthew 3:8; 7:16-20), do effective service and lead others to Christ. God is the gardener who takes care of the branches in order that they may be fruitful (John 14:2, 8). God expects all of us to grow and produce spiritual fruit (Matthew 3:8).
