Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.

MAKE THE PEOPLE HOLY / HEBREWS 13:12

Jesus’ death outside the city represented the removal of sin, just as the bodies from the Old Testament animal sacrifices were burned outside the Israelite camp. Jesus suffered outside the city gate of Jerusalem as an outcast so that He could separate His people from their old sinful lives and set them apart for God’s service.

LET US DRAW NEAR / HEBREWS 10:22

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Hebrews 10:22

Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

LET US DRAW NEAR / HEBREWS 10:22

Faith and drawing near to God through Jesus Christ are inseparable.

  1. Faith is sincerely believing in God, entrusting one’s life to His care, relying on Him for help and strength and trusting in His goodness (Hebrews 11:6; John 1:12; 5:24). By coming to God through faith in Christ, one finds mercy, grace, help (Hebrews 10:1; 4:16; 7:19), salvation (Hebrews 7:25), spiritual growth development (Hebrews 10:14) and cleansing (Hebrews 10:22).
  2. Therefore, when there is no drawing near to God in prayer and companionship with Christ, there is no saving faith (Hebrews 10:38). Jesus Himself equates faith with sincere prayer to God (Luke 18:8).

HE LEARNED OBEDIENCE / HEBREWS 5:8

(KJV) Hebrews 5:8

Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

HE LEARNED OBEDIENCE / HEBREWS 5:8

Jesus, as God’s Son in human form, learned through human experience what it means to obey God when facing intense sufferings and temptations. He learned not through trial and error, as we often do, because He never failed. Rather, He learned by actually doing – by obeying perfectly all the time. Because of that obedience He suffered greatly, even to the point of giving His life; yet He never gave in to sin. As a result of His perfection (Hebrews 5:9), He became a perfect Savior and high priest, qualified in every way (Hebrews 5:1-6) to bring us eternal salvation (Hebrews 5:9; 2:10). From Christ’s example, we learn that faithful obedience to God in a corrupt world will often lead to suffering and adversity (Hebrews 12:2; Isaiah 50:4-6; Philippians 2:8).

THE WORD OF GOD / HEBREWS 4:12

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

(KJV) Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

THE WORD OF GOD / Hebrews 4:12

The conjunction “for” connects this verse directly to Hebrews 4:11. We enter into God’s rest by submitting to the complete examination and deep spiritual surgery that comes from exposure to God’s Word. God’s Word is anything that God speaks. It is the expression of the character, desires and purposes of God Himself. We have God’s Word conveyed to us in written form through the Bible. This Word, throughout both the Old Testament and New Testament, is dynamic, active and ultimately effective in accomplishing God’s purposes. It is like a sharp sword that cuts into our innermost being in order to discern whether our thoughts and motives are worthy or unworthy, spiritual or unspiritual. Like a surgeon’s scalpel, it cuts away the spiritual corruption from our lives and brings healing, and life to those who submit to the Word in faith. Yet, kike a warrior’s sword, God’s Word brings judgment and destruction on those who openly turn from and defy it (John 6:63; 12:48).

DIVIDING SOUL AND SPIRIT

God’s Word can penetrate our lives and inner beings so precisely that it discerns and defines the obscure dividing line between “soul” and “spirit.” “Soul” (Greek psyche) refers to our inner life aside from our spiritual experience – our life in relation to ourselves (our emotions, thoughts, desires, choices). “Spirit” (Greek pneuma) here means the human spirit; in the New Testament this refers to the spiritual dimension of our being – our life in relation to God (Romans 8:10). God’s Word awakens and strengthens His life in our spirit, and it exposes our own “soulishness” (our own motives and desires) when that part of us conflicts with the life that God is developing within our spirit. By willingly submitting to God’s life-penetrating Word, our hearts will be softened and changed so that we can truly take on godly character traits and experience peace and rest with Him. The alternative is to allow our hearts to become hardened against God’s Word. This is when we lose faith and find ourselves condemned by the Word of God. Hebrews 4:12-13 remind us of the seriousness of our choices when responding to God and His Word.

OBEY THEM / HEBREWS 13:17

(KJV) Hebrews 13:17

Obey them that have the rule over you and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

OBEY THEM / HEBREWS 13:17

Obedience and faithfulness to Christian leaders, pastors and teachers must be based on a higher loyalty to God. The Christians’ loyalty on a descending scale is as follows:

  1. First, to God in a person-to-person relationship (Matthew 22:37), including faithfulness to the truth and principles of His Word.
  2. Second, to the local church body (congregation, community of true believers) as it remains faithful to God and His written Word (John 15:12; Galatians 6:10).

Third, the godly leaders within the church, as long as they remain faithful and loyal to God, to His Word and to His mission for the church.

LOOKING FORWARD TO THE CITY / HEBREWS 11:10

Abraham knew that the earthly promised land was not the end of his journey of faith. Rather, God’s promise pointed beyond everything on earth to the heavenly city that God has prepared for His faithful servants. Abraham serves as an example for all God’s people, reminding us that we are only traveling through this world on our way to God’s city and His home for us in heaven. We are not to look for unending security in this present life or be attached to this present world (Hebrews 11:14, 16: 13:14). We must consider ourselves as strangers and exiles on the earth. This is not our homeland; the end of our journey will be “a better country” (Hebrews 11:16), “the heavenly Jerusalem” (Hebrews 12:22) and the “city that is to come” (Hebrews 13:14).

BELIEVE THAT HE EXISTS / HEBREWS 11:6

This verse describes the convictions – the deep convincing beliefs – that are a part of saving faith.

  1. We must believe in the existence of a personal, infinite, holy God who cares for us.
  2. We must believe that God will respond to us and reward us when we sincerely look to Him in faith, knowing that our greatest reward is the joy and presence of God Himself. He is our shield and our very great reward (Genesis 15:1; Deuteronomy 4:29; Matthew 7:7-8: John 14:2).
  3. We must diligently pursue a deeper relationship with God and passionately desire His presence, power and purpose in our lives. (John 1:12; 5:24).

ABEL … ENOCH … NOAH / HEBREWS 11:4-7

Start Your Day Right Devotion

(KJV) Hebrews 11:4-7

By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

ABEL … ENOCH … NOAH / HEBREWS 11:4-7

These three godly men are selected for special mention from the time of creation until the great flood that devastated the earth (Genesis 6 – 8). Their lives are examples of various aspects of a life of faith.

  • By faith, Abel (son of Adam and Eve) was commended as a true worshiper who gave his absolute best and honored God in the way God prescribed (Hebrews 11:4). Because of his bold commitment, he became the first martyr (one killed for faith or for following God, (Hebrews 11:4).
  • By faith, Enoch “walked with God” (Genesis 5:24) in great intimacy, so much that he was taken from this earth without dying (Hebrews 11:5).
  • By faith, Noah believed what God said about the future disaster coming on the earth and was willing to risk his reputation on God’s warning coming to pass (Hebrews 11:7).

BY FAITH WE UNDERSTAND / HEBREWS 1:3

Start Your Day Right Devotion

(KJV) Hebrews 1:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

BY BAITH WE UNDERSTAND / HEBREWS 1:3

“By Faith” occurs at the beginning of the sentence for emphasis and becomes an introductory phrase to over 17 more examples of faith throughout the chapter. The phrase gives greater emphasis with each example. We “understand,” or obtain knowledge, in two basic ways:

The natural mind cannot understand things given by God

  1. Through the five physical senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell) combined with natural reasoning and
  2. Knowledge about God and the spiritual realm that happens first at the spirit level – through revelation by God – and is the accepted (understood) “by faith.”

The natural mind cannot understand things given by God (1 Corinthians 2:12-14), including creation. Only a spiritually renewed mind can comprehend such things. For this reason, the testimony of God’s Word is absolutely vital to faith in the sense that we must take God at His Word in order to understand “that the universe was formed at God’s command” (Genesis 1:3Genesis 1:6-9Genesis 1:14Genesis1:20-26Psalms 33:6, 9Isaiah 55: 10-11Colossians 1:16-17).

NOW FAITH IS / HEBREWS 11:1

Start Your Day Right Devotion

(KJV) Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

NOW FAITH IS / HEBREWS 11:1

Hebrews 11 gives evidence that true, enduring faith involves trusting God in all circumstances. This trust enables the believer to remain loyal to God and His Word at all times. Faith takes God at His Word and relies completely on His promises. It does not base its hope on visible circumstances, but on confidence in spiritual realities (Hebrews 11:1). Such a faith enables us to have a right relationship with God (Hebrews 11:4). It causes us to pursue a deeper relationship with God (Hebrews 11:6), trust His goodness (Hebrews11:6) and have full confidence in His Word (Hebrews 11:7, 11). Faith obeys His commands (Hebrew 11:8) and guides us so that we come to base our lives on His promises (Hebrews 11:13, 39), reject the evil ways of this present world (Hebrews 11:13) and pursue a heavenly home (Hebrews 11:14-16; 13:13-14). It teaches us to endure great challenges and difficulties (Hebrews 11:17-19), inspire faith in future generations (Hebrews 11:21), refuse to indulge in sin’s pleasures (Hebrews 11:25), endure persecution (Hebrews11:27), perform mighty works and miracles in God’s power and for His honor (Hebrews 11:33-35) and also suffer for God (Hebrews 11:25, 35-38). Faith says we will not return to the useless and ungodly ways of the world (Hebrews 11:15-16).
