THRONES ON WHICH WERE SEATED / REVELATION 20:4

(KJV) Revelation 20:4

And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

THRONES ON WHICH WERE SEATED / REVELATION 20:4

Those who sit on the thrones with authority to judge (or “rule”) with Christ during the thousand years are probably faithful followers of Christ from the church age (before the rapture of the church and the judgments of the great tribulation). They are the overcomers from all churches of all time (Revelation 2:7) and may also include God’s faithful people throughout the Old Testament period (Ezekiel 37:11-14; Ephesians 2:14-22; 3:6; Hebrews 11:39-40). It seems that all of these return to earth with Christ when He comes to defeat the armies of the anti-christ and establish His thousand-year reign (Revelation 19:14). Among these are Christ’s original disciples who helped establish the New Testament church; they will judge, or rule, the twelve tribes of Israel (Luke 22:30). Those who come to life after Christ’s return are said to be His faithful ones who died for their faith during the tribulation (Revelation 6:9; 12:17). They will join Christ’s faithful followers from the church age in reigning with Christ during the thousand years. John does not mention the resurrection of the faithful of Christ’s churches who have died because this occurred when Christ removed His church from the earth and took His followers to heaven prior to the great tribulation judgments (John 14:3; 1 Corinthians 15:51).

REIGNED WITH CHRIST A THOUSAND YEARS

This thousand-year reign of Christ is sometimes called “the millennium,” meaning “a thousand Years” (mille, the Latin word for “thousand,” and annus, the Latin word for “year”). The following are some of the characteristics of this millennial reign:

  1. It was predicted in the Old Testament (Isaiah 9:6; 65:19-25; Daniel 7:13-14; Micah 4:1-8; Zechariah 14:1-9; Revelation 2:25-28).
  2. This is when Satan will be bound (Revelation 20:2; Revelation 20:3).
  3. Christ’s reign will be shared by His faithful followers from throughout the church age (Revelation 2:26-27; 3:21; 5:10; 20:4), and possibly also by the resurrected Old Testament followers of God (Ezekiel 37:11-14; Ephesians 2:14-22; 3:6; Hebrews 11:39-40) and those killed for accepting Christ and remaining true to Him during the tribulation.
  4. The people ruled by Christ will consist of those on earth who were faithful to Christ during the tribulation and who survived until the Lord’s coming and those born during the millennium (Revelation 14:12; 18:4; Isaiah 65:20-23; Matthew 25:1).
  5. Those reigning with Christ will have a place of honor above all the nations, as they will minister to and rule both Israel and the other nations (Revelation 20:6; 3:21; 5:10; Matthew 19:28; Zephaniah 3:9-20).
  6. Christ’s reign will bring drastic changes affecting society. There will be peace, safety, prosperity, justice, righteousness and knowledge of God throughout the earth (Isaiah 2:2-4; 11:9-10; Micah 4:4; Zechariah 9:10; 2:5; 9:8).
  7. Nature will also be restored to its original order, perfection and beauty (Psalms 96:11-13; 98:7-9; Isaiah 11:6-8; 14:7-8; 35:1-2, 6-7; 51:3; 55:12-13; 65:25; Ezekiel 24:25; Romans 8:18+23; Isaiah 65:17-25; Ezekiel 36:8-15; Zechariah 14:8).
  8. The nations during this reign will be privileged and grateful to follow Christ in obedience to His rule. However, even under these conditions and without Satan’s influence, human nature will still cause some to choose a path of rebellion and disobedience, leading to punishment (Revelation 20:7-10).
  9. At the end of the thousand years, Jesus will turn the kingdom over to His Father (1 Corinthians 15:24). That will mark the end of time as we know it and the beginning of the final and eternal kingdom of God and the Lamb (Christ, Revelation 21:1-22:5).

It’s November! November brings a time for reflection, gratitude, and seeking God’s presence as we approach the year’s end. As the Bible reminds us. “Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His presence continually!” (1 Chronicles 16:11). KEEP HIM FROM DECEIVING THE NATIONS ANYMORE / REVELATION 20:3

(KJV) Revelation 20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

KEEP HIM FROM DECEIVING THE NATIONS ANYMORE / REVELATION 20:3

The nations that will exist during Christ’s reign on earth are formed and descended from those who are alive on earth at the end of the tribulation (Revelation 19:21; 20:4). Although throughout the Bible, including many times in Revelation, the term “nations” is used specifically to refer to the ungodly of the world, John also uses it to represent those who are spiritually saved and in right relationship with God (Revelation 21:24; 22:2).

SAY YOU ARE MY SISTER / GENESIS 12:13

(KJV) Genesis 12:11-13

And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon: 12 Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive. 13 Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.

Abram failed to trust God in this situation. His attempt to deceive the Egyptians led to embarrassment when he was asked to leave the country (Genesis 12:19-13:1). These verses show how important honesty is for God’s people. Although Abram repented, he could not keep his moral failure hidden, Abram’s bad example should challenge all believers to keep trusting God regardless of the circumstances. His example should also encourage us to see how God can bring us back into His will, even after we have failed Him.

A FAMINE IN THE LAND / GENESIS 12:10

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 12:10

And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land.

A FAMINE IN THE LAND / GENESIS 12:10

Obeying God does not mean we will never experience serious problems.

  1. Abram arrived at his destination (Canaan) and immediately faced disappointment. His wife could not have children (Genesis 11:30). He was separated from his extended family (Genesis 12:1). A sudden famine forced him to move to keep his household from starving.
  2. Abram’s example teaches those who are trying to follow God not to be surprised when they encounter things that block their way or when they face difficult situations. Problems are often God’s way of teaching believers that if they will trust and obey Him, He will work through them to accomplish His purpose (Matthew 2:13).

THE LORD APPEARED TO ABRAM / GENESIS 12:7

(KJV) Genesis 12:7

And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the Lord, who appeared unto him.

THE LORD APPEARED TO ABRAM / GENESIS 12:7

This is the first time in the Bible where it says directly that God “appeared” to someone. It is reasonable to assume, however, that God had already appeared to Adam and others who had a deep relationship with God (Genesis 2:15; Genesis 2:16; Genesis 2:22; Genesis 3:8). The fact that His appearance was like that of a human being is indicated in (Genesis 18:1-3, 9-33 (Exodus 33:18-23). When God appears in a form that we can see, it is called a “theophany,” which means God-mannifestation (Exodus 3:2). God promised to give to Abram the land of Canaan (the ancient name for Palestine), along the southeast coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.

ABRAM LEFT, AS THE LORD HAD TOLD HIM / GENESIS 12:4

From the start, the story of Abraham emphasizes that obeying God is required in order to have a saving relationship with Him.

  1. Abram obeyed God by leaving his home and country and by trusting God to guide and care for him, just as God had promised (Genesis 12:1; James 2:17; 1 John 2:4).
  2. As he did with Abram, God calls all followers of Christ to leave their former way of life in order to follow Jesus. Ultimately, they are starting their journey toward “a better country – a heavenly one” (Hebrews 11:16).

And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

ALL PEOPLES ON EARTH WILL BE BLESSED THROUGH YOU / GENESIS 12:3

This is the second prophecy in Scripture about the coming of Jesus Christ (Genesis 3:15).

  1. It refers to a spiritual blessing that would come through a descendant of Abraham. The apostle Paul writes that this blessing refers to the gospel (message of good news) of Christ offered to all the nations (Galatians 3:8, 16).
  2. God’s promise reveals that from the beginning, the purpose of the gospel was to benefit all people by telling them how they could have a personal relationship with God and discover His plans for them. God continues to accomplish this purpose today through Jesus Christ and through His Followers who are taking and sending His message to people all over the world. This verse is a foundation for missionary work throughout the world.

At first, God did not tell Abram where He would lead him (Hebrews 11:8). Instead, Abram immediately had to depend completely on the Lord for guidance.

Continual opposition to the church, the message of Christ and the truth of God’s Word is a sure sign that people are headed for eventual destruction since they are rejecting the only way to spiritual salvation (John 14:6).On the other hand, when God’s people endure opposition, rejection and persecution for the cause of Christ, this is a sure sign of the authenticity of their faith and the assurance of their salvation (2 Thessalonians 1:5).
