ASK ANYTHING ACCORDING TO HIS WILL / 1 JOHN 5:14

(KJV) 1 John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

ASK ANYTHING ACCORDING TO HIS WILL / 1 JOHN 5:14

Our prayers (as our lives) are effective in accomplishing God’s purposes only if they are fully submitted to and it tune with God, His Word, and His will for our lives. (God’s will can be described as His desires and plans based on His character and purposes.) When we pray, we are to focus on who God is and what He can accomplish through our lives if we are in right relationship with Him. Praying with such an awareness will increase our faith and dependence on God (John 14:13). We can know God’s will in many instances because it is directly revealed in His Word. At other times, it becomes clear only as we earnestly pray and rely on God to guide our lives and show us His plans. As we grow deeper in a relationship with God and better understand His character, we will better understand His desires and purposes as well. Once we know His will about any given issue or situation, then we can ask in confidence and faith. When we do this, we know that He hears us and that His purposes for us will be accomplished (1 John 3:22).

CHILDREN OBEY / EPHESIANS 6:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 6:1
Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

CHILDREN OBEY / EPHESIANS 6:1

Normally, children of Christian parents remain under parental guidance until they become part of another family unit through marriage.

  1. Small children must be taught to obey and honor their parents through godly training and instruction (Proverbs 13:24, 22:6).
  2. Older children, even after marriage, should continue to show respect for their parents’ counsel (Ephesians 6:2) and honor them in old age through care and financial support, if needed (Matthew 15:1-6).
  3. Children who honor their parents will be blessed by God, here on earth and in eternity (Ephesians 6:3).

OBEY THEM / HEBREWS 13:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

(KJV) Hebrews 13:17

Obey them that have the rule over you and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

OBEY THEM / HEBREWS 13:17

Obedience and faithfulness to Christian leaders, pastors and teachers must be based on a higher loyalty to God. The Christians’ loyalty on a descending scale is as follows:

  1. First, to God in a person-to-person relationship (Matthew 22:37), including faithfulness to the truth and principles of His Word.
  2. Second, to the local church body (congregation, community of true believers) as it remains faithful to God and His written Word (John 15:12; Galatians 6:10).

Third, the godly leaders within the church, as long as they remain faithful and loyal to God, to His Word and to His mission for the church.

(KJV) 2 Timothy 4:1-2 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;

Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.

BE PREPARED IN SEASON AND OUT OF SEASON / 2 TIMOTHY 4:1-2

A minister must be prepared in any situation to give a needed and appropriate word, whether for challenge, inspiration, correction, or encouragement. All followers of Christ should “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 Peter 3:15).

WORSHIPING … AND FASTING / ACTS 13:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

(KJV) Acts 13:2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

WORSHIPING … AND FASTING / ACTS 13:2

Spirit-filled Christmas are especially sensitive to the communication of the Holy Spirit during times of prayer and fasting (Matthew 6:16). Fasting involves going without food for a limited time in order to give greater attention to spiritual matters through prayer. The message from the Holy Spirit probably came through a prophetic gift (by which one of the believers spoke a message from God as inspired by the Holy Spirit, Acts 1:1).

FOR THE WORK TO WHICH I HVE CALLED THEM / ACTS 13:2

Paul and Barnabas were called by God into missionary service (to take Christ’s message to other people groups, countries, and cultures) and were commissioned by the church at Antioch (Acts 11:26). The nature of this work is described in Acts 9:15; 13:5; 22:14-15, 21; 26:16-18.

  1. Paul and Barnabas were called to preach the gospel (the “good news” of forgiveness and new life through faith in Christ), leading men and women into a personal relationship with Christ. Nowhere in the Bible does it indicate that New Testament missionaries were sent to other regions of the world to do social or political work only. Their goal was to introduce people to Christ (Acts 16:31; 20:21), rescue and free them from Satan’s power (Acts 26:18), invite the Holy Spirit to empower them (Acts 19:6) and establish them in local churches. By the power of the Holy Spirit living in and through them, these new Christians received and used spiritual gifts (God-given abilities for the purpose of honoring Him and benefiting the church, 1 Corinthians 12 – 13). The ministry of the Spirit allowed them, in turn, to carry out God’s life-transforming work in their communities.
  2. Christian missionaries today must be devoted to the same kind of activity; to be ministers (servants) of Christ and messengers of His gospel (“good news”). While missionaries may serve many practical needs as well (particularly in cultures that are closed to public preaching of the gospel), their primary purpose must still be to introduce people to Christ; He is the only One who can rescue them from the consequences of sin and rebellion against God and from Satan’s power (Acts 26:18). Beyond that, a missionary’s work involves discipling new believers (training them in the practical disciplines of following Christ and learning from His Word on a daily basis). This includes encouraging them to receive the Holy Spirit and His gifts (Acts 2:38; 8:17) and teaching them to obey all that Christ commanded (Matthew 28:19-20). Along with this ministry should be signs, wonders and miracles – including healing the sick and freeing those oppressed by demons (Acts 2:43; 4:30; 8:7; 10:38; Mark 16:17-18). The primary tsk of preaching the message about Jesus also should include practical and personal acts of love and kindness to those in need (Galatians 2:10). In this way, all who are called to spread Christ’s message will model their ministry on Jesus’ example (Luke 9:2).

HE HAS CHOSEN YOU / 1 THESSALONIANS 1:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 1:4
Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.

HE HAS CHOSEN YOU / 1 THESSALONIANS 1:4

God has already taken the first step in renewing our personal relationship with Him (Romans 5:8; 1 John 4:10) by sending Jesus Christ, who died to pay the price for our offenses against God. By doing so, Jesus bridged the gap between God and all humankind that was caused by sin (the tendency to go our own ungodly way). Paul’s description of God’s chosen people – those who have accepted His invitation of forgiveness and new life made available through the personal sacrifice of His Son, Jesus – is found in 1 Thessalonians 1:6-10. They imitate Christ, endure suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit and set a worthy example of faith and a right relationship with God. They now follow Christ and serve God’s purposes for their lives. In the process, they eagerly await Jesus’ return from heaven.

The misguided teaching that all people who claim that Christ is their Savior will be saved though they live unrighteous lives is not found anywhere in God’s Word. This misguided idea is a serious distortion of spiritual salvation preached by Christ and those He personally commissioned to establish His church. In order to be true followers of Christ, people must sincerely admit their sin, turn from their own way and surrender their lives to Christ (Matthew 3:2). This means that they must accept Jesus not only as Savior (the Forgiver of their sins) but also as Lord – the Leader and absolute authority over their lives (Romans 10:9). They must then continue to develop Christ’s character and live by faith and in submission to His plans and purposes (Galatians 5:22-26).

THE SPIRIT HELPS US / ROMANS 8:26

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 8:26
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

THE SPIRIT HELPS US / ROMANS 8:26

The word translated “helps” is a complex word (Greek sunantilambanetai) that means the Holy Spirit “takes hold of” (lambane tai) our weakness

  • together with us (sun) and
  • instead of us (anti) as our intercessor (one who pleads a case on behalf of another). This means that the Spirit joins with us to help and empower us to be victors – not victims – in our circumstances. But the Spirit also works apart from us to take action on our behalf. When we are helpless, the Holy Spirit is truly our “helper”.

SPIRIT HIMSELF INTERCEDES FOR US

Concerning the Holy Spirit’s activity in helping us pray, three observations are important:

  1. As children of God, we have two main intercessors (mediators – ones who plead a case for others or take responsibility for others’ needs and situations): Christ intercedes for us in heaven (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25; 1 John 2:1), and the Holy Spirit intercedes from within us on earth.
  2. “With groans” probably indicates that the Spirit communicates with God the Father through our desperate inner cries and the longings of our hearts when we do not have words adequate to express our needs and desires to God.
  3. The desires of our hearts must come from the Holy spirit, who lives within us. He appeals to the Father for our needs “in accordance with God’s will” (Romans 8:27). When His desires become our desires, our prayers will be effective.

I AM THE TRUE VINE / JOHN 15:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

(KJV) John 15:1
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

I AM THE TRUE VINE / JOHN 15:1

The vine is frequently used in the Old Testament as a symbol of Israel (Psalms 80:8-16; Isaiah 5:1-7: Jeremiah 2:21), but it was often shown as inadequate or lacking in some way. But in this word picture, Jesus describes Himself as “the true vine” and those who have become His followers as “the branches.” By remaining attached to Him as the source of life, they produce fruit. To produce spiritual fruit means to develop godly character (Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 5:9; Philippians 1:11), set a godly example (Matthew 3:8; 7:16-20), do effective service and lead others to Christ. God is the gardener who takes care of the branches in order that they may be fruitful (John 14:2, 8). God expects all of us to grow and produce spiritual fruit (Matthew 3:8).

DO NOT PUT OUT THE SPIRIT’S FIRE / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:19-20

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 5:19-20
Quench not the Spirit.
20 Despise not prophesyings.

DO NOT PUT OUT THE SPIRIT’S FIRE / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:19-20

  1. Paul equates despising and rejecting the expressions of the Holy Spirit in the church with putting out the Spirit’s fire. Paul encourages the believers to let the Spirit operate through people by His spiritual gifts (God-given abilities and empowerments to benefit the church), such as the gift of prophecy. This special gift enables a Christian to deliver a message or revelation directly from God under the impulse and prompting of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 14:24-25, 29-31). For any of God’s people, to repress or reject the orderly use of prophecy or other spiritual gifts can result in the loss of the Holy Spirit’s activity among a group of believers (1 Corinthians 12:7-10, 28-30).
  2. These two verses clearly teach us that churches in the first century commonly experienced spiritual gifts in public worship (Hebrews 2:4). Notice that although prophetic messages were not to be automatically rejected as unacceptable, they were to be evaluated carefully and supervised properly by the standard of God’s Word before the were received as a genuine message from God (1 Thessalonians 5:21; 1 Corinthians 14:29).
