(KJV) Exodus 17:11

And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

MOSES HELD UP HIS HANDS / EXODUS 17:11

By holding his hands up to the Lord, Moses shows his dependence on God.

  1. Israel’s strength and victory depended on their faith in God. They showed this by prayer and obedience. In this situation, when Moses stopped praying, God’s power stopped flowing (Hebrews 7:25).
  2. This principle also applies under the new covenant (God’s plan of spiritual salvation and a renewed relationship with people through the life and sacrifice of His Son, Jesus). If we fail to pray and depend on God, we will eventually lose His protection, blessing and favor. Our only hope of victory comes from relying on God. We should embrace the privilege we have to “approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy.” Along with mercy, we can “find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:16; 7:25; Matthew 7:7-8).

JOSHUA / EXODUS 17:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 17:9

And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

JOSHUA / EXODUS 17:9

This is the first Biblical reference to the man chosen to succeed Moses as Israel’s leader. “Joshua” means “the LORD saves,” or “Yahweh is Savior.” The Greek form of the name is “Jesus” (Matthew 1:21). It is appropriate that the man who would later conquer Canaan appears first in a military role. God was preparing him for his future wars against the Canaanites as he led Israel in taking possession of the promised land.

STRIKE THE ROCK / EXODUS 17:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 17:6

Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

STRIKE THE ROCK / EXODUS 17:6

In the New Testament, this rock is identified with Jesus Christ, the “spiritual rock” (1 Corinthians 10:4). He is the true source of living water (John 4:10-13; 7:37-38). Just like the rock was struck, Christ was struck by death on the cross (Isaiah 53:5). Christ was actually the source of Israel’s blessings and provision. That same Christ Jesus is the source of blessing and the giver of the Holy Spirit for the church of believers today (Psalms 105:41-42; Isaiah 53:4-5; John 20:22; Acts 2:1-4).

PERFECT / COLOSSIANS 1:28

 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

PERFECT / COLOSSIANS 1:28

The word translated “perfect” (Greek teleion) means “whole, complete, mature.” This word does not refer to moral or ethical perfection or flawless behavior. It points to a mature relationship with God that loves Him fully and strives to fulfill His purposes through a lifestyle of complete devotion to Him and love for others. Such a lifestyle will fulfill the requirements of Christ’s commands (Matthew 22:39; Mark 12:30).

To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Christ’s living in us by His Holy Spirit is our assurance of future glory and eternal life (Ephesians 1:13-14; 4:30). Only Christ’s inner presence and our ongoing intimate companionship and interaction with Him can remove any doubt about being with Him forever in heaven (Romans 8:11). To have Christ is to have life (John 17:3; 1 John 5:11-12).

THE MYSTERY THAT HAS BEEN KEPT HIDDEN / COLOSSIANS 1:25-26

(KJV) Colossians 1:25-26

Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; 26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:

THE MYSTERY THAT HAS BEEN KEPT HIDDEN / COLOSSIANS 1:25-26

“Mystery” was a popular conceit in certain pagan religions with which some of the Colossians may have been familiar. It was secret information available only to a particular group of people. Paul drastically changes the meaning of the term by combining it with terms like “disclosed” (here), “made known” (Ephesians 1:9), “make plain” (Ephesians 3:9) and “revelation” (Romans 16:25). True Christianity is not about secret knowledge for only a few. God does not hide His plan from anyone who is sincerely searching. Instead, God has openly revealed and proclaimed His truth (Ephesians 1:9; 3:4).

SUFFERED FOR YOU / COLOSSIANS 1:24

(KJV) Colossians 1:24

Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church:

SUFFERED FOR YOU / COLOSSIANS 1:24

This verse does not suggest that Christ’s sacrifice for our sins was incomplete in any way, but that Paul continued to suffer for preaching the message about Christ. Paul views Christ as still suffering, not to pay for our sins, but in relationship with His people as they continue to serve His purposes, many times through great difficulty. Christ suffered on the cross to pay the complete penalty for our offenses against God, and Paul endured the added sufferings necessary to carry Christ’s message to a spiritually lost world that is hostile to God (Acts 9:4). Paul rejoices because he is allowed to share in Christ’s sufferings (Philippians 3:10; 2 Corinthians 1:4-5; 4:7; 11:23).

IF YOU CONTINUE IN YOUR FAITH / COLOSSIANS 1:23

If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

IF YOU CONTINUE IN YOUR FAITH / COLOSSIANS 1:23

Notice the ongoing human response of faith that Paul says is necessary for Christians to appear finally before Christ as “holy in His sight, without blemish and free from accusation” (Colossians 1:22). We must

  1. “Contine in our faith,” actively yielding our lives to Christ, obeying His Word and surrendering to His authority and purposes in all we do.
  2. Be “established and firm” in the message and teaching of Jesus and those He commissioned to deliver His original message as we have it in His Word, the Bible.
  3. Be “not moved from the hope held out in the gospel,” which means that we must not return to our former life of sin, hopelessness and spiritual destruction apart from Christ (Colossians 3:5-11; Hebrews 10:38).

RECONCILE TO HIMSELF ALL THINGS / COLOSSIANS 1:20

(KJV) Colossians 1:20

And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

RECONCILE TO HIMSELF ALL THINGS / COLOSSIANS 1:20

In a Biblical sense, “to be reconciled” means to be restored to a right relationship with God. However, this passage does not mean that Christ has automatically saved all people. Everyone still must choose for themselves whether to accept or reject that relationship. Those who reject Christ remain enemies of God (Romans 2:4-10) and are headed for eternity in hell. Only those who accept Christ’s forgiveness and yield their lives to Him are reconciled to God and saved. When the first humans sinned, not only was the spiritual harmony between God and people destroyed but also disorder and corruption came into all creation (Romans 8:9-22). When Christ died on the cross for our sins, He made peace possible between God and humanity, restoring people’s opportunity for a personal relationship with God through faith in Christ (Colossians 1:22; 2 Corinthians 5:18; 1 Peter 3:18). In the process, Christ also restored the harmony (potentially) of the physical world and everything in the universe (Colossians 1:16-18), though the full restoration will occur only after Christ returns to earth at the end of history (Romans 8:21; Revelation 20-21).

Paul describes the deity of Christ (the fact that He is fully God) in the simplest of terms. The totality and completeness of God, with all His powers and characteristics, dwell within Christ (Colossians 2:9; Hebrews 1:8).
