Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

WRITTEN CODE WITH ITS REGULATIONS / COLOSSIANS 2:14

This refers to the Law of Moses (the law God gave Israel through the prophet/leader Moses), which included a moral code of commandment that set standard for right conduct but could not give life and the power to obey God (Galatians 3:21). In effect, the commandments simply exposed our offenses against God and our human inability to live up to God’s perfect standard (Romans 7:7). The old covenant as a way of maintaining a relationship with God (through keeping commands and making sacrifices) has been nailed to the cross because Christ fulfilled the law perfectly and became the perfect sacrifice once and for all. In the process, God established a better covenant through Christ’s life and by the power of His Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:6-9; Hebrews 8:6-13; 10:16-17, 29; 12:24). That is to say, God canceled the law’s accusations against those who respond to Christ in faith, accept His forgiveness and entrust their lives to Him. This does not mean that God’s laws and commands are obsolete (Romans 7:12, 16; 1 Timothy 1:8). They still expose sin and point people to their need for Christ. In addition, God’s law and His standards of moral conduct are still valid for Christ’s followers. The difference is that now Christians have the power – through the Holy Spirit – to meet “the righteous requirements of the law” (Romans 8:4) – not to gain salvation or favor with God, but to show their love and gratitude to Him.

CIRCUMCISION DONE BY CHRIST / COLOSSIANS 2:11-12

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Colossians 2:11-12

In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: 12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

CIRCUMCISION DONE BY CHRIST / COLOSSIANS 2:11-12

Physical circumcision involves cutting away the foreskin from the penis. In the Old Testament, this act served as the sign that an individual Israelite was in a covenant relationship with God, based on God’s laws and promises to His people and on the people’s faithfulness and obedience to God (Genesis 17:11). It symbolized a cutting away, or separation, from wickedness, ungodliness and all that was unholy in the world. The believer under the new covenant (God’s plan of salvation and a renewed relationship with people through the life and sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ) has experienced a spiritual circumcision, symbolizing their “putting off of the sinful nature.” Such circumcision is a spiritual act by which Christ cuts away our old nature of rebellion against God and gives us a renewed spiritual life characterized by the same life-transforming power that raised Jeus from the dead (Colossians 2:12-13). This is a circumcision of the heart (Deuteronomy 10:16; 30:6; Jeremiah 4:4; 9:26; Romans 2:29).

DECEPTIVE PHILOSOPHY … RATHER THAN ON CHRIST / COLOSSIANS 2:8

(KJV) Colossians 2:8

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

DECEPTIVE PHILOSOPHY … RATHER THAN ON CHRIST / COLOSSIANS 2:8

Paul warns us to be on guard against all philosophies, religions and traditions that emphasize humans functioning independently from God and His written revelation, as found in the Bible. Today, one of the greatest philosophical threats to true Bible-based Christianity is “secular humanism.” (Humanism is a thought system based on the values, characteristics and behaviors that are believed to be best in human beings rather than any supernatural authority.) This has become the underlying philosophy (idea, worldview, belief, value system, way of life) and the accepted religion in most of secular (worldly, non-spiritual) education, government and society in general. It is also the established viewpoint of most of the news and entertainment media throughout the world.

  1. What does a philosophy of humanism teach? (a) It teaches that humanity, the universe and all that exists consist only of matter and energy shaped into their present form by natural physical forces and impersonal chance. (b) It teaches that humans have not been created by a personal God but are the product of a random process of evolution (the theoretical process that proposes how all species develop from earlier and less complex forms of life as a result of changes in genetic material). (c) It rejects belief in a personal, all-powerful and infinite God (without beginning or end) and denies that the Bible is God’s inspired revelation to the human race. (d) It claims that knowledge does not exist apart from human discovery and that human reason determines correct ethics (“moral” principles, values, standards) of society. This makes human beings the highest authority. (e) It seeks to modify or improve human behavior through education, economic policies, organization, redistribution of resources, modern psychology or human wisdom. (f) It teaches that moral standards are not absolute (true and valid for all people, in all situations for all time) but instead are relative (dependent on the person’s own beliefs and circumstances). Standards of behavior are determined by what makes people happy, brings them pleasure or seems good for society according to the goals set by its leaders. As a result, Biblical values and morality (standards of right and wrong, truth and falsehood) are rejected. (g) It considers human self-fulfillment, satisfaction and pleasure to be the highest good in life. (h) It maintains that people should learn to cope with death and the difficulties in life without belief in or dependence on God.
  2. The philosophy of humanism began with Satan and is an expression of Satan’s lie that humans can be like God (Genesis 3). The Bible identifies humanists as those who have “exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator” (Romans 1:25).
  3. Chrisian leaders, pastors and parents must do their absolute best to protect their sons, daughters and others under their care from humanist doctrine. In doing so, they must expose the errors of humanism and instill in their children a godly contempt (hatred, disgust) for its destructive influence. At the same time, they must instruct their children clearly in the truth of God’s revelation as sound in the Bible (Romans 1:20-32; 2 Corinthians 10:4-5; 2 Timothy 3:10-10; Jude 1:4-20; 1 Corinthians 1:20; 2 Peter 2:19).

SHE GIVES BIRTH PREMATURELY / EXODUS 21:22-25

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 21:22-25

If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23 And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, 24 Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

SHE GIVES BIRTH PREMATURELY / EXODUS 21:22-25

God’s laws protecting life included the  protection of unborn children. 

  1. Exodus 21:22 refers to a woman giving birth prematurely (before the baby is fully developed and ready to be born) because of violence done to her. The one causing harm had to pay a heavy penalty.
  2. If the mother or child was seriously injured, then the “law of retaliation” applies. The offender (the one causing the harm) had to pay or suffer in the same way that he or she had caused another to suffer. If the mother or child died, then the accused one was guilty of murder. The penalty was to give his or her life (Exodus 21:23). In such a case, the unborn child is viewed as a human being and the death of the fetus, or unborn child, is considered murder. 
  3. This is the only situation in the law were causing someone’s death by accident (manslaughter) calls for the death of the offender (Deuteronomy 19:4-10). The principle is clear: God seeks to protect and defend those who are least able to protect themselves (the unborn).

SURELY BE PUT TO DEATH / EXODUS 21:12-17

(KJV) Exodus 21:12-17

He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death. 13 And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee. 14 But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die. 15 And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death. 16 And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death. 17 And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.

SURELY BE PUT TO DEATH / EXODUS 21:12-17

These verses list four crimes which required a person to be put to death: pre-planned murder (Exodus 21:12, 14), physically harming one’s parents (Exodus 21:15), kidnapping (Exodus 21:16) and cursing one’s parents with one’s word or in one’s attitude (Exodus 21:17). This severe punishment shows the importance God put on proper interpersonal (relating to interactions with another) and family relationships.

If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.

A HEBREW SERVANT / EXODUS 21:2

God did not immediately stop Israel from the practice of such evils as slavery and polygamy (having more than one spouse). However, He did give regulations that would show respect and grace to those affected in an unfavorable way by these evils (Leviticus 25:39-40; Deuteronomy 15:12-18). These practices were not God’s intention, but He tolerated or allowed them for a time because of how slow and resistant people were in understanding and seeing the good of God’s principles and guidelines (Matthew 19:8; Genesis 29:28). God’s law concerning slavery allowed for far more gracious treatment than the customs of surrounding nations. In the New Testament, however, God expressed a higher standard for relationships between individuals (John 13:34; Colossians 3:22).

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 13:1

How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?

WILL YOU FORGET ME FOREVER? / PSALMS 13:1

The psalm writer is depressed, discouraged and in desperate trouble. God seems far away and unwilling to help. But the people of God should keep in mind two important lessons:

  1. The prayers of godly people may not be answered quickly, but God does hear their prayers. This feeling of being abandoned by God may occur in times of sickness, financial need or severe problems involving family, work, school or church. At such times, we should pray for the Holy Spirit to give us peace and patience. The Bible teaches us that we still have reason to rejoice in the fact that we are spiritually saved and have a personal relationship with God (Psalms 13:5-6) – one that is not based on feelings or circumstances. 
  2. If we are depending on God through faith in Jesus Christ, then God’s delay does not mean that He has abandoned us. He may instead be planning to accomplish some unknown purpose in our lives (2 Corinthians 12:7-10; Hebrews 12:10-11; James 1:2; James 1:4; 1 Peter 1:6-7).

The sights and sounds at Mount Sinai made the Israelites so afraid that they backed off to the opposite side of the valley. Moses told them not to push away in fear. God was displaying His power to inspire in them a godly fear and reverence that would help keep them from rebelling against Him.
