GOD WHO SET ME APART / GALATIANS 1:15

(KJV) Galatians 1:15-16

But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace, 16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:

GOD WHO SET ME APART / GALATIANS 1:15

Paul was primarily referring to his ministry as an apostle (“one sent” with a direct commission from Christ to deliver His original message and to lead the effort of establishing His New Testament church). Yet, there is also a sense in which each believer has been set apart by God so that, through him or her, God may accomplish His purpose to spread the message and reflect the character of His Son, Jesus Christ. As Christians, we have been saved and separated from sin and evil (Galatians 1:4) so that we might experience a close personal relationship with God and effectively communicate to others the message of hope and life through Christ. To be set apart means to be reserved for God and His purposes. It involves being with God and for God. Spiritual separation means living in faith and obedience for God’s honor and for the purpose of revealing His Son to the world.

OR AM I TRYING TO PLEASE MEN? / GALATIANS 1:10

START YOUR DAIL RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Galatians 1:10

For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

OR AM I TRYING TO PLEASE MEN? / GALATIANS 1:10

People cannot effectively spread Christ’s message or influence others to follow Him if they are more concerned about what people think than what God desires. Such people show that their identification with Christ and His message is a shame to them; therefore, they compromise His truth (1 Corinthians 4:3-6). Paul was boldly determined to follow what He considered his duty to speak “not” trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts (1 Thessalonians 2:4). All true Christians must make it their aim to please God and fulfill His plans and desires for them, even if it means displeasing some people (Acts 5:29; Ephesians 6:6; Colossians 3:22). After all, no one has ever loved us and provided the hope for us that Jesus has (John 5:13; Romans 5:8).

LET HIM BE ETERNALLY CONDEMNED! / GALATIANS 1:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Galatians 1:9

As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

LET HIM BE ETERNALLY CONDEMNED! / GALATIANS 1:9

The words “eternally condemned” (Greek anathema) mean that one has come under God’s curse, is doomed to destruction and will receive God’s judgment, eternal punishment and permanent separation from God.

  1. Paul expresses the Holy Spirit’s inspired attitude of justified anger and judgment toward those who try to twist the truth of the original gospel of Christ (Galatians 1:7) and change the truth revealed in God’s Word. This same attitude was evident in Jesus Christ (Matthew 23:13), Peter (2 Peter 2), John (2 John 1:7-11) and Jude (Jude 1:3; Jude 1:4; Jude 1:12; Jude 1:14; Jude 1:15; Jude 1:19) and will be found in the heart of every believer who loves and defends the truth of Christ as revealed in God’s Word. That is because God’s faithful people are convinced that the message of Christ is the Good News of salvation, without which there is no hope for a world that is spiritually lost and separated from God by their own sinful and rebellious way (Romans 1:16; 10:14-15).
  2. Those who are condemned include all who reach a gospel contrary to the message Paul preached as revealed to him by Christ (Galatians 1:11-12; Galatians 1:6). Anyone adding to or taking away from the original and foundational message of Christ and the apostles (those personally commissioned by Jesus to establish His message in the early church) stands under God’s curse: “God will take away from him his share in the tree of life” (Revelation 22:18-19).
  3. God commands all Christians to defend the faith (Jude 1:3), to have a loving attitude when confronting others (2 Timothy 2:25-26) and to separate themselves from teachers, ministers and others in the church who deny the foundational truths taught by Jesus and the apostles (Galatians 1:8-9; Romans 16:17-18; 2 Corinthians 6:17; Acts 14:4). These truths include:
  1. The deity of Christ (the fact that Jesus is fully God) and His virgin birth (Matthew 1:23; John 20:28)
  2. The full inspiration and absolute authority of God’s Word in all that it teaches.
  3. The historical fact of the “fall” of Adam (humankind’s original disobedience toward God, which ruined their perfect relationship with God and introduced the corruption of sin into human existence, Romans 5:12; Romans 5:14; Roman 5:15; Romans 5:18; Romans 5:19).
  4. The inherent (natural, inborn) corruption of human nature that resulted from the original sin (Genesis 6:5; Genesis 8:21; Romans 1:21-32; Romans 3:10-18; Romans 7:14-21).
  5. Humanity’s spiritually lost and hopeless condition apart from Christ (Acts 4:12; Romans 1:16-32; 10:13-15).
  6. Spiritual salvation (forgiveness and restored personal relationship with God) available because of God’s grace (his unearned favor, mercy). We receive this gift through life-surrendering faith in Christ, who gave His own life to pay the penalty for our sin (Romans 3:24; Romans 3:25; Romans 5:10; 2 Corinthians 5:17).
  7. Christ’s bodily resurrection from the dead (Matthew 28:6; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4).
  8. The historical reality of miracles for God in both the Old Testament and New Testament (1 Corinthians 10:1).
  9. The reality of Satan and demons as spiritual beings (Matthew 4:1; 8:28; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Ephesians 2:2; 6:11-18; 1 Peter 5:8).
  10. The Biblical teaching about hell, the place of eternal punishment and separation from God (Matthew 10:28).
  11. Christ’s literal return to earth (John 14:3; Acts 1:11; 1 Corinthians 1:7; Revelation 19:11).

          4. Similar passages containing warnings against false teachers are found in Romans 16:17; 2 Peter 2:17-22; 2 John 1:9-11; Jude 1:12-13; 2 Corinthians 11:13.

A DIFFERENT GOSPEL / GALATIANS 1:6-7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAYILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Galatians 1:6-7

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

A DIFFERENT GOSPEL / GALATIANS 1:6-7

False teachers had come to the Galatians, trying to persuade them to reject Paul’s teaching and accept “a different gospel.” Their message taught that spiritual salvation and a right relationship with God involved not only believing in Christ but also being integrated into the Jewish faith by being circumcised (Galatians 5:2; Romans 2:29; Philippians 3:2; Colossians 2:11; Acts 15:11), following the law (Galatians 3:5) and observing Jewish holy days (Galatians 4:10).

  1. The Bible clearly affirms that there is only one true message of spiritual salvation: “the gospel of Christ” (Galatians 1:7). It has come to us through the “revelation from Jesus Christ” (Galatians 1:12) and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. This gospel (the “good news” and true message about Jesus) is defined and revealed in the Bible, God’s written Word.
  2. Any teachings, beliefs or ideas originating from persons, churches or traditions and not expressed or implied in God’s Word are not part of the true message and are not to be included in the gospel of Christ (Galatians 1:11). To mix these man-made notions and philosophies with the original message of Jesus is to “pervert the gospel of Christ” (Galatians 1:7).

Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

NOT INHERIT THE KINDOM OF GOD /GALATIANS 5:21

Although Paul maintains that it is impossible to earn a right relationship with God and eternal life in heaven by keeping the law or by following religious routines (Galatians 2:16; 5:4), he does teach that it is possible to shut oneself out of the kingdom by engaging in evil behaviors (1 Corinthians 6:9; Matthew 25:41; Matthew 25:40-46; Ephesians 5:7-11).

RESCUE US FROM THE PRESENT EVIL AGE / GALATIANS 1:3-5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Galatians 1:3-5

Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, 4Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: 5To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

RESCUE US FROM THE PRESENT EVIL AGE / GALATIANS 1:3-5

This verse is probably an early confession of faith that was well known throughout the New Testament churches. It connects Christ’s death with the forgiveness of sins – our own acts of rebellion and offenses against God – and with spiritual rescue from “the present evil age.” At the center of Christ’s sacrifice – to restore people to a right relationship with God – is the goal to set people free from the evil that dominates the societies of this world. The first gospel message (the “good news” of forgiveness and new life now available because of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ) preached after the Holy Spirit came to fill and empower Christ’s followers of the day of Pentecost included the words: “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation” (Acts 2:40). Christians must live to honor God and to serve His purposes. This includes refusing to be guided by the popular values, wisdom, opinions, corrupt desires, and selfish pleasures of those in the world who do not follow Christ (Romans 12:2; Titus 2:14).

THE SPIRIT … THE SINFUL NATURE / GALATIANS 5:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

(KJV) Galatians 5:17-18
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

THE SPIRIT … THE SINFUL NATURE / GALATIANS 5:17

The spiritual conflict within believers involves the whole person – mind, body, and spirit. The struggle is whether they will give in to their own sinful desires and yield to sin’s control, or whether they will surrender to the spirit’s demands and continue under Christ’s authority and control (Galatians 5:16; Romans 8:4-14). The battlefield is within each Christian, and the conflict will continue throughout their earthly lives if they are to reign with Christ in the future (Romans 7:7-25; 2 Timothy 2:12; Revelation 12:11; Ephesians 6:11). However, by relying on the power of the Holy Spirit and by following His guidance, a Christian will overcome his or her own ungodly desires and win the battle over the sinful nature (Galatians 5:16).
