CLAIM WE HAVE NOT SINNED / 1 JOHN 1:10

(KJV) 1 John 1:10

If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

CLAIM WE HAVE NOT SINNED / 1 JOHN 1:10

If we claim that we have never sinned and, therefore, do not need to accept the forgiveness provided by God through Christ’s death, we are making God appear to be a liar (Romans 3:23). The false teachers that John is refuting claimed that their immoral actions were not sinful (Romans 6:2).

CONFESS OUR SINS / 1 JOHN 1:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

CONFESS OUR SINS / 1 JOHN 1:9

God is more than willing to forgive us for the ways we have offended Him and defied His standards. After all, that is why He sent His Son, Jesus, to die in our place and pay the penalty for our sin. But in order to receive His forgiveness, we must willingly admit that we have gone our own way and defied God. We must then submit to Jesus’ authority and allow him to purify our lives spiritually. God’s response to such humility and surrender is consistent with His faithful character (Psalms 143:1) and forgiving nature (Jeremiah 31:34; Hebrews 10:22-23).

  1. By providing complete forgiveness and restoring us to a right relationship with Himself.
  2. By purifying us from the guilt and destruction of sin. God does this so we can relate to Him in holiness (moral purity, spiritual wholeness, separation from evil and dedication to God; Psalms 32:1-5; Proverbs 28:13; Jeremiah 31:1-5; Luke 15:18; Romans 6:2-14).

WALK IN THE LIGHT / 1 JOHN 1:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 1:7

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

WALK IN THE LIGHT / 1 JOHN 1:7

“Walk in the light” means to believe and accept God’s truth as revealed in His Word and to make an earnest and sustained effort, with His help, to live by God’s truth in words and actions. The expression, “the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin,” refers to the ongoing work of sanctification (spiritual and moral purification, refinement, growth, development, maturity and preparation for God;s purposes) within the lives of those who follow Christ. Through the inner presence of His Holy Spirit, God provides continual cleansing for a believer’s unknown and unintentional sins. John is probably not thinking here of deliberate defiance against God and His standard, since he speaks of walking in the light. This continual purifying allows us to have intimate companionship with God.

FELLOWSHIP WITH HIM / 1 JOHN 1:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 1:6

If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

FELLOWSHIP WITH HIM / 1 JOHN 1:6

To “walk in the darkness” means to live outside of God’s truth and a personal relationship with Him. It means to reject God’s standards and pursue one’s own direction toward selfish and immoral pleasure. People who live this way do not “have fellowship with Him,” and are “not born of God” (1 John 3:7-9; John 3:19; 2 Corinthians 6:14). Their actions show that they do not have a saving relationship with God. But those who have accepted God’s forgiveness and the opportunity to have true companionship with Christ experience His favor, help and strength to live in spiritual purity and to do what is right by God’s standard (1 John 1:7; 2:4; 3:10).

FELLOWSHIP WITH US / 1 JOHN 1:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 1:3

That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

FELLOWSHIP WITH US / 1 JOHN 1:3

“Fellowship” (Greek koinonia) literally means “having in common” and involves sharing and participation with other believers. Christians have fellowship because they have many things in common, including their faith (Titus 1:4; Jude 1:3), God’s grace – His unearned favor, love and help – through Christ (1 Corinthians 1:9; Philippians 1:7), The Holy Spirit living within them (John 20:22; Romans 8:9, 11) and the gifts of the Spirit (Romans 15:27). All Christians are also in a spiritual battle with the same enemy (1 John 2:15-18; 1 Peter 5:8). Christ’s followers can have no true God-honoring fellowship with those who reject the teaching of New Testament faith (2 John 1:7-11; Galatians 1:9).

ETERNAL LIFE / 1 JOHN 1:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 1:2

(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)

ETERNAL LIFE / 1 JOHN 1:2

John defines eternal life in terms of Christ Himself. In his Gospel account, John says, “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (John 17:3). This means that eternal life is not only a future hope but also a present reality that we can begin to experience from the time we enter a personal relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. True life can only be found through obedient faith in Jesus Christ and a vital personal relationship with Him (1 John 1:2, 6-7; 2:22-25; 5:20).

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 1:1

 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

THAT WHICH WAS FROM THE BEGINNING – SEEN WITH OUR EYS OUR HAND HAVE TOUCHED / 1 JOHN 1:1

THAT WHICH WAS FROM THE BEGINNING

John introduces this letter (1 John 1:1-4) in a way that is similar to the introduction of his Gospel (his narrative account of Jesus’ life; John 1:1-2).

SEEN WITH OUR EYES … OUR HANDS HAVE TOUCHED

John begins the letter with the witness of his personal knowledge of Jesus. He can confirm the fact that the One who existed from eternity “became flesh” (a real flesh-and-blood man, John 1:14). He was true God and true man (Hebrews 2:14). This testimony directly contradicts a false teaching that was circulated, which denied that Jesus is the Christ (the promised Savior from God) and that Christ truly existed in physical form. This false teaching was an early form of Gnosticism, which taught that “spirit” (the spirit realm) is basically good, while “matter” (the physical world) is basically evil. This led to the belief that salvation was achieved through escape from the body, which came not by faith in Christ, but by special knowledge (the Greek word for “knowledge” is gnosis). This incorrect belief caused some people to reject Jesus’ true humanity (1 John 2:22-23; 4:3) and led to other strange ideas, such as the thought that Jesus only appeared to have a physical body rather than actually having a physical body. John directly refutes these ideas by clearly describing Jesus as the Son of God in physical human form (1 John 1:1; 2:22; 4:2-3).

UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE EVIL ONE / 1 JOHN 5:19

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 5:19

And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE EVIL ONE / 1 JOHN 5:19

We will never adequately understand the New Testament unless we recognize its underlying conviction that Satan is the god of this corrupt world system. He is the evil one, and his power controls the present evil age (Luke 13:16; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Galatians 1:4; Ephesians 6:12; Hebrews 2:14; Matthew 4:10).

  1. God’s Word does not teach that God is now in direct control of the ungodly world that involves sinful people, evil, cruelty, and injustice. In no way does God desire or cause all the suffering in the world, nor is everything that happens part of His perfect desires and purposes (Matthew 23:37; Luke 13:34; Luke 19:41-44; Luke 19:41; Luke 19:43). The bible teaches that at this present time, the world is in willful rebellion against God and His rule; therefore, it has come under Satan’s dominion and is a slave to sin and evil. These ungodly conditions affect all people on earth- those who follow God and those who do not. Because of this condition, Christ came to die (John 3:16), to pay the ultimate penalty for sin and to reconcile the world to God (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). We have the responsibility to battle sin and evil.
  2. However, there is a sense in which God is in control of the ungodly world. Gid is sovereign (with supreme power and authority to do as He chooses), which means that all things happen only as He allows. At times, God may directly intervene to accomplish His purposes, but this does not mean that He overrides the free will He has given all people or the consequences that human choices bring on the world. For now, God has chosen to limit His supreme power and rule over the world. Yet this self-limitation is only temporary, because at the time determined by His wisdom, God will destroy Satan and all evil and judge the wicked (Revelation 19-20).

Only then will “the kingdom of the world become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign for ever and ever (Revelation 11:15).

SIN THAT DOES NOT LEAD TO DEATH / 1 JOHN 5:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 5:17

All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

SIN THAT DOES NOT LEAD TO DEATH / 1 JOHN 5:17

John distinguishes between two types of sins:

  1. Less serious sins that do not immediately lead to spiritual death (separation for relationship with God); and
  2. sins so terrible that they indicate a purposeful rebellion against God and His Word, which lead to spiritual death and separation from the life of God (John 3:15; Numbers 15:31; Romans 8:13; Galatians 5:4). Such deadly sin includes the false teaching that John combats in much of this letter – teaching that denied that Jesus was the Christ (the Messiah and Savior 1 John 2:22) and that He was God in literal human form (1 John 4:2). These defiant beliefs led people to throw off all moral restraint and to behave with shameless disregard for God’s commands and standards (1 John 2:3-5, 15-17; 3:3-10; 5:2-3, 18; 1 John 5:2; 1 John 5:3). Such open defiance toward God and refusal to change lead to ultimate spiritual death – eternal separation for God.

HE SHOULD PRAY AND GOD WILL GIVE HIM LIFE; 1 JOHN 5:16

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 5:16

If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

HE SHOULD PRAY AND GOD WILL GIVE HIM LIFE; 1 JOHN 5:16

John refers to a type of prayer that is definitely in line with God’s desires and purposes (1 John 5:14), so we can be sure that He will answer (1 John 5:14-15). It is prayer for spiritually weak believers who need God’s grace (His undeserved favor, love, help and spiritual ability) and encouragement in their lives. The guiding conditions for such a prayer are as follows:

  1. The person needing prayer must be a brother or siter (a believer who is still in a personal relationship with Christ) who has not deliberately defied God, rejected His truth or abandoned his or her relationship with God (1 John 5:17). That is to say, the person has not sinned in a way that has brough spiritual death and separation from God (Romans 8:13), like the false teachers of John’s Day who totally rejected the truth that Jesus came and died for sin (1 John 4:2). Since the believer has not committed such sin, he or she still has spiritual life but is weak and struggling. The person is willing to admit those struggles, turn from his or her own way and submit to God, yet still needs help in conquering the power of Satan and sin.
  2. For struggling believers in this situation, the church must pray that God will give them “life,” which means a renewal of spiritual strength and God’s grace which is being threatened by sin (Romans 8:6; 2 Corinthians 3:6; 1 Peter 3:7). God promises to answer that prayer and give His grace, though the person must still personally respond to God and accept His help.
  3. For a former believer who has committed a sin “that leads to death” (spiritual death and separation from God), the church cannot pray with absolute assurance that God will give more grace. This type of sin involves deliberately defying God and His truth and refusing to obey Him. Such a person is dead spiritually and can only be restored to life spiritually and can only be restored to life spiritually if he or she sincerely repents (Matthew 3:2) and turns back to God (Romans 8:13). We must pray that God will direct the circumstances of the person’s life in such a way that he or she comes to the end of their will to resist God, turn back to Him and is restored once more to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.
