NULLIFY THE THINGS THAT ARE / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:28-29

Through Jesus’ humiliating execution and triumphant resurrection (1 Corinthians 1:18; 1 Corinthians 1:23) and through using the most lowly and unlikely people and things to serve His highest purposes (1 Corinthians 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 127), God proves that the world’s most valued things are useless. God is now in the process of bringing human philosophies, psychologies and all other worldly systems and ways of thinking to and end

But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

GOD CHOSE THE FOOLISH THINGS / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:27

In 1 Corinthians 1:25-29, Paul explains that God’s standards and values are very different from those accepted by the world. God is now in the process of exposing and overthrowing the world’s false standards and wisdom. In doing so, He does not need the wisest and most influential people to serve His purposes (1 Corinthians 1:26). He chooses to use those who humble themselves, accept Christ and submit their lives to Him.

THE FOOLISHNESS OF WHAT WAS PREACHED / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:21

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 1:21

For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

THE FOOLISHNESS OF WHAT WAS PREACHED / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:21

It is not the method of preaching that is considered foolish, but rather the message of the power and authority of Christ, who was crucified (executed on a cross) and then rose from the dead. On many levels, God’s plan and message do not make sense to the human way of thinking. For that reason, most people reject the message. In Paul’s time, the Jews rejected the message (1 Corinthians 1:23) because they expected a political leader and Messiah (Savior, Christ, Acts 1:6), not a crucified one. The Greeks and Romans rejected the message because they assumed that no honorable person would be crucified, so they could not understand how one who had died as a criminal could be the Savior (Matthew 27:35).

THE WISDOM OF THE WORLD / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:20

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 1:20

Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

THE WISDOM OF THE WORLD / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:20

Worldly wisdom excludes God because it emphasizes self-sufficiency and makes human knowledge the highest authority. It refuses to accept God’s revelation in Jesus Christ.

  1. God calls this wisdom foolishness (1 Corinthians 3:19-20) because it has kept humans from finding and believing the truth so that they may come to know their Creator (1 Corinthians 1:21).
  2. A Christian’s worldview must be firmly based on God’s Word and its message of Christ, which will show the secular worldview as a rejection of God and His truth (1 Corinthians 1:18-31; 2:1-16; Acts 17:18; Romans 1:20-32; Colossians 2:8; 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12; 2 Timothy 3:1-9; 2 Peter 2:1-3,7; Jude 1:4-9). The original and true message of “the cross of Christ” (1 Corinthians 1:17; 1 Corinthians 1:18) must never be compromised or twisted to accommodate worldly philosophy, science or any other wisdom that man proclaims as great (1 Corinthians 2:4-5; Galatians 6:14).

IT IS THE POWER OF GOD / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:18

IT IS THE POWER OF GOD

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 1:18

For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

IT IS THE POWER OF GOD / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:18

The message of the cross proclaims how Christ gave His life to pay the penalty for our sin. It tells of Jesus’ sacrifice for us, celebrates the life provided by that sacrifice and requires people to make a personal choice about how they will respond to Christ’s sacrifice. This message not only involves wisdom and truth, but also God’s active power to bring spiritual salvation, healing, freedom from demons and rescue from sin’s power.

CHRIST DID NOT SEND ME TO BAPTIZE / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 1:17

For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

CHRIST DID NOT SEND ME TO BAPTIZE / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:17

Paul is not saying that Jesus’ teaching about baptism was unimportant (Matthew 28:19). Instead, he is pointing out that he, like Christ (John 4:1-2) and Peter (Acts 10:47-48), had instructed his associates to perform the baptisms of believers. Paul did not want to provide an opportunity for those he had led to Christ to think in any way that they were “baptized into the name of Paul” (1 Corinthians 1:13; Acts 22:16; Romans 6:4).

I FOLLOW PAUL … APOLLOS … CEPHAS … I FOLLOW CHRIST / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:12

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 1:12

Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.

I FOLLOW PAUL … APOLLOS … CEPHAS … I FOLLOW CHRIST / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:12

I FOLLOW PAUL … APOLLOS … CEPHAS

Division over leaders in the church was beginning to develop. Some church members were becoming more attached to certain ministers than to Christ’s message itself. Paul condemns this attitude, reminding them that neither he nor any of the other leaders had given their lives for the church; only Christ had given Himself, and He was the rightful head. Churches and individual Christians today have the same misguided pull toward a certain pastor, evangelist, teacher or some other ministry personality rather than to Christ and His Word. This attitude can cause them to betray Christian principles, and it continues to cause a division in the church. We must always be careful to center our love and loyalty on God and His Word, no on any of His messengers.

I FOLLOW CHRIST

The ones who proudly claimed loyalty to Jesus probably consisted of those who felt they possessed superior wisdom, revelation and spirituality that came directly form Christ. This group probably believed that God’s grace and their knowledge (1 Corinthians 8:1) brought freedom from the restraints of God’s law (1 Corinthians 6:12; 10:23) and from the demands of any moral code or set of standards (1 Corinthians 5:2). Those who taught this twisted message were attempting to win the church over to their way of thinking (2 Corinthians 11:4, 20-21). People who held or followed such misguided views probably had a prideful and independent spirit that made it difficult for them to submit to leaders with true authority, such as Paul (1 Corinthians 4:18-19).

YOU DO NOT LACK ANY SPIRITUAL GIFT – WAIT FOR OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST TO BE REVEALED / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:7

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 1:7

So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:

YOU DO NOT LACK ANY SPIRITUAL GIFT – WAIT FOR OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST TO BE REVEALED / 1 CORINTHIANS 1:7

YOU DO NOT LACK ANY SPIRITUAL GIFT

Paul expresses gratitude and praise to the Corinthian church because God, in His grace (undeserved favor, love, enablement, 1 Corinthians 1:4), has given them specific spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12-14). These gifts are special abilities given through the Holy Spirit that allow individuals to serve the needs of the church in a way that honors God and benefits those within the congregation. God is always faithful to place within the devoted church congregation exactly what it needs to fulfill His purposes for the church at any given time. Notice that in all of Paul’s instruction about spiritual gifts addressed in this letter, nowhere does he try to eliminate or discourage the use of these gifts. Instead, he attempts to change the Corinthians’ attitudes toward spiritual gifts so they may use them as God desires.

WAIT FOR OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST TO BE REVEALED

The early Christians lived with great expectation of Christ’s immediate return (Matthew 24:42; John 14:3). They lived in constant anticipation of this great hope. Notice that the Christian’s hope is for the personal return of the Lord Jesus Christ, not for the general events that will occur during the last days (1 Thessalonians 1:9-10; 4:13-17; Titus 2:13; Hebrews 9:28).
