While Martha is often remembered for her shortcoming in Luke 10:40-41, we must recognize that she was a powerful woman of faith in Christ. She was a close friend of Jesus who recognized exactly who He is and trusted completely in His love, power and purpose.

I AM THE RESURRECTION / JOHN 11:25-26

(KJV) John 11:25-26

 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

I AM THE RESURRECTION / JOHN 11:25-26

For people who have entrusted their lives to Jesus, physical death is not a tragic end. It is instead the gateway to eternal life with God. The words “will live” in John 11:25 refer to the resurrection that awaits Christ’s followers. The words “will never die” in John 11:26 mean that although a follower of Christ dies physically, he or she will never experience spiritual death (the “second death,” Revelation 2:11), which involves eternal punishment and separation from God. Instead, Christ’s followers will be resurrected with new bodies, which will be immortal and incorruptible (1 Corinthians 15:42, 54), ones that cannot die or deteriorate (Romans 8:10; 2 Corinthians 4:16).

When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

STAYED WHERE HE WAS TWO MORE DAYS / JOHN 11:6

Jesus delayed going to the family He loved (John 11:5) in order to strengthen the faith of that family and His disciples. At first, it may have seemed that Jesus was unconcerned by their suffering and grief. However, John repeatedly emphasizes that Jesus loved the family and shared their sorrow (John 11:3, 5, 35). Jesus’ timing and purpose was different from what they wanted, but His plan would prove to be for the best of everyone involved. God’s timing and purposes may be difficult for us to understand, particularly when we are going through tough times, but God will always respond according to His unfailing love and divine wisdom.

JESUS LOVED MARTHA AND HER SISTER AND LAZARUS / JOHN 11:5

Here is a family that had a true and strong devotion to Jesus (John 11:2). They enjoyed a close personal relationship with Him (Luke 10:38-42), and He considered them to be very special friends (Luke 11:3-5). Still, they experienced sorrow, sickness and death. Today the same types of trouble touch the lives of faithful Christians as well. Yet Jesus is aware of the pain and will always be there to guide us through the difficult circumstances of life. Churches will have people who are outwardly passionate about their devotion to the Lord (like Mary), faithful in good works and service (like Martha) and those who are suffering and dying (like Lazarus). Families like this, and others in the church, may often wonder why God does not take a certain action; they may even feel that He has forgotten them (Psalms 13:1; Matthew 27:46; Revelation 6:10). But if Jesus seems to delay His healing or relief, it is not for lack of love, mercy or compassion. He is waiting for just the right time to bring the greatest honor to God (John 11:4) and the greatest eternal good for those involved (John 11:15, 23-26, 40-44).

When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

SICKNESS … FOR GOD’S GLORY / JOHN 11:4

Sickness among God’s people will never result in death as the final outcome. Because Christ has already conquered death (1 Corinthians 15:55; 2 Timothy 1:10; Hebrews 2:14; Revelation 1:18), death holds no power over Christ’s followers and can never separate them from Him (John 10:28). In the end, death will be destroyed by the resurrection – of Christ and His followers (John 11:25-26). The final truth is that the spirit of those who have a personal relationship with Christ “will never die” (John 11:26).

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

BORE OUR SINS / 1 PETER 2:24

When Christ suffered and died, He was not just setting an example of love and suffering; He was taking our place and paying our penalty for sin (Isaiah 53:4, 11-12). We deserve death for our defiance against God, but Christ has already paid that penalty, becoming our substitute and taking on Himself the punishment for our sins when He gave His life on the cross (1 Peter 3:18; John 1:29; Hebrews 9:28; 10:10). The purpose of His death for us was “so that we might die to sins” (1 Peter 2:24-25; Romans 6:1-8), which means that we can be free from sin’s guilt and control and unresponsive to its influence (Romans 6:11). By His death, Christ opened the way by which we can return to God and receive a right relationship with Him (Romans 3:24-26). In addition, Christ’s sacrifice provides the grace (the undeserved favor, love and enablement) to obey God and to do what is right by His standard (Romans 6:2-3; 2 Corinthians 5:15; Galatians 2:20). Peter uses the word “healed” in relation to salvation with all its benefits because Christ’s sacrifice was complete, providing relief and restoration spiritually, physically, emotionally and in every way that we need (Isaiah 53:5; Matthew 8:16-17).

CHRIST SUFFERED … FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS / 1 PETER 2:21

For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

CHRIST SUFFERED … FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS / 1 PETER 2:21

Jesus Christ is the highest example of one who suffered evil for doing good. For those who follow His example, their sufferings are actually transformed into opportunities to identify with their Savior. They recognize that the highest honor and privilege of any believer is to suffer for the cause of Christ and to spread His message (Matthew 5:10). In suffering for doing good, Christians follow the example of Christ and the apostles – those He originally sent with His authority to deliver His message and help establish His New Testament church (Isaiah 53; Matthew 16:21; Matthew 20:28; Acts 9:16; Hebrews 5:8). 

  1. Christians must be willing to suffer (1 Peter 4:1; 2 Corinthians 11:23-29), particularly to share in the sufferings of Christ (1 Peter 4:13; 2 Corinthians 1:5; Philippians 3:10). They should expect difficulty and suffering to be a part of their service to God 2 Corinthians 4:10-12; 1 Corinthians 11:1).
  2. Suffering for Christ is called suffering “according to God’s will” (1 Peter 4:19), for His “name” (Acts 9:16), “for the gospel” (2 Timothy 1:8), “for what is right” (1 Peter 3:14) and for “the kingdom of God” (2 Thessalonians 1:5).
  3. Suffering for Christ is a way to develop spiritual maturity (Hebrews 2:10), to obtain God’s blessing (1 Peter 4:14) and to relate to and minister to others (2 Corinthians 4:10-12). Sharing in Christ’s suffering prepares us to share in His glory (Romans 8:17-18). In this sense, suffering for good should be seen as a precious gift from God (1 Peter 2:19; Philippians 1:29). 
  4. In living for Christ and helping to spread His message, we should not look for trouble or purposely pursue the most difficult ways. Yet, we must be willing and prepared to experience and endure suffering, understanding that difficulties come to those who walk in devotion to Christ.

Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

LIVE SUCH GOOD LIVES AMONG THE PAGANS / 1 PETER 2:12

As Christians, our lives should stand out in a positive way from people in the world who do not follow Christ (Philippians 2:15). Our aim is not to be different simply for the sake of being different or to isolate ourselves from the rest of society; rather, our goal is to reflect Christ’s character and shine His light in spiritually dark places (Matthew 5:14-16; Titus 2:8). Most people are still searching for satisfaction and significance in life. If we can reflect God’s uncommon and undeniable peace and purpose, people will take notice. Some will be inspired to consider the claims of Christ for themselves. Others may reject or mistreat us; but sometimes those who give Christians the hardest time are the most serious about finding something that is real and worth living and dying for. As a result, they will put believers to the test to see if what they have is worth holding on to. We must treat such people with special grace and show them that following Christ means more than anything else in life.

Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

ALIENS AND STRANGERS / 1 PETER 2:11

As followers of Christ, our new designation as God’s own possession sets us apart from the corrupt ways of this world. We are part of Christ’s kingdom, which “is not of this world” (John 18:36). We are not identified with, nor do we give in to the deceptive and destructive influences of the surrounding society. For now, we live in a country to which we do not belong; we are simply passing through on the way to “a better country” (Hebrews 11:16). Our true citizenship is with Christ in heaven (Philippians 3:20-21; Hebrews 11:9-16); therefore, we must not conform to the world’s pattern and practices (Romans 12:2).

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;

A HOLY NATION / 1 PETER 2:9

Just as the Israelites were called God’s chosen people in the Old Testament, all followers of Christ today are considered chosen (1 Peter 1:2). All believers collectively are set apart (as a whole group, the “church”) for God and His kingdom purposes (Acts 20:28; Titus 2:14). As “a holy nation,” they are to reflect His glory and to spread His message of salvation in a way that brings honor and praise to Him (Exodus 19:6; Isaiah 42:1).
