THE LORD IS SLOW TO ANGER / NAHUM 1:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Nahum 1:3

The Lord is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the Lord hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

THE LORD IS SLOW TO ANGER / NAHUM 1:3

God is extremely patient because He wants to give sinners time to repent (2 Peter 3:9) – to change their attitude toward Him, admit their sin, turn from their own ways and follow His purposes. However, there is a limit to His kindness and patience. Those who stubbornly continue in their own way will finally face His justified anger and judgment (Romans 11:22).

A JEALOUS AND AVENGING GOD / NAHUM 1:2

(KJV) Nahum 1:2

God is jealous, and the Lord revengeth; the Lord revengeth, and is furious; the Lord will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.

A JEALOUS AND AVENGING GOD / NAHUM 1:2

“Jealous” is used here in the sense of the Lord’s eagerness and passion for protecting His people (Deuteronomy 4:24; 5:9). He would take revenge on those who opposed His Word and kingdom by justly repaying them for their rebellion and hostility toward Him and His people (Deuteronomy 32:35,41).

NINEVEH / NAHUM 1:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Nahum 1:1

The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.

NINEVEH / NAHUM 1:1

Prophesying sometime between 663-612 B.C., Nahum predicted the downfall of Nineveh, Assyria’s Capital city. Nineveh had once repented of its extreme wickedness and turned to God for mercy in response to Jonah’s preaching more than 100 years earlier. However, the people had returned to their false gods and their practice of cruelty and oppression. The Assyrians had already conquered the northern kingdom of Israel and were now attacking and robbing parts of Judah. Nahum comforts God’s people by telling them that God would defend them and destroy the Assyrians. Nineveh’s fall occurred in 612 B.C., when it was conquered by a political and military alliance that included the Babylonians, Medes and Scythians.

BLESS THE ISRAELITES / NUMBERS 6:23

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Numbers 6:23

Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them,

BLESS THE ISRAELITES / NUMBERS 6:23

Numbers 6:22-27 show God’s gracious response to His people if they maintained purity in the congregation. The heart-devotion that they showed by their actions was viewed much like that of the Nazirite vow (Number 6:2). The “bless” (Hebrew barak) carries the idea that God’s presence, activity and love are brought into a person’s life and environment.

    1. This blessing was set before God’s faithful servants under the conditions He had established (Deuteronomy 11:27).
    2. The priestly blessing consisted of three parts; (a) The giving of God’s blessing and His protection from evil forces and all the was harmful to one’s welfare in life (Numbers 6:24; Psalms 71:1-6). (b) The shining of the Lord’s face upon them, God’s favor, goodwill and grace toward the people (Numbers 6:25), which meant His anger was turned away from them (Psalms 27:1; 31:16; Proverbs 15:30; 16:14; Isaiah 57:17). Grace is God’s mercy, love and saving power. (c) The turning of the Lord’s face toward them (Numbers 6:26), caring for and giving to them with heartfelt love (Psalms 4:7-8; 33:18; 34:17). What God gives is “peace” (Numbers 6:26). Being at peace (Hebrew shalom) means being complete because God supplies all that is necessary to give life its fullness (Malachi 2:4-6). This includes hope for the future (Jeremiah 29:11). The opposite of “peace” is not only lack of harmony, but evil in all its forms (Romans 1:7; 1 Corinthians 1:3; 1 Thessalonians 5:23).
    3. God’s blessing on His people would result in their being used to touch all the nations. They would reflect the lighted torch of God’s salvation to all of humankind (Psalms 67; 133:3; Ezekiel 34:26; Matthew 28:19; Luke 24:50).

THE NAZIRITE MAY DRINK WINE / NUMBERS 6:20

After the Nazirite ended the time of the vow, or dedicated service to God, he or she was permitted to drink wine (Hebrew yayin). At this time, the ban against using fermented wine (Hebrew yayin) was in effect only for those who were set apart for serve to God (Numbers 6:1-4; Leviticus 10:9-11). But as his people came to fully understand God’s highest plan for humankind, He would make it very clear that all His people were not to drink fermented yayin that could make them drunk (Proverbs 23:29-35; 23:31).

PRESENT HIS OFFERINGS / NUMBERS 6:14

After completing his vow of separation, the Nazirite was to offer the same kind of sacrifices that the high priest offered on the day of his ordination (Leviticus 8 – 9). All of these men or women (Numbers 6:2), who had completely dedicated themselves to God, were as important in God’s sight as the highest minister in the congregation. Greatness in God’s kingdom is not based on position or power. It is based on consecration and commitment (Luke 22:24-30).

    HAIR … GROW LONG / NUMBERS 6:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Numbers 6:5

All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the Lord, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow.

    HAIR … GROW LONG / NUMBERS 6:5

The Nazirite was to let his hair grow long as a visible symbol of his consecration to the Lord. According to Paul, long hair was normally a shame to a man (1 Corinthians 11:14). So, for a Nazirite to have long hair may have symbolized his willingness to bear words of shame that came from the people. All of this was for the Lord’s honor. The command not to go near a dead person (Numbers 6:6) taught that death was never God’s will when He created the human race. Death is the opposite of life and the end result of sin. Therefore, a corpse was viewed as unclean (Leviticus 12:1-2; Leviticus 13:3).

    (KJV) Numbers 6:2

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the Lord:

    NAZIRITE / NUMBERS 6:2

The word “Nazirite” (Hebrew nazir, from nazar, “to set apart”) was the term used for one who was set apart and dedicated completely to the Lord. The dedication, or period of holy commitment, could be for a specific period of time or for life (Judges 13:5; 1 Samuel 1:11).

    1. The Nazirites were raised up by God Himself in order that through their lifestyle they might demonstrate His highest standard of holiness, sanctity and commitment in the people’s presence (Amos 2:11-12).
    2. The Nazirite vow was completely voluntary and designed to teach Israel that total devotion to God must come first from a person’s heart. That heart commitment, however, needs to be expressed in self-denial (Numbers 6:3-4), visible profession (Numbers 6:5) and personal purity (Numbers 6:6-8). The Nazirite’s complete devotion serves as an example of what every Christian should seek to be.

WOMAN STAND BEFORE THE LORD / NUMBERS 5:18

If a husband had reason to think that his wife had committed adultery but there was no evidence, the husband could have the wife brought before the Lord. There her guilt or innocence would be determined. This was to protect her if she was innocent. She would become sick as a result of God’s judgment only if she was guilty (Numbers 5:21-28).
