ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD / ROMANS 4:3

(KJV) Romans 4:3

For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD / ROMANS 4:3

Salvation by faith, not by good works (keeping the law), is not only a New Testament teaching; it is also characteristic of the Old Testament. Paul uses Abraham (the founding father and original ancestor of the Hebrew people) as the example of faith. Abraham had faith in God, meaning that he was loyal and devoted to the Lord, believed in His promises (Romans 4:20-21; Genesis 12:1-3; 15:5-6) and responded in obedience to God’s commands and instructions (Genesis 12:1-4; 22:1-19; Hebrews 11:8-19; James 2:21-22).

WE UPHOLD THE LAW / ROMANS 3:31

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 3:31

Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

WE UPHOLD THE LAW / ROMANS 3:31

The fact that spiritual salvation is received through faith in Christ does not mean that God’s law and its standards have no value. In reality, justification (being made right with God) by faith supports and defends the law’s necessary and rightful purpose and function. It was God’s law that exposed our offenses against Him and revealed our need for His mercy and salvation (Romans 7:7-13; Galatians 3:24). When we respond to God’s mercy and are restored to a personal relationship with God through faith in Christ, we are renewed from the inside out by the power of the Holy Spirit. As a result, we gain the power and ability to honor and obey God’s moral law (Romans 8:2-4).

HIS BLOOD / ROMANS 3:25

(KJV) Romans 3:25

Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

HIS BLOOD / ROMANS 3:25

The New Testament emphasizes several truths concerning Christ’s death.

  1. It was a sacrifice. Jesus willingly offered His own perfect and sinless life (1 Corinthians 5:7; Ephesians 5:2).
  2. It was vicarious (experienced or endured by one person for the benefit of another). Jesus died not for His own sake, but for the sake of others (Romans 5:8; 8:32; Mark 10:45; Ephesians 5:2).
  3. It was substitutionary. Christ suffered death as the penalty for our sin, as our substitute (Romans 6:23).
  4. It was propitiatory (it made peace and resolved a problem). Christ’s death for sinners satisfied God’s perfect justice, righteousness, and moral order, which required that sin be punished, and a penalty be paid for human offenses against Him. Christ’s sacrifice covered that penalty in full, removing God’s wrath (His justified anger and punishment) from those who admit and turn from their sin, accept Christ’s forgiveness, and entrust their lives to Him. Through Christ’s blood, God’s holiness was not compromised, and He was able to reveal His grace (His unearned and undeserved favor) and love for us (John 3:16). God Himself put this plan in place, not because He owed us, but because of His love and mercy toward us. Already “God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:18-19; John 3:16; Romans 5:8; 8:3, 32; 1 Corinthians 8:6; Ephesians 4:4-6).
  5. It was expiatory (it supplied a right for our wrong against God). Jesus’ perfect sacrifice not only paid in full the price for our sin, but it also erases and cancels the guilt of those who accept His forgiveness and follow Him. Christ makes it just as if His followers had never offended God. By Christ’s death, the power of sin that separated God and people has been broken in the lives of those who give themselves completely to Him.
  6. It was completely effective. Christ’s atoning (sin-covering, forgiveness-providing) death has the power to restore people to a right relationship with God if they put their faith in Him.
  7. It was victorious. By dying on the cross, Christ fought against and was triumphant over the power of sin, or Satan and of His demonic forces that once held all of Humankind captive. His death was the beginning of the victory over the spiritual enemies of both God and humanity (Romans 8:3; John 12:31-32; Colossians 2:15). Jesus’ death paid the ransom (1 Peter 1:18-19) – to God, not to Satan. As a result, Jesus liberates people from sin (Romans 6:6), death (2 Timothy 1:10; 1 Corinthians 15:54-57) and Satan (Acts 10:38). Christ’s victory made it possible for people to serve God (Romans 6:18)

All the above results of Christ’s sacrificial death are available and potentially active for all people. But in reality, they only take effect in the lives of individuals who, through faith, accept Jesus’ sacrifice for themselves and show their devotion by submitting to His purposes for their lives.

JUSTIFIED FREELY BY HIS GRACE THROUGH THE REDEMPTION / ROMANS 3:24

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 3:24

Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

JUSTIFIED FREELY BY HIS GRACE THROUGH THE REDEMPTION / ROMANS 3:24

This verse contains two of the most common words that Paul used to express the concept of salvation: “justified” and “redemption.” The root meaning of “redemption” (Greek apolutrosis) is ransom by the payment of a price. To be redeemed means to be paid for, purchased, bought back or restored. It also relates to being rescued liberated ad set free. “To be justified” (Greek dikaioo) means to be “righteous in God’s sight” (Romans 2:13), to be “made righteous” (Romans 5:18-19), to “establish as right” or to “set or put something right.” In a judicial sense, it means to be declared “not guilty.”

FAITH / ROMANS 3:22

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 3:22

Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

FAITH / ROMANS 3:22

This righteousness from God (Romans 3:21) comes to us only through faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord – the Forgiver of sins and the Leader of life. This faith – which is the only condition God requires for salvation – is not simply and intellectual belief in God or acknowledgment of Jesus’ death for our sins. It is an active and ongoing faith that yields to the leadership of Christ and continues to follow Him in loving obedience and gratitude to God (John 1:12; John 5:24).

A RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM GOD / ROMANS 3:21

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 3:21

But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

A RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM GOD / ROMANS 3:21

This phrase refers to God’s redemptive (spiritually rescuing, saving, restoring) activity as it relates to human sin. Since we could never deserve His mercy or favor by our own efforts, through His grace God has provided a way for us to be restored to a right relationship with Himself. It is a way that satisfied His perfect justice (Romand 3:26) – which required a penalty and punishment for our sin – and yet provides forgiveness, freedom from guilt and victory over the power of evil. God’s plan of spiritual salvation saves people from the final consequences of sin and provides them with the gift of eternal life through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ (Romans 6:23). Receiving this gift is what makes a person righteous (right with God and empowered to live right by His standard). Spiritual salvation and righteousness are so directly related that throughout the Old Testament, God’s work of salvation and His display of righteousness are basically the same thing (Psalms 32:2; 98:1-2; Isaiah 46:13; 51:5-8; 56:1-2; 62:1). God’s righteousness, as revealed through the New Testament message of Jesus Christ, is still available to all who accept the forgiveness and new life made possible through Jesus’ personal sacrifice, which paid the full penalty for our sin against God. The power of this message to provide spiritual salvation (Romans 1:16) and to bring people into a right relationship with God is constantly fresh and relevant.

CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD / GENESIS 4:26

And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.

CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD / GENESIS 4:26

Apparently, Enosh was a pioneer for public prayer and worship (2 Samuel 6:2; 1 Chronicles 13:6; Psalms 79:6; Jeremiah 10:25, where calling on the name of the Lord refers to public worship). Cain’s ungodly family increased their self-reliance and started to center their lives around the secular arts and business. In contrast, Seth’s family called “on the name of the LORD” in order to express their dependence on Him. Two completely different family groups were developing on the earth: the godly and the ungodly.

UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE EVIL ONE / 1 JOHN 5:19

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 5:19

And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE EVIL ONE / 1 JOHN 5:19

We will never adequately understand the New Testament unless we recognize its underlying conviction that Satan is the god of this corrupt world system. He is the evil one, and his power controls the present evil age (Luke 13:16; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Galatians 1:4; Ephesians 6:12; Hebrews 2:14; Matthew 4:10).

  1. God’s Word does not teach that God is now in direct control of the ungodly world that involves sinful people, evil, cruelty, and injustice. In no way does God desire or cause all the suffering in the world, nor is everything that happens part of His perfect desires and purposes (Matthew 23:37; Luke 13:34; Luke 19:41-44; Luke 19:41; Luke 19:43). The bible teaches that at this present time, the world is in willful rebellion against God and His rule; therefore, it has come under Satan’s dominion and is a slave to sin and evil. These ungodly conditions affect all people on earth- those who follow God and those who do not. Because of this condition, Christ came to die (John 3:16), to pay the ultimate penalty for sin and to reconcile the world to God (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). We have the responsibility to battle sin and evil.
  2. However, there is a sense in which God is in control of the ungodly world. Gid is sovereign (with supreme power and authority to do as He chooses), which means that all things happen only as He allows. At times, God may directly intervene to accomplish His purposes, but this does not mean that He overrides the free will He has given all people or the consequences that human choices bring on the world. For now, God has chosen to limit His supreme power and rule over the world. Yet this self-limitation is only temporary, because at the time determined by His wisdom, God will destroy Satan and all evil and judge the wicked (Revelation 19-20).

Only then will “the kingdom of the world become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign for ever and ever (Revelation 11:15).

SIN THAT DOES NOT LEAD TO DEATH / 1 JOHN 5:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 5:17

All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

SIN THAT DOES NOT LEAD TO DEATH / 1 JOHN 5:17

John distinguishes between two types of sins:

  1. Less serious sins that do not immediately lead to spiritual death (separation for relationship with God); and
  2. sins so terrible that they indicate a purposeful rebellion against God and His Word, which lead to spiritual death and separation from the life of God (John 3:15; Numbers 15:31; Romans 8:13; Galatians 5:4). Such deadly sin includes the false teaching that John combats in much of this letter – teaching that denied that Jesus was the Christ (the Messiah and Savior 1 John 2:22) and that He was God in literal human form (1 John 4:2). These defiant beliefs led people to throw off all moral restraint and to behave with shameless disregard for God’s commands and standards (1 John 2:3-5, 15-17; 3:3-10; 5:2-3, 18; 1 John 5:2; 1 John 5:3). Such open defiance toward God and refusal to change lead to ultimate spiritual death – eternal separation for God.
