MY RAINBOW IN THE CLOUDS / GENESIS 9:13

The rainbow was God’s sign and ongoing reminder of His promise to never again destroy everything on earth by a flood. The rainbow should remind Christians that God’s mercy is sure and that He keeps His promises.

I NOW ESTABLISH MY COVENANT / GENESIS 9:9-17

(KJV) Genesis 9:9-17

 And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth. And I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.  And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.

These verses speak of God’s covenant with humanity and nature, in which He promised never again to destroy the earth and all its creatures with a flood (Genesis 9:11, 15).

For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.

HE KNOWS HOW WE ARE FORMED / PSALMS 103:14

God has compassion on us because He knows our weaknesses and frailties. Even His most faithful followers are in need of His compassion. As a good father has deep compassion for His children when they fail, suffer or are mistreated, so also the heavenly Father hurts when His children are hurting. During times of trouble, failure or struggle, we must not think that God is distant or uncaring. Instead, we must remember that He looks on us with compassion, and He will help us with whatever we need (Luke 7:12-13).

COMPASSION ON THOSE WHO FEAR HIM / PSALMS 103:13

(KJV) Psalms 103:13

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.

COMPASSION ON THOSE WHO FEAR HIM / PSALMS 103:13

God shows mercy to those who truly honor and respect Him for His power, judgment and intolerance of evil. The “fear of God” is a liberating fear that motivates us to avoid evil, to obey God’s Word and to live with a constant awareness of God’s mercy with a constant awareness of God’s mercy and nearness. According to this passage of Scripture, the blessings God gives to those who fear Him are:

  1. His mercy, love and forgiveness (Psalms 103:11-12, 17; Isaiah 1:18; Isaiah 38:17; Jeremiah 31:14).
  2. His fatherly compassion (Psalms 103:13-14).
  3. His faithfulness and goodness to their families and descendants (Psalms 103:17).

FORGIVES … HEALS / PSALMS 103:3-16

(KJV) Psalms 103:3-16

Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s. The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed. He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel. He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel. He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.  Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.

FORGIVES … HEALS / PSALMS 103:3-16

Since the first humans rebelled against God’s instructions, the curse of sin, sickness and death has been upon the entire human race. But God has provided the means for victory over the consequences of this curse. This psalm lists God’s benefits for His people” forgiveness of sins, healing for diseases and the gifts of spiritual freedom and eternal life. Forgiveness is the first and most important gift we can receive from God because it restores our relationship with Him and rescues us from spiritual destruction (Psalms 103:4). Physical healing is also part of God’s complete salvation – a benefit available to those who have received forgiveness and a personal relationship with God (James 5:15-16).

2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

PRAISE THE LORD, O MY SOUL / PSALMS 103:1-2

This psalm expresses thanksgiving and praise to the Lord for the benefits and blessings He gives those who accept His commands and promises and who maintain a faithful relationship with Him. We must never forget God’s goodness to us (Deuteronomy 8:12-14; 2 Chronicles 32:25) or fail to thank Him for the blessings He generously gives us through the Holy Spirit (Psalms 103:3-16; Acts 2:38; Acts 2:39; Acts 9:17-18; John 14:16).

WHOEVER SHEDS THE BLOOD OF MAN, BY MAN SHALL HIS BLOOD BE SHED / GENESIS 9:6

(KJV) Genesis 9:6

Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.

WHOEVER SHEDS THE BLOOD OF MAN, BY MAN SHALL HIS BLOOD BE SHED / GENESIS 9:6

Because of the violent desires within the human heart (Genesis 6:11; 8:21), God laid out a plan to guard the sanctity of human life. He did this in two ways.

  1. He emphasized that all humans are created in His image (Genesis 1:26) and that their lives are sacred to Him.
  2. He declared a method of justice for intentionally taking another person’s life (Exodus 21:12, 14; 22:2; Numbers 35:6-34; Deuteronomy 19:1-3; Romans 13:4). The authority of governments to carry out the method of justice for murder is also discussed in the New Testament (Acts 25:11; Romans 13:4; Matthew 26:52).

BUT GOD REMEMBERED NOAH / GENESIS 8:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 8:1

And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters assuaged;

BUT GOD REMEMBERED NOAH / GENESIS 8:1

Noah did not hear from God for 150 days (Genesis 7:24). This was a test of his faith because he had no idea when the waters would dry up or when God would step in to help him again. But God had not forgotten Noah and his family. God’s interaction with Noah is recorded to inspire hope and trust in his ways. If it seems that God has not acted in your life for a long time, learn from Noah. You can be confident that He loves you and is still at work in your life. For now, stay close to God and continue to obey His Word. His Spirit will bring direction (Proverbs 3:5-6; 16:3; Philippians 2:13).

PAUL’S GOD-GIVEN COMMISSION / ACTS 26:17-18

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Acts 26:17-18 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,

18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

PAUL’S GOD-GIVEN COMMISSION / ACTS 26:17-18

This verse is a classic statement of the effects Jesus desires from the preaching of His message to spiritually lost people (those who have not yet received His forgiveness and a renewed personal relationship with Him).

  1. “Open their eyes.” Those who do not know Christ are blinded by Satan to the reality of their spiritual lostness and future destruction. They do not comprehend the truth of the gospel (2 Corinthians 4:4). Preaching about Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit is the only thing that will expose their true condition and “open their eyes” of understanding (2 Corinthians 4:5; Ephesians 1:18).
  2. “Turn them from…the power of Satan to God.” Satan is the ruler of this world full of people who choose to go their own way. All who have not surrendered their lives to Christ’s authority are under Satan’s control and enslaved to his power. Satan’s work and influence are evident in all who follow the ways of the world and “in those who are disobedient” (Ephesians 2:2). Preaching about Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit will rescue men and women from Satan’s power and bring them into Christ’s kingdom (Colossians 1:13; 1 Peter 2:9).
  3. “That they may receive forgiveness of sins.” Forgiveness is only possible because of Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross, which paid the full penalty for our sins. When people hear this message, they can respond in faith by accepting Christ’s sacrifice for themselves and by yielding control of their lives to Him.
  4. “A place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.” Those who are forgiven of sin, freed from the power of Satan, and spiritually renewed by the Holy Spirit are then set apart from the world and reserved for God’s purposes. Through the further experience of baptism in the Holy Spirit, they are empowered for those purposes as they grow deeper in their relationship with Christ.
