Both Matthew’s and Luke’s Gospel narratives agree that Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:18; Luke 1:34-35) and born of a virgin mother – that is, without the participation of a human father. Those who doubt the Bible is the true and accurate historical account of God’s plan and involvement with humankind have long argued against the doctrine (teaching or principle that forms the basis of a belief) of Jesu’ virgin birth. Yet, the prophet Isaiah also promised a virgin-born child who would be called “Immanuel,” a Hebrew term meaning “God with us” (Isaiah 7:14). Isaia’s prediction was made 700 years before the birth of Christ.

The Hebrew word used by Isaiah for virgin (almah) means a young woman who is old enough to be married but who has not yet had any sexual relations. The term is never used in the Old Testament for any state other than literal virginity (Genesis 24:43; Song Of Solomon 1:3; 6:8). This means that Isaiah in the Old Testament and Matthew and Luke in the New Testament all attest to (agree and declare the certainty of) the fact that Jesus’ mother was a virgin from the time of Jesus’ conception to the time of His birth (Matthew 1:25; Isaiah 7:14).
  2. The importance of the virgin birth cannot be stressed enough. In order for Jesus to qualify as the only One who could pay the price for our sin and retore our broken relationship with God, He must be fully human, totally sinless and yet fully God (Hebrews 7:25-26). In order for Christ’s sacrifice to be able to cover sin once and for all, His life had to be perfect – undeserving of death – and only God Himself could provide such a perfect sacrifice. The virgin birth satisfies all three requirements. (a) The only way Jesus truly could become a human being in every sense was to be born of a woman. (b) The only way He could be totally sinless – not only throughout His life but from birth – was to be conceived by the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:20; Hebrews 4:15). (c) The only way He could be divine (fully God) was to have God as His Father. Jesus was conceived not by natural but by supernatural means: “the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35). As a result, Jesus Christ is revealed to us as one Person with two natures – divine God and sinless human.
  3. By living and suffering as a human person, Jesus understands and identifies with the feeling of our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15-16). As the Son of God, He has the power to free us from sin’s destruction and Satan’s power and to restore our relationship with God (Acts 26:17-18; Colossians 2:15; Hebrews 2:14; 7:25). As both God and human, He qualifies to serve as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of every person who ever lives. He also qualifies as the ultimate high priest who serves as mediator between God and all who come to Him for mercy and forgiveness (Hebrews 2:9-18; 5:1-9; 7:24-28; 10:4-12). Being full God and fully man, Jesus was able to bridge the gap that sin had created between God and all humankind.

She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[a] because he will save his people from their sins.”

JESUS / MATTHEW 1:21

The name “Jesus” is the Greek form of the Hebrew word “Yeshua”(Jshua), meaning “the LORD saves” (Joshua 1:1). This describes the future mission of Mary’s son and is the early promise of the gospel – the “good new” of spiritual salvation through Jesus. As the Savior Jesus “will save His people form their sins” – their spiritual rebellion and offenses against God. Sin is the greatest enemy of the human race because it separates humankind from God and is present to destroy every eternal soul and every life. However, Jesus broke the power of sin by sacrificing His own sinless life to pay the full penalty for our offenses against God. Those who accept God’s forgiveness and yield their lives to Jesus are spiritually transformed through the power of the Holy Spirit (the same Spirit by which Jesus was conceived and born into the human race). Such people are spiritually “saved” – rescued and set free from the guilt and slavery of sin (John 8:31-36; Acts 26:17-18; Romans 6; 8:1-6).

The virgin birth of Jesus (the fact that He was conceived by a miracle of God, without a human sexual union) is affirmed in this genealogy (family history). Notice how the words “the father of” are used with all the names down to Joseph, then comes a change. It does not say that Joseph “was the father of” Jesus, but rather that Joseph was the “husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus” (Matthew 1:23).

The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

CHRIST – SON OF DAVID / MATTHEW 1:1

CHRIST

The word “Christ” (Greek christos) means “anointed” (which suggests being chosen, commissioned, empowered, set par for special service). It is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew term “Messiah,” which refers to the Savior the Jews had long expected (Daniel 9:25-26).

  1. From the beginning of his message, Matthew affirms that Jesus is God’s “Anointed One” – filled with and empowered by the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 61:1; Luke 4:18-19; John 3:34; Acts 10:38).
  2. He was anointed to fill three specific roles: (a) a Prophet, to challenge people to maintain or renew their relationship with God and to help them understand the truth (Deuteronomy 18:15); (b) a Priest, to be the mediator of a renewed relationship between God and people by offering the sacrifice (His own life) that would pay the full penalty for humanity’s offenses against God (Psalms 110:4; Hebrews 10:10-14); and (c) a King, to establish the purposes of God’s kingdom on earth and to guide and rule His people with perfect justice (Psalms 9:8; Isaiah 32:1; Zechariah 9:9).

SON OF DAVID

  1. Matthew provides the clear record that Jesus was a legal descendant of David by tracing the family history of His earthly father, Joseph, who was from the family line of King David. Although Jesus was conceived by a miraculous act of the Holy Spirit, in earthly terms He was still formally registered as Joseph’s son, which met that He was legally a “son of David.”
  2. The family history outlined in Luke’s Gospel (Luke 3:23) traces Jesus’ ancestry through the males on His mother Mary’s side (she was also from David’s family line). Luke stresses that Jesus is the flesh-and-blood child (physical “offspring”) of Mary, which focuses on His humanity and the fact that He was one of us (Romans 1:3). In this way, the Gospel writers show how Jesus had both a legal and biological claim as the true Messiah, the Christ.

GENEALOGY OF JESUS CHRIST / MATTHEW 1:1-16

Matthew’s Gospel – his account of the “good news” and true story about Jesus Christ – opens with this list of Jesu’ Jewish ancestors. This Gospel traces Jesus’ family history through the paternal line (His earthly father’s side), as was Jewish custom (Matthew 1:16). Although Joseph was not Jesus’ biological father (Jesus was conceived by a miracle of the Holy Spirit, Matthew 1:20), he was his legal father. God had promised that the Messiah – the promised Savior who would be a blessing to the whole world – would be a descendant of Abraham (Genesis 12:3; Genesis 22:18; Galatians 3:16) and King David (2 Samuel 7:12-19; Jeremiah 23:5). By tracing Jesus’ legal ancestry back to these two men, Matthew shows the Jews that Jesus had the proper genealogy (family history) to qualify as the Messiah (Matthew 1:1). Look closely at some of the people in Jesus’ family line. Several in the list experienced some major failures in their lives (Judah, Rahab, Manasseh), yet they represent the broad range of people who put their faith in God and became part of His family. They also serve as examples of how God can work His highest purposes through anyone who totally submits to Him, no matter how ungodly their background or failures have been.

One of Lot’s Biggest mistakes was that he seemed to love personal gain more than he hated Sodom’s wickedness (Genesis 13:10-13).

  1. If he had been more determined to do what was right (Hebrews 1:9), he would not have put up with the evil in Sodom, and he certainly would not have chosen to live there (Genesis 13:13). Perhaps he felt that Sodom’s beauty, wealth and cultural advantages outweighed the risks to himself and his family. Perhaps he believed he would remain spiritually faithful to God. But by willfully choosing to expose himself and his family to Sodom’s immoral and ungodly lifestyle, Lot learned the bitter lesson that his family was not strong enough to resist its evil influences (Genesis 19:24-26, 30-38).
  2. Unless we are certain that God is specifically leading us into risky situations in order to reach people with the salvation in order to reach people with the salvation message, we must be careful not to place ourselves or our families in “Sodom” situations. If we do, we are likely to encounter disaster, just like Lot’s family did.

Scripture tells us that “the LORD does not look at the things man looks at” (1 Samuel 16:7). Lot saw only the rich, grassy valley that seemed promising for his future. DEATH AND HADES – THE LAKE OF FIRE / REVELATION 20:14

And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

DEATH AND HADES – THE LAKE OF FIRE / REVELATION 20:14

DEATH AND HADES

Hades refers to the place of intermediate punishment where all the ungodly go now when they die to await final judgment (Revelation 1:18; Revelation 6:8; Revelation 20:13-14). After the final judgment removes all the ungodly and Satan himself into the lake of fire there will be no further need for death or Hades. Its fires and torment will be absorbed into the ultimate place of eternal punishment. The only place where death (spiritual death, which is permanent separation from God) will exist is in the place of eternal punishment. Taht is why the lake of fire is referred to as the “second death.” Those consigned to it will have no hope for resurrection or rescue. Anyone whose name is not found in the Book of Life will suffer forever in the lake of fire.

THE LAKE OF FIRE

The Bible portrays a terrible picture of the final doom of the spiritually lost.

  1. It speaks of “trouble and distress” (Romans 2:9), “weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 22:13; 25:30), “everlasting destruction” (2 Thessalonians 1:9) and a “fiery furnace” (Matthew 13:42, 50). It speaks of “gloomy dungeons” (2 Peter 2:4), “eternal punishment” (Matthew 25:46), a “hell, where the fire never goes out” (Mark 9:43), a “fiery lake of burning sulfur” (Revelation 19:20) and “the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or night” (Revelation 14:11). Certainly, “It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31); “It would be better for him if he had not been born” (Matthew 26:24; Matthew 10:28).
  2. The lake of fire was not originally prepared for people, but rather was the judgment reserved for Satan and the angels who followed him in rebellion against God (Matthew 25:41). By the time the “Great White Throne Judgment” (Revelation 20:11-13) takes place, Satan will have already been thrown into the lake of fire, along with the antichrist and his false prophet. But because of God’s perfect justice, He must also condemn all others who defy Him and do not turn from their own way and accept His gracious offer of forgiveness and eternal life with Him.
  3. Christ’s followers in the New Testament church were extremely aware of the consequences in store for those who persisted in living in sin (going their ow God-defying way). It was for this reason they preached with tears (Acts 20:19) and defended God’s unfailing Word and original message of Christ against all distortion and false teaching (Philippians 1:17; 2 Timothy 1:14).

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

ACCORDING TO WHAT THEY HAD DONE / REVELATION 20:12-13

The lives of all who did not accept God’s forgiveness and entrust their lives to Him will be completely exposed before God. Every selfish and defiant act and ungodly thought will be called into account. Even the “secret sins,” which it seemed no one knew about, will be brought to light and judged (Luke 8:17; Romans 2:16). All will be judged individually for their works according to God’s standards and principles, with consideration for motives and opportunities (Luke 12:47-48). This indicates differences in the sentencing and degree of punishment, but not in the duration. The torment of the lake of fire (Revelation 20:14) is unquenchable and will last forever.

The glory of God and the fire of His judgment surrounding the Great White Throne are so intense that even the elements of the physical universe cannot remine in God’s presence (Revelation 20:11). It seems that since these things are no longer needed, they will cease to exist. This is likely part of the preparation for the creation oof a new heaven and earth (Revelation 21:1; Isaiah 51:6; 2 Peter 3:7, 10-12).
