SENDS THEM A POWERFUL DELUISION / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:11

(KJV) 2 Thessalonians 2:11

And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

SENDS THEM A POWERFUL DELUISION / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:11

After God’s restraining influence is “taken out of the way” (2 Thessalonians 2:8) and the lawless one is revealed, people who have “refused to love the truth and so be saved” (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10) will come under “a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie” (Romans 1:25). As a result, they will be eternally lost (without hope of spiritual salvation, eternally separated from God).

  1. These people will consist of all those inside or outside the church who, after adequately hearing the truth of God’s Word, have intentionally refused to love the truth and have chosen instead to delight in the world’s wickedness (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10; 2 Thessalonians 2:12).
  2. God will give these people over (Romans 1:24, 26, 28) to a powerful delusion, or deception, so that they never again have an opportunity to believe the truth they refused to accept and love (2 Thessalonians 2:12). They are forever doomed to believe “the lie” (the claims of the lawless one and the deception of Satan).
  3. God sending the “powerful delusion” is part of His judgment on those who reject the truth. It is His assurance that they “will be condemned” (2 Thessalonians 2:12). For those who have heard and understood God’s Word yet have not loved its truth but have chosen instead to delight in wickedness and pursue the pleasure of sin, “no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment” (Hebrews 10:26-27).
  4. The opportunity for spiritual salvation during the tribulation period (after Christ has taken His followers out of the world) will be offered to those living during that time who have not yet had an adequate opportunity to hear and understand the message of Christ (Revelation 7:14; Revelation 11:3: Revelation 14:6-7). Those who proclaim the message of Christ during those days may include the 144,000 from the tribes of Israel (Revelation 7:4), the two witnesses (Revelation 11:3) and the angels (Revelation 14:6).
