SAID TO ME – THE GREAT PROSTITUTE / REVELATION 17:1

Revelation 17 – 18 portrays the fall of “Babylon the Great,” which was previously announced in Revelation 14:8 and Revelation 16:19.

Babylon (Revelation 17:5) is the symbol for the whole world system that has been dominated by Satan throughout history, and which acts out his wicked schemes politically, religiously, economically and commercially (Jeremiah 50:1; 51:1-64).
This Babylon will be completely destroyed during the last three and a half years of this age (during the great tribulation) by God’s judgments on the earth. Religious Babylon (the prostitute) will be destroyed by the antichrist (Revelation 17:16-17), who will use religion for his own deceptive purposes before pushing it aside as useless. At His coming, Christ will destroy political Babylon (Revelation 19:11-12).

THE GREAT PROSTITUTE

The prostitute represents religious “Babylon” and encompasses all false religions, including unfaithful and rebellious forms of Christianity. In the Bible, terms and images of prostitution and adultery are often used as figures of speech referring to unfaithfulness to God through idolatry (worshiping false gods or giving propriety to anything over the one true God) or any form or rebellion against Him (Isaiah 1:21; Jeremiah 3:9; Ezekiel 16:14-18, 32; James 4:4). This description is particularly relevant to those who pretend to serve God while actually worshiping and serving other gods. Note the sharp contrast between the great prostitute and the bride of Christ (the true church, including all faithful followers of Christ; Revelation 19:7-8). The prostitute is submitted to Satan; the bride is submitted to Christ. Satan clothes the one in glittering excess to conceal her true filthiness (Revelation 17:4); God clothes the other in brilliant cleanliness to reveal her true purity (Revelation 19:8). Eternal death is the payment in store for the prostitute; eternal life in glory is the reward of the bride.

Concerning this false religious system:

It will reject the truth of Christ (Romans 2:8; Titus 1:14), throw aside the foundational teachings of genuine Christian faith (2 Timothy 3:5) and mistreat those who are loyal to Christ and God’s Word.
It will enter into partnership with the corrupt political, economic and social systems of “Babylon” (Revelation 3:15-16). The antichrist will unite religion with political systems in order to manipulate and take spiritual control over the nations (Revelation 17:18).
Religious leaders, just as they did to Jesus Himself, will persecute true followers of Christ who believe that Jesus is the only way to God (Revelation 17:6; John 14:6). The corrupt religious system of the world – particularly under the antichrist – will combine the beliefs and practices of many religious philosophies and will require acceptance and tolerance of all faiths as equally valid. It will reject any standard of absolute truth (relevant for all people in all situations for all time). The chief concern will be a worldwide, unified religious system joined with a unified international political system. This false religious system will become a “home for demons and a haunt for every evil spirit” (Revelation 18:2; Isaiah 47:12-13).
All true followers of Christ are commanded to separate themselves from this unholy religious alliance or they will be condemned along with it (Revelation 18:4).
In the end, God will cause the antichrist to turn on and destroy this religious prostitute (Revelation 17:16).
