RED HEIFER / NUMBERS 19:2

(KJV) Numbers 19:2

This is the ordinance of the law which the Lord hath commanded, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer without spot, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke:

The sacrifice of the red heifer provided cleansing for anyone who was ritually unclean or defiled. Because they were unclean, they were not able to draw near to God in worship (Numbers 19:11, 14, 16). A red heifer without any blemish was killed and burned outside the camp (Numbers 19:3-6). The ashes were kept, mixed with water (Numbers 19:9, 17) and sprinkled on those who were defiled (Numbers 19:12, 18). After being cleansed, the person could approach God once again. The book of Hebrews contrasts the superior cleansing effect of Christ’s blood to that of the ashes of the red heifer (Hebrews 9:13-14).
