(KJV) Malachi 1:6-8
A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the Lord of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name? 7 Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of the Lord is contemptible. 8 And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the Lord of hosts.
PRIESTS WHO SHOW CONTEMPT FOR MY NAME / MALACHI 1:6-8
Malachi accuses the spiritual leaders because they were not acting like leaders representing God.
- They were showing no respect for God: at the sacrificial offerings to Him animals that were crippled or diseased. This was contrary to God’s law, which required unblemished sacrifices – the best of their flocks and herds (Leviticus 22:22).
- As followers of Christ, we must give to God the best we have, not what remains after we have taken or used the best to satisfy our own desires. Our whole life should be a living sacrifice to God (Romans 12:1). The personal time we spend with God in prayer and Bible study should be the prime time of the day, not what remains after we have taken care of everything else or when we are too tired to do anything else. That is why it is beneficial to start the day with “quiet time” in God’s presence.
“The LORD’S table” was the altar used for making the animal sacrifices (the priests were allowed to take their portion of food from the sacrifices made at “the LORD’S table”). God said that it would have been better to make no sacrifices at all than to offer them with disrespect for God (Malachi 1:10). Sacrifices given with unfaithful hearts are not acceptable to God.
