(KJV) Exodus 7:20
And Moses and Aaron did so, as the Lord commanded; and he lifted up the rod, and smote the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood.
HE STRUCK THE WATER / EXODUS 7:20
The ten miraculous plagues against Egypt (Exodus 7:20; 8:2, 16, 21; 9:3, 9, 18; 10:4, 21; 11:5) had several purposes.
- They were signs to show Egypt, as well as Israel, that the Lord is God above all gods and human beings (Exodus 7:5; 9:14-15; 10:2; 15:11) and to make God known “in all the earth” (Exodus 9:16).
- They were performed to strengthen Israel’s faith and to convince them of God’s power, love and ultimate authority over everything. From this point on, Israel was to tell their children about these events so that the following generations would be inspired to know and follow God (Exodus 6:7; Exodus 10:2; 12:42).
- They demonstrated God’s power over Egypt’s gods and all other evil powers in order to help and protect His people (Exodus 12:12).
- They were God’s judgments on Egypt to persuade Pharaoh to let God’s people go (Exodus 8:2, 21; 11:1; 12:31-33; Numbers 33:4).
