FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
From the time John was born, God’s Spirit was within him to guide and empower him for God’s service. Notice the results of John’s Spirit-filled life and ministry. Through the power of the Holy Spirit
- his preaching exposes people’s sins and convinces them to turn back to God (Luke 1:15-14; John 16:8);
- he preaches in the spirit and power of the prophet Elijah (Luke 1:17; Acts 1:8);
- he helps restore right relationships in families and leads many people to do what is right by God’s standards (Luke 1:17).
WINE … FERMENTED DRINK
the literal translation of the Greek text here is “He will never drink wine [oinos] or strong drink [sikera].” The work “other” (“other fermented drink”) does not appear in the Greek. The Greek word used for “fermented drink” is sikera. Its exact meaning has not been determined, but it undoubtedly corresponds to the Old Testament word shekar.
