DEEPLY MOVED IN SPIRIT / JOHN 11:33

(KJV) John 11:33

When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.

This passage reveals Jesus’ deep empathy and compassion as He faces the heartbreak and suffering caused by all the evil in the world.

1. The word meaning “deeply moved” (Greek embrimaomai) gives a picture of deep grief, involving both sympathy and anger. Jesus was grieved and angered by all the misery resulting from sin (not specifically Lazarus’ sin, but all of humanity’s rebellion and offenses against God) – death being its most severe consequence. But Jesus would do more than grieve over the situation. He would perform a miracle in raising Lazarus now. Later, Jesus would die for all sin and then rise from the dead in order to provide the opportunity of forgiveness and salvation for the human race (John 11:35; Matthew 23:13; Matthew 21:12-13; Mark 11:15-16; Mark 11:17; Luke 19:45-46; John 2:14-16).
2. One of the surest signs of God’s saving work in our lives is that we begin to notice how much misery, sorrow and suffering has been caused by sin (by people going their own way, opposing and defying God, Genesis 3:16-19; Romans 5:12). This awareness will lead to greater compassion for the suffering and hatred for sin, which in turn will inspire us to reach out to those who are spiritually lost and still in need of Christ’s forgiveness and eternal life. In no way can Christ’s followers take pleasure in sin and things that defy God’s standards of purity and truth (Romans 1:32; 2 Thessalonians 2:12; Hebrews 1:9).
