And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.

144,000 FROM ALL THE TRIBES OF ISRAEL / REVELATION 7:4

The 144,000 are described as servants of God (Revelation 7:3) from the tribes of Israel (Revelation 7:4-8). God will put a seal, or mark, on their foreheads to reflect His ownership and the fact that these people are set apart for His special purpose (Revelation 9:4; Ezekiel 9:1-6; 2 Timothy 2:19).

  1. Some Bible interpreters believe these new believers from the tribes (family lines) of Israel will be commissioned and empowered by the Holy Spirit to preach the true message of Christ during the tribulation.
  2. Their being sealed by God does not mean they are protected from natural physical death or from being killed as a result of persecution for their faith (Revelation 7:14). However, they are spared and protected from God’s direct judgment and from torture or harm by demonic forces unleashed on humanity during this time (Revelation 9:4).

And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.

I SAW FOUR ANGELS / REVELATION 7:1

Revelation 7 is an interlude, or pause, between the sixth and seventh seals. At this point, John sees two visions that are distinct from the events connected to the opening of the seals. These visions involve a revelation of those who believed and became faithful to Christ during the great tribulation. Those who take their stand for God (Revelation 6:17) are both Jew (Revelation 7:3-8) and non-Jew (Revelation 7:9-10, 13-15). They accept the eternal message of Christ proclaimed by angels (Revelation 14:6).

FALL ON US – THE WRATH OF THE LAMB / REVELATION 6:16

And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

FALL ON US – THE WRATH OF THE LAMB / REVELATION 6:16

FALL ON US

The ungodly who are left behind after Christ’s followers are caught up from the earth to meet the Lord in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:17) will experience intense fear and will attempt to hide and protect themselves from these events. When they realize that their attempts for shelter are useless, they will reach the point of suicidal despair in hopes of escaping God’s judgment. Amazingly, they will still refuse to acknowledge and turn to God (Revelation 16:9, 11).

THE WRATH OF THE LAMB

Christ’s judgements portrayed in Revelation 6-19 should alert all readers to the extent that God hates sin and wickedness and that there will be an end to His tolerance of these things. His wrath (justified anger, judgment and punishment) unleashed by these events is directed at those who refused to turn from their own evil ways and follow Him. Christ’s wrath is the same as the wrath of God (Revelation 15:7; Romans 1:18; Hebrews 1:9). When Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sin, He took God’s wrath on Himself so that those who accept His forgiveness and entrust their lives to Him could escape the wrath to come. This means that those who are faithful to Christ now will not have to suffer God’s wrath (1 Thessalonians 5:9), for Jesus has promised to rescue them from the coming end-time judgments (Revelation 3:10; 1 Thessalonians 1:10).

GREAT EARTHQUAKE / REVELATION 6:12-13

(KJV) Revelation 6:12-13

And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; 13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

GREAT EARTHQUAKE / REVELATION 6:12-13

With the opening of the sixth seal, John’s attention quickly returns to earth as he gets a glimpse of disastrous events to come that will throw the natural order of the visible universe into disarray. The catastrophic judgments portrayed here involve a physical shaking of the world, turmoil in the visible universe and intense darkness and terror for people on earth (Revelation 6:15-17; Isaiah 34:4; Joel 2:30-31; Haggi 2:6-9; Matthew 24:29). This appears to be a preview of the very end, though there is still a seventh seal (Revelation 8).

Once again, it seems clear that the three series of sevens (seals Revelation 6:1, trumpets Revelation 8:6, bowls Revelation 16:1) do not simply take place in a linear order following one after the other, since each set of seven appears to bring us to the end of the entire period. John may likely see these series of judgments in a more cyclical, overlapping and concurrent pattern, with each series of seven previewing things that will coincide with judgments in the next series. Each seventh judgment actually opens or starts the next series of events, with the severity of judgment intensifying with each series. It is as if each series of seven “zooms in” a little closer – like a lens – providing a narrower and more direct focus on the last days of the tribulation period. In this case, each seventh judgment (the last one in each series) brings us closer to Christ’s return to earth.

BROTHERS WHO WERE TO BE KILLED / REVELATION 6:11

(KJV) Revelation 6:11

And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellow servants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

BROTHERS WHO WERE TO BE KILLED / REVELATION 6:11

Some people will be given the opportunity to receive Christ and be spiritually saved during the tribulation. Primarily, this will include those living through that period who had never adequately heard or understood the message of Christ. But those who heard the gospel before the rapture of the church and yet continued to resist God and live in sin will not likely be given further opportunity for salvation after the church is suddenly taken out of the world. Some people think that those who knew the truth but formerly rejected Christ will surely turn to Him after they realize that the church is gone and see the antichrist rise to power; but the Bible seems to indicate the opposite. The tribulation judgments will not cause people to repent (Revelation 9:21; 16:9, 1, 21). The tribulation is primarily the time of God’s judgment, not His mercy. In addition, the Bible indicates that those who do not respond to the truth now will be even further deceived by Satan. In fact, God Himself “sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie” (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12). It is highly unlikely that anyone who knows the truth but does not turn to God now – when it is relatively easy to do so – will turn to Him during the tribulation when it will be extremely difficult and will cost many their lives. The Bible warns that there is no second chance for those who deliberately reject Christ prior to the rapture. We must not put false hope in delaying a decision to follow Christ. The message is clear: “now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2).

Those in heaven pray that the wicked who have rejected God and killed His followers will get what they deserve – judgment. The prayer is not for personal revenge; rather, it comes out of a concern for God’s honor and the suffering of His people. Along with that, those who paid this high price for their faith also eagerly look forward to the fulfillment of prophecy (2 Thessalonians 1:4-10), when Christ will ultimately be glorified, and they will share in His final victory.

And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:

SLAIN BECAUSE OF THE WORD OF GOD / REVELATION 6:9

When the fifth seal is opened, John’s attention is drawn away from visions of what is going to happen on earth, and he again sees what is happening in heaven. Those “slain because of the word of God” are those who are killed for their faith in Christ and their stand for the truth of His Word. 

  1. They are told to have patience, for many more will yet die for their faith (Revelation 7:13-14; 13:15; 18:24; 20:4).
  2. The period of tribulation will be a terrible time of persecution for those who accept Christ during that period and remain faithful to God and His Word (Revelation 3:10; Revelation 7:9; 14:16). It is not directly stated who the martyrs are, though it seems certain that many are those who took a stand for Christ and were killed during the first part of the tribulation. Perhaps this group includes all those of past ages who were killed for their faith in Christ. Either way, they are alive with God in heaven.

WORTHY IS THE LAMB / REVELATION 5:12

Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

WORTHY IS THE LAMB / REVELATION 5:12

The Greek word axios means “worthy, valuable, right.” The title, “The Lamb,” is used for Jesus 28 times in Revelation and is the main image used for Him in the book (Revelation 5:6). Jesus is the worthy Lamb because His sacrificial death on the cross “takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). His marks bear witness to that sacrifice and signify His worthiness to be praised for His power, wealth and wisdom. Up to this time, the worship in John’s heavenly vision has been directed to the One on the throne (God, the Father). When the Lamb takes the scroll, all of heaven sends up a great outburst of praise, honor and glory directed also to Christ (the only difference is that they praise in “a new song,” (Revelation 5:9-12). Jesus alone is worthy to take the scroll of earth’s destiny from the hand of Him who sits on the throne (God, His Father) and to break its seals and reveal its contents (Revelation 5:6-8). His worthiness comes not from His eternal deity (the fact that He is God) as the Son of God, but from His great work of redemption (salvation, rescue, restoration) as the Son of Man. Jesus will be loved and worshiped for all eternity and the Lamb of God who humbly sacrificed His life for us (Philippians 2:6-11).

And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.

THE PRAYERS OF SAINTS / REVELATION 5:8

This refers to the desperate and sincere prayers of God’s faithful people for the coming of His kingdom when they will reign with Him (Revelation 5:9-10). Their prayer is, “Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10; Revelation 6:6; 2 Peter 3:12; Psalms 141:2). The bowls of incense indicate that the book must be opened and that its judgments of the great tribulation must take place before the prayers can be fully answered.

A LAMB AS IF IT HAD BEEN SLAIN / REVELATION 5:6

(KJV) Revelation 5:6

Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

A LAMB AS IF IT HAD BEEN SLAIN / REVELATION 5:6

When John looks, he sees not a lion but a “Lamb” that bears the marks of having been killed as a sacrifice. This is the picture of Christ’s giving of Himself on the cross for the sins of the human race (Isaiah 53:7; John 1:29) and means that Christ’s ultimate victory comes from His sacrificial death (Revelation 5:9-14). The “Lamb” is Revelation’s primary symbol of Christ (Revelation 5:6-7; 12:11; 15:3; 17:14; 21:22; 22:1, 3; 5:12). “The wrath of the Lamb” (Revelation 6:16) will come upon those who do not accept Him as Savior, rejecting His sacrifice as the Lamb of God (Revelation 6:16-17). The “seven horns” represent the power and strength of a ruler (1 Kings 22:11; Daniel 7:24; for “seven spirits,” Revelation 4:5).
