I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears.

I AM WORN OUT FROM GROANING / PSALMS 6:6

The psalmist’s lingering distress and grief have literally exhausted him. The statement “How long, O Lord, how long?” (Psalms 6:3), along with Psalms 6:6-7, confirms that God has not been quick to restore his spiritual peace. The great hope in this psalm comes in Psalms 6:8-9 that teaches that we do not need to despair; God will respond to our cries for help in His own perfect time. Our part is to wait patiently and to keep trusting Him (Psalms 13:1; 74:9).

DELIVER ME / PSALMS 6:4

Return, O Lord, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies’ sake.

DELIVER ME / PSALMS 6:4

In true humility, the psalm writer seeks healing for his body (Psalms 6:2), but most of all for his soul. He wants to be restored spiritually so he can once again experience God’s presence and favor. He desperately desires to sense God’s nearness, mercy and love Psalms 6:2; Psalms 6:4). Since mercy and love are a part of God’s character, believers may appeal to Him to be true to His character – as he will always be.

HEAL ME / PSALMS 6:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 6:2

Have mercy upon me, O Lord; for I am weak: O Lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed.

HEAL ME / PSALMS 6:2

During a time of distress and godly discipline – which the psalm writer knows he deserves – the experience has even affected him physically. But more troubling is the sense that he has lost God’s presence (Psalms 6:4) and spiritual peace (Psalms 6:3). It is likely that he has suffered for a long time and is experiencing intense grief. The psalmist is not really asking God to stop the discipline, what he wants most is for God to show him mercy so that he can continue in a life of service and faithfulness (Jeremiah 10:23-24).

(KJV) Psalms 6:1-10

O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. 2 Have mercy upon me, O Lord; for I am weak: O Lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed. 3 My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O Lord, how long? 4 Return, O Lord, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies’ sake. 5 For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks? 6 I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears. 7 Mine eye is consumed because of grief; it waxeth old because of all mine enemies. 8 Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity; for the Lord hath heard the voice of my weeping. 9 The Lord hath heard my supplication; the Lord will receive my prayer. 10 Let all mine enemies be ashamed and sore vexed: let them return and be ashamed suddenly.

This psalm is one of six penitential psalms (psalms of sorrow and sincere regret for sin; the others are Psalms 32; 38; 51; 51; 130; 146). Here the Holy Spirit encourages anyone who has suffered for a long time under God’s discipline and who needs forgiveness, healing or restoration.

The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity. 6 Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the Lord will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.

YOU HATE ALL WHO DO WRONG / PSALMS 5:5-6

God hates the fact that people sin – defying Him, rejecting His Word and going their own stubborn ways. He will openly oppose those who are responsible for doing, influencing and encouraging evil. But equally, the Bible reveals God, the Creator of all, as One who loves sinners, reaches out to them in compassion and mercy and offers to save them from the results of sin. The greatest expression of God’s love was shown through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ, who died to pay the price for our sins and provide the opportunity for forgiveness and a personal relationship with God (John 3:16).

YOU HEAR MY VOICE / PSALMS 5:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 5:3  

My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.

YOU HEAR MY VOICE / PSALMS 5:3

Because of his strong determination to pursue a deeper relationship with God, David commits himself to continual prayer (Psalms 5:1-2; Deuteronomy 4:29). The fact that he prays “in the morning” suggests that his life is centered around God and that he begins the day by expressing his dependence on Him. Each morning is a time to renew our dedication to God (Psalms 55:16-17; 88:13; 119:147) by taking time to talk and listen to Him and by feeding spiritually on His Word (Psalms 119:9-16). This type of relationship helps us “wait in expectation” for answers to our prayers. Even throughout the day, we should look for signs that God is at work in our lives.

But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the Lord will hear when I call unto him.

In order to have assurance that God will answer our call for help, we must be earnest in all our efforts to live a God-pleasing life (Proverbs 15:29; John 9:31; 15:7). Those have been set apart as His own treasured possession; they have constant access to Him as their protector and provider (Hebrews 10:22: 1 John 3:21-22; 1 John 3:22).

Selah.  5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the Lord. 6 There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. 7 Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased. 8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.

ANSWER ME / PSALMS 4:1-8

This psalm reveals who can hope to hear from God in times of distress. It is only those who have a personal relationship with God that includes trust in Him (Psalms 4:5, 8), a sincere desire for His help (Psalms 4:1, 3, 6) and a lifestyle that is pleasing to Him (Psalms 4:3-5). Of course, even those who do not yet have a relationship with God can call out to Him if they are ready to humble themselves and give Him control of their lives.

Believers who call on God and constantly trust Him to take care of their situations (Psalms 3:4) find inner peace, rest and security (Psalms 4:8). God will watch over, take care of and refresh them even while they sleep (Psalms 127:2; Proverbs 3:24).

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 3:3 But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

YOU ARE A SHIELD … YOU BESTOW GLORY / PSALMS 3:3

Believers who follow God’s purposes will experience hardship and opposition (Psalms 3:1-2; Psalm 3:2; 2 Samuel 15:12-30). But they can call on God with a confidence that He will take action on their behalf while fulfilling His perfect purposes.

  1. “Shield” refers to God’s protection (Genesis 15:1, where God is Abraham’s shield; Deuteronomy 33:29, where He is Israel’s shield). 
  2. God bestows “glory” (honor, help and encouragement) to people who take refuge in His presence. Committing ourselves to God’s care and protection gives us power and confidence to rise above life’s troubles.
