DO YOU STAND FAR OFF? / PSALMS 10:1-18

(KJV) Psalms 10:1-18

Why standest thou afar off, O Lord? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble? 2 The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined. 3 For the wicked boasteth of his heart’s desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the Lord abhorreth. 4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts. 5 His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them. 6 He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity. 7 His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity. 8 He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor. 9 He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net. 10 He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones. 11 He hath said in his heart, God hath forgotten: he hideth his face; he will never see it. 12 Arise, O Lord; O God, lift up thine hand: forget not the humble. 13 Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? he hath said in his heart, Thou wilt not require it. 14 Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless. 15 Break thou the arm of the wicked and the evil man: seek out his wickedness till thou find none. 16 The Lord is King for ever and ever: the heathen are perished out of his land. 17 Lord, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear: 18 To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress.

DO YOU STAND FAR OFF? / PSALMS 10:1-18

This prayer is a cry to understand why God delays His justice (the cry of those killed for their faith in Christ in Revelation 6:9; Revelation 6:10) and allows wicked people to succeed. Our present age seems to be filled with injustice and all sorts of evil, and God often seems to “stand far off,” letting the ungodly go their own way without being punished. While God’s people should continue to pray that He will stop evil and suffering, they can rest assured that a day of justice and judgment is coming. Until then, the Lord will lift up those who trust Him (Psalms 10:17-18).

(KJV) Psalms 9:18

For the needy shall not always be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever.

THE NEEDY WILL NOT ALWAYS BE FORGOTTEN / PSALMS 9:18

God takes special care of those who are poor, disadvantaged and troubled among His people (Psalms 9:9-10, 12). God promises not to abandon them (Psalms 9:10), but to hear their prayers (Psalms 9:12) and fulfill their hopes in His perfect timing (Psalms 9:18). We also have a part in meeting others’ needs.

(KJV) Psalms 9:8

And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.

JUDGE THE WORLD IN RIGHTEOUSNESS / PSALMS 9:8

David thanks and praises the Lord because He will one day fully rescue those who depend on Him (Psalms 9:8-14). In fact, God will bring judgement against His enemies (Psalms 9:3-8, 15-20). 

  1. While it might be easy to get discouraged by what seems like the success of evil in the world, God’s people must remember, based on His Word, that the Lord will make everything right in the end. God will honor us if we remain faithful to Him even though other people and circumstances try to weaken or destroy our faith in God (Psalms 9:7-1; Revelation 19 -21).
  2. Believers today can apply these verses to the enemies of Christ and His church. As the conflict rages between the forces of evil and the forces of righteousness, every Christian will face opposition from Satan, the world and even false believers within the church (2 Thessalonians 3:12).

WITH GLORY AND HONOR / PSALMS 8:5

(KJV) Psalms 8:5

For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

WITH GLORY AND HONOR / PSALMS 8:5

This psalm expressed the amazing honor that God has given to humankind. God created us for a wonderful purpose. We are not just animals nor the product of natural evolution and chance (Psalms 8:5). Rather, we are created in His image to reflect His character and fulfill His purposes. We are so valuable to God that we are the special object of His love and favor (Psalms 8:4). He has chosen us to rule over His creation (Psalms 8:6-8; Genesis 1:28; Genesis 2:15; Genesis 2:19). The fact that we hold such a favored position with God is no reason for selfish pride, but it is a reason for taking personal responsibility for the trust God has given to us. Above all, it is a reason to give thanks and honor to the Creator (Psalms 8:9).

THE SON OF MAN / PSALMS 8:3-6

In the New Testament these verses, taken from the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Hebrew Old Testament), are applied to Jesus (Hebrews 2:6-8; Ephesians 1:19-22). It is only in Him that these truths are perfectly realized. He is the One who, as a representative of the human race, has full power and authority over all creation (Psalms 8:6-8; Philippians 2:10).

WHO SAVES THE UPRIGHT IN HEART / PSALMS 7:10

(KJV) Psalms 7:10

My defence is of God, which saveth the upright in heart.

WHO SAVES THE UPRIGHT IN HEART / PSALMS 7:10

The Word of God teaches that those who serve and trust God can expect Him to help and rescue them in times of trouble. Keeping a clear conscience and making a sincere effort to keep our hearts right with God will give us confidence that He will respond to us in difficult times.

  1. When praying, we may emphasize our spiritual integrity (character, devotion, truthfulness, honor, reliability) like the psalm writer did when he said, “Judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness” (Psalms 7:8; Job 24:14). Such a claim is not self-righteous or arrogant if it is spoken from a sincere heart. Such a heart loves and trusts God and lives by the principles of God’s Word (1 John 3:21; James 5:16).
  2. It is a great benefit to pray for God’s help with a humble, submissive heart that openly confesses and rejects the pull of sin (Psalms 6). The believer can stand before a holy God with trust when there is no wrong that separates him or her from God or man.
  3. Note what Paul states: “So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man” (Acts 24:16; 2 Corinthians 1:12; 1 Timothy 1:5, 19; 2 Timothy 1:3; 1 Peter 3:21). And Jesus affirms that when our minds are focused properly on Him, we will experience answers to prayer: “If you remain in me and My Words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you” (John 15:7). Keep in mind that our answers may not always come in the time and way we expect.

DELIVER ME FROM ALL WHO PURSUE ME / PSALMS 7:1-17

(KJV) Psalms 7:1-17

 O Lord my God, in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me: 2 Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver. 3 O Lord my God, If I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands; 4 If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have delivered him that without cause is mine enemy:) 5 Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay mine honour in the dust. Selah. 6 Arise, O Lord, in thine anger, lift up thyself because of the rage of mine enemies: and awake for me to the judgment that thou hast commanded. 7 So shall the congregation of the people compass thee about: for their sakes therefore return thou on high. 8 The Lord shall judge the people: judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me. 9 Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins. 10 My defence is of God, which saveth the upright in heart. 11 God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day. 12 If he turn not, he will whet his sword; he hath bent his bow, and made it ready. 13 He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death; he ordaineth his arrows against the persecutors.14 Behold, he travaileth with iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. 15 He made a pit, and digged it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made. 16 His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own pate. 17 I will praise the Lord according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the Lord most high.

DELIVER ME FROM ALL WHO PURSUE ME / PSALMS 7:1-17

This psalm serves as a model for all who are unfairly treated, falsely accused or attacked by those who hate them. The prayer can refer to other people or to our greatest enemy – Satan and his demonic forces (Ephesians 6:11-12; 1 Peter 5:8). Satan’s constant desire is to tear us apart like a lion (Psalms 7:2). Therefore, it is always right to pray for rescue from the evil one (Matthew 6:13).
