In order to have assurance that God will answer our call for help, we must be earnest in all our efforts to live a God-pleasing life (Proverbs 15:29; John 9:31; 15:7). Those have been set apart as His own treasured possession; they have constant access to Him as their protector and provider (Hebrews 10:22: 1 John 3:21-22; 1 John 3:22).

ANSWER ME / PSALMS 4:1-8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 4:1-8

Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer. 2 O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah. 3 But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the Lord will hear when I call unto him. 4 Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.  5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the Lord. 6 There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. 7 Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased. 8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.

ANSWER ME / PSALMS 4:1-8

This psalm reveals who can hope to hear from God in times of distress. It is only those who have a personal relationship with God that includes trust in Him (Psalms 4:5, 8), a sincere desire for His help (Psalms 4:1, 3, 6) and a lifestyle that is pleasing to Him (Psalms 4:3-5). Of course, even those who do not yet have a relationship with God can call out to Him if they are ready to humble themselves and give Him control of their lives.

YOU ARE A SHIELD … YOU BESTOW GLORY / PSALMS 3:3

Believers who follow God’s purposes will experience hardship and opposition (Psalms 3:1-2; Psalm 3:2; 2 Samuel 15:12-30). But they can call on God with a confidence that He will take action on their behalf while fulfilling His perfect purposes.

  1. “Shield” refers to God’s protection (Genesis 15:1, where God is Abraham’s shield; Deuteronomy 33:29, where He is Israel’s shield). 
  2. God bestows “glory” (honor, help and encouragement) to people who take refuge in His presence. Committing ourselves to God’s care and protection gives us power and confidence to rise above life’s troubles.

This term occurs 71 times in the book of Psalms and 3 times in Habakkuk (Habakkuk 3:3, 9, 13). The meaning of this term is uncertain, but most often it was used in psalms that had some sort of melody in their titles. It is likely a musical or ceremonial term signaling a pause, musical interlude or musical climax.

Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me. 2 Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah. 3 But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. 4 I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah. 5 I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me. 6 I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about. 7 Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. 8 Salvation belongeth unto the Lord: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.

HOW MANY ARE MY FOES! / PSALMS 3:1-8

This psalm is a lament – an expression of grief, regret or trouble – offered to God. Nearly a third of the psalms fit into this category.

  1. The basic structure of this type of psalm includes an intense, passionate call to God (Psalms 3:1), a description of trouble, suffering or injustice (Psalms 3:1-2), an expression of trust in God (Psalms 3:3-6), a plea for help (Psalms 3:7) and an expression of praise or thanksgiving (Psalms 3:8). 
  2. The large number of laments in the Bible is a sign that God wants people to cry out to Him for help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16).

WHY DO THE NATIONS CONSPIRE / PSALMS 2:1-12

(KJV) Psalms 2:1-12

Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, 3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. 4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. 5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. 6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. 7 I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. 8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. 9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. 10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

WHY DO THE NATIONS CONSPIRE / PSALMS 2:1-12

This psalm shows us four snapshots, or small pictures, that are constantly found among humankind.

  1. The psalm writer begins by speaking of people groups and world leaders taking a stand against God’s “Anointed One” (Psalms 2:1-3; Psalms 2:2; Acts 4:25-27). This is a sad picture of humankind’s prideful rebellion against God, His law, His plan to save them, His Messiah (the “Anointed One,” Savior; Psalms 2:2) and the moral teaching of His Word. The New Testament authors recognize that same attitude of the world as it opposes Christ and His followers (John 15:19; Ephesians 6:12).
  2. God responds to the world’s useless efforts to defy Him (Psalms 2:4-6). He mocks the world’s efforts because the time is coming when He will put an end to human rebellion and will fully establish His kingdom on the earth at the end of time as we know it (Romans 1:18; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11; 2 Thessalonians 2:8; Revelations 19:11-21).
  3. God the Father promises to send His Son (Psalms 2:7-9; Psalms 2:7) to rightfully rule the nations (Acts 13:33; Hebrews 1:5; 5:5; Matthew 3:17; Matthew 17:5; 2 Peter 1:17) and to defeat all who oppose Him. This promise will be fulfilled when Christ returns to earth and destroys God’s enemies (Revelations 12:5; 19:15). Then all His faithful followers will participate in His reign over the nations (Revelation 2:26-27; 20:1-6; Revelation 20:2; Revelation 20:3; Revelation 20:4; Revelation 20:6).
  4. Through the psalm writer, the Holy Spirit sends out a challenge to humankind to be wise with respect to Almighty God and to take refuge in a relationship with Him before the terrible day of God’s judgment (Psalms 2:10-12; Hebrews 3:7-19).

For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.

God has compassion on us because He knows our weaknesses and frailties. Even His most faithful followers are in need of His compassion. As a good father has deep compassion for His children when they fail, suffer or are mistreated, so also the heavenly Father hurts when His children are hurting. During times of trouble, failure or struggle, we must not think that God is distant or uncaring. Instead, we must remember that He looks on us with compassion, and He will help us with whatever we need (Luke 7:12-13).

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 103:13

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.

COMPASSION ON THOSE WHO FEAR HIM / PSALMS 103:13

God shows mercy to those who truly honor and respect Him for His power, judgment and intolerance of evil. The “fear of God” is a liberating fear that motivates us to avoid evil, to obey God’s Word and to live with a constant awareness of God’s mercy with a constant awareness of God’s mercy and nearness. According to this passage of Scripture, the blessings God gives to those who fear Him are:

  1. His mercy, love and forgiveness (Psalms 103:11-12, 17; Isaiah 1:18; Isaiah 38:17; Jeremiah 31:14).
  2. His fatherly compassion (Psalms 103:13-14).
  3. His faithfulness and goodness to their families and descendants (Psalms 103:17).

FORGIVES … HEALS / PSALMS 103:3-16

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 103:3-16

Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s. The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed. He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel. He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel. He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.  Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.

FORGIVES … HEALS / PSALMS 103:3-16

Since the first humans rebelled against God’s instructions, the curse of sin, sickness and death has been upon the entire human race. But God has provided the means for victory over the consequences of this curse. This psalm lists God’s benefits for His people” forgiveness of sins, healing for diseases and the gifts of spiritual freedom and eternal life. Forgiveness is the first and most important gift we can receive from God because it restores our relationship with Him and rescues us from spiritual destruction (Psalms 103:4). Physical healing is also part of God’s complete salvation – a benefit available to those who have received forgiveness and a personal relationship with God (James 5:15-16).
