FISHERS OF MEN / MATTHEW 4:19

Speaking in terms that related to the occupation of Peter and Andrew (fishermen), Jesus calls them to a higher mission than they have ever known – to influence others for God and introduce them to Christ. One may be a pastor, evangelist, missionary, writer, computer programmer, nurse, factory worker, waiter, teacher or student; but if they are not striving in some way to introduce others to Christ, they are not doing the most important work to which God has called them (Matthew 28:19; Luke 5:10; John 15:16; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 9:19).

IT IS WRITTEN / MATTHEW 4:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 4:6-7

And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

IT IS WRITTEN / MATTHEW 4:6

  1. The Greek verb gegraptai (meaning “it is written”) is in the perfect tense. This tense reflects that God’s command is both a completed action and a continuing state that results from that action. The full force of the statement in Greek is: “It has been written and it still stands written.” This points to the ongoing authority and unchanging nature of God’s Word.
  2. Jesus used God’s Word as an effective weapon against temptation; Satan tried to misuse God’s Word in order to tempt Jesus to sin. At times, people who oppose God will also misuse the Bible in an attempt to persuade believers to do something they know is wrong or unwise. Some Bible passages, when taken out of context or not compared with other parts of God’s Word, may even seem to allow or support sinful behavior (1 Corinthians 6:12). Followers of Christ must know God’s Word thoroughly and beware of those who try to misuse Scripture in order to support their own opinions or satisfy their own selfish desires. The apostle Peter (one of Jesus’ closest disciples and a leader in the early church) speaks of those who twist the Scriptures to their own destruction (2 Peter 3:16).

FASTING FORTY DAYS / MATTHEW 4:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 4:2

And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

FASTING FORTY DAYS / MATTHEW 4:2

After fasting (going without food in order to give greater attention to spiritual matters) “forty days and forty nights,” Jesus “was hungry.” Satan’s first temptation took advantage of His physical hunger for food. (This passage suggests that although Jesus did not eat food during His fast, He did drink water, Luke 4:2). Since hunger is one of the basic and strongest human drives, this was certainly a difficult test for Jesus. However, in order to relate to our human struggles (Hebrews 2:17; 4:15) and overcome temptation in the same way we must, Jesus had to rely on the same power that is available to any Spirit-filled Christian (Exodus 34:28; 1Kings 19:8; Matthew 6:14 see on fasting). During the forty-day fast, it is reasonable to assume that Jesus, through prayer and meditation on God’s Word, was strengthening and preparing Himself for the work His Father had sent Him to do.

JESUS … TEMPTED / MATTHEW 4:1-11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 4:1-11

Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

JESUS … TEMPTED / MATTHEW 4:1-11

Satan tempted Jesus in an attempt to draw Him away from the path of perfect obedience to God’s will (His plans, desires, purposes, ways). All of Satan’s efforts appealed to the human desire to satisfy or lift up self. Notice that in each temptation, Jesus relied on and submitted Himself to the authority of God’s written Word rather than yielding to the suggestion of Satan (Matthew 4:4, 7; Matthew 4:10). Since all believers are tempted in the same way, there is much we can learn from the temptation of Christ:

  1. Satan is our greatest enemy. We must constantly be aware that we are engaged in spiritual warfare with unseen but very real powers of evil (Ephesians 6:12). These powers want to change the course of God’s plans, destroy lives and make sure that people remain in spiritual darkness and are condemned for eternity (John 10:10; 1 Peter 5:8).
  2. Without the Holy Spirit and the proper use of God’s Word, we cannot consistently overcome sin and temptation. However, there are things we can do to help us learn how to use God’s Word in overcoming temptation:
  1. Realize that through the Word you have the power to resist any appeal Satan can make (John 15:3,7).
  2. Get the Word of God into your heart and make it active in your life by constantly meditating on it (reading and pondering over and over what it means and how it can apply to specific situations in your life, Deuteronomy 6:6, Psalms 1:2; Psalms 119:47-48)
  3. Fill your mind with God’s Word by memorizing as much of it as possible (James 1:21).
  4. Quote memorized passages to yourself and to God the instant you are tempted (Matthew 4:4, 7; Matthew 4:10).
  5. Recognize and respond to the Holy Spirit as He inspires you to obey God’s Word (Romans 8:12-14; Romans 8:14; Galatians 5:18).
  6. Pray for God’s help and understanding (Ephesians 6:18).

Some key passages to memorize in facing temptation include:

  1. general encouragement on overcoming sin and living in the power of God’s Spirit (Romans 6 and 8);
  2. specific passages concerning immoral behavior and lifestyles (Romans 13:14),
  3.  lying (John 8:44; Colossians 3:9),
  4.  gossiping (James 4:11),
  5. Disobeying parents (Hebrews 13:17),
  6. Discouragement (Galatians 6:9),
  7. Fear of the future (2 Timothy 1:7),
  8. Lust (Matthew 5:28; 2 Timothy 2:22),
  9. Desire for revenge (Matthew 6:15),
  10. Neglect of God’s Word (Matthew 4:4),
  11. Worry over finances (Matthew 6:24-34; Matthew 6:24; Philippians 4:6).

THE TRINITY IN EXAMPLE / MATTHEW 3:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 3:17

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

THE TRINITY IN EXAMPLE / MATTHEW 3:17

Jesus’ baptism is an extraordinary revelation in that it gives a unique picture of the Trinity, the fact that the one true God exists in three distinct, interrelated, unified persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; 1 Peter 1:2).

  1. Jesus Christ, who is Himself God and equal with God the Father (John 1:1; John 10:30), is baptized in the Jordan.
  2. The Holy Spirit, who is also God and equal with the Father (Acts 5:3-4), comes upon Jesus like a dove.

God the Father declares that He is well pleased with His Son, Jesus. This situation reveals three distinct yet fully divine (fully God) and equal persons, each possessing all three exist in such unity that they are not three Gods, but one (Mark 1:11; Matthew 28:19; John 15:26; 1 Corinthians 12:4-13; Ephesians 2:18; 1 Peter 1:2).

SPIRIT … ON HIM / MATTHEW 3:16

(KJV) Matthew 3:16

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

SPIRIT … ON HIM / MATTHEW 3:16

Everything Jesus did – His preaching, His healings, His suffering, His victory over sin and Satan’s power – He did by the power of the Holy Spirit. Even though He was fully God, He willingly laid aside and limited His rights and privileges as God. In becoming fully human, He had to operate the same way we must – as people dependent on God’s Holy Spirit. If Jesus could do nothing apart from the power of the Holy Spirit’s power (Luke 4:1-2; Luke 1:14; Luke 1:18-19; John 3:34; Acts 1:1-2; Acts 10:38). The Spirit equipped and worked powerfully through Jesus to accomplish God’s plan of restoring His relationship with all people (Luke 3:21-22). Jesus Himself would later baptize His followers with the Holy Spirit so that they too might have the Spirit’s power to accomplish His purposes for them (Matthew 3:11; Acts 1:5; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:4).

JESUS … BAPTIZED / MATTHEW 3:13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 3:13

Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

JESUS … BAPTIZED / MATTHEW 3:13

Jesus was baptized by John for the following reasons:

  1. “To fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15; Leviticus 16:4; Galatians 4:4-5). Christ, through water baptism, made a public statement that He was prepared to fulfill all of God’s requirements.
  2. To identify Himself with sinners – although Jesus Himself never sinned and did not need to repent or make a change in His life (2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 2:24).

To associate Himself with the new movement of God that was calling everyone to repent – to turn from their own ways, accept Christ and follow God – if they wanted to be part of God’s spiritual kingdom. (John 1:23, 32-33; John 1:33).

WILL BAPTIZE YOU WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / MATTHEW 3:11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 3:11

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

WILL BAPTIZE YOU WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / MATTHEW 3:11

John teaches that the work of the Messiah will involve baptizing His followers with the Holy Spirit and fire. This baptism would provide great spiritual power and enthusiasm to live for Christ and spread His message (Luke 3:16). Many scholars view the reference to “fire” as referring to the spiritually purifying presence of God and the refining work of God’s Spirit. The context of this passage, however, could mean that “fire” refers to judgment (Matthew 3:12; Luke 3:17); “unquenchable fire” is the same as the “lake of fire” in Revelation 20:10; Revelation 20:14; Revelation 20:15. Like the Old Testament prophets, John did not see or describe the time gap between the first and second coming of Christ. Jesus came first as the Messiah, to save people spiritually and baptize them in the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11; Acts 1:5). He will come again as the judge who separates the wheat from the chaff, the godly from the ungodly (Matthew 3:12; Revelation 20:15).

FRUIT IN KEEPING WITH REPENTANCE / MATTHEW 3:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 3:8

Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

FRUIT IN KEEPING WITH REPENTANCE / MATTHEW 3:8

In spiritual terms, to “produce fruit” means to show outward evidence (what can be seen) of true inward faith (what God is doing inside) through visible growth in character, compassion and godly behavior. Genuine repentance will always lead to an active faith and godly behavior (Matthew 3:2; Matthew 23:23; Luke 3:10-14; Acts 26:20; John 15:16). Those who say they believe in Christ and are God’s children and yet do not live in a way that produces and shows good fruit, are like trees that, in the end, will be cut down and thrown into the fire (Matthew 3: 8-10, 12).

PHARISEES AND SADDUCEES / MATTHEW 3:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 3:7

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

PHARISEES AND SADDUCEES / MATTHEW 3:7

The Pharisees and Sadducees were two of the most important religious groups in Judaism (the faith and religious culture of the Jews, based primarily on Old Testament laws, customs and standards).

  1. The Pharisees were a Jewish religious group that was faithful to the teachings and practices of the entire Old Testament, which they accepted according to their own human interpretations. Their personal interpretation often changed or overlooked the real purpose and principles behind God’s laws. They especially focused on the teaching that salvation came by strict obedience to every standard of God’s law (and, of course, their interpretations of that law). They taught that the coming Messiah would be an earthly ruler who would help Israel overcome and rule over the nations, forcing all people to obey God’s law. However, their religion was only an outward display; there was no true inward godliness of heart (Matthew 23:25). They refused to acknowledge the corruption of their own human nature (which greatly affected their interpretation of God’s law and view of salvation). The Pharisees opposed Jesus and His message that true religion is a matter of the heart and spirit and not simply a matter of obeying laws and rules – even the commands of Scripture (Matthew 9:14; 23:2-4; Luke 18:9-4). God does require obedience, but it must be a heartfelt response that rises up out of true love for Him (Romans 1:5; 6:16; 2 Corinthians 9:13; 2 John 1:6).
  2. The Sadducees were more of a political group who were non-traditional in their religious views. They did not accept the reality of the supernatural. While appearing to follow God’s law, they really denied many of its teachings. For example, they rejected the doctrines (teachings) of the resurrection, angels and eternal spirits (Acts 23:8), as well as miracles and the judgment to come. Living godly lives was not very important to them. They also persecuted Jesus and His followers (Matthew 16:1-4).
